did anyone else get this email today? some site is planning on having skins availible for 10 cents a piece, and that moeny would goto the skinner. seemed kinda wierd to me considering winamp is free, so why pay for skins, especially when there are already sites that have em for free?, but i thought id just see what anyone else thought

You'd certainly get more devoted skinners that way. But what about people who have to download skins more than once because they have a problem the first time, or they have to reinstall? And 180,000 people getting PayPal accounts or whatever wouldn't really be easy.

i actually think that skinning is helped by the fact that its free ..
it not only makes ppl more willing to help i think but also to post ideas and get the much needed feed back to make skins like mercury so amazing

$ 37.200,00
nice, but (if i actually had that) i bet that money that there are very few people who wanna pay for a download.

that would be pretty awsome though, i mean its an awsome idea and would inspire many skinners. and i mean whats 10 cents for a person... 50 cents for 5 skins, that would be awsome if it would work acualy.

I think the micropayment for skins isn't a half bad idea, but most people aren't use to having to pay for their skins. so they might accept it, or they might reject it.
the problem with the entire thing is that then the user has the right to bitch about your skin. if it doesn't work, they can, and will bitch to you. HEY YOU STOLE MY DIME!

Just hearin about that makes me appreciate all the sweet ass skins
out there that are free! There are many id spend a dime for. I think
people would pay because there would be some sweet ass skins made to
try to compete for sales.
Skin design would excelerate!
Worth a try anyway!

I got that message too, but I don't like the idea. I'm just so used to skins bieng free, it just seems wrong. Plus, I'd assume that if you realease you skin on thier site, you can't release it anywhere else, which limits your visibility considering this site will probably not be that popular since people can get wicked looking skins free other places.
I give it a big

hmm, I'd rather winamp.com let you charge a maximum of 1$ for a skin but you dont have to charge.
I doubt I would ever charge

the only practical way to make money for skinning is to do the whole "official_***_skin.wal" kinda thing.

hm.. i think, it's an interesting idea, as much more people would really spent more effort on making good skins, and not putting up such crappy things as there are some at the moment. but it wouldn't work.... one would download and share, everybody would be happy.

Well, the system as it is has produced some AMAZING skinners and coders (robouk, rpeterclark, adil, willfisher, naamlos etc. come to mind) and some equally beautiful skins.
So, as far as I'm concerned, if it ain't broke dont fix it...

I'd be happy if people gave me a penny I could use 3000 bucks. $30000 now that would be something. I think the dl would be cut to nothing though. Perhaps at .01 I'd have 1000 dls. I'd rather have it out there than 10 bucks.

You also got to realize that these payment systems, like paypal, charge a fee to transfer money, and I am sure it is more then 10 cents.

A better idea should be donate the creator idea...
cakemikz
8th October 2002, 05:45
the problem with that is i wouldnt donate not because i dont want to pay but because i am soo lazy..i mean that takes some time..
iPlayTheSpoons

well the donate thing wouldnt be usual or expected type of thing. kinda like getting a tip for selling shoes (i sell shoes...). but if someone was really impressed with your work or something, im sure someone like rpeterclark could draw a few bucks if the system were set up well

Yeah I got that email...
Winamp is free but the people who're making it are getting paid.
some skinners put a lot of effort in their skins and get nothing for it.
the problem is that if good skinners start selling skins, winamp.com will be full only of porn stars, britney spears and comercial skins...
I don't think enough people would bother getting a paypal account only to pay 10 cents...
+ no one would ever post his skin in the forum anymore.
Another solution is will's theory, which works great so far :p
