Should mods issue a warning before banning members?

Is it fair to ban members who have been here a long time without a warning under the assumption that they "know the rules"? While newbies get a warning or two...

Should everyone be treated equally? Is this fair or not?

I take it we are referring to rm' and Boplicity here. Both parties were banned for a week for posting a list of links to pornographic sites. The rules regarding pornography are widely known, and if anything, both bop and rm' are long time members who should know the rules, and are less deserving of a warning than a newbie would be. Other members have been banned for the same length of time for posting the same type of material, and the rules apply to all. If we slapped them on the wrist and said not to do it again, we would be accused of being unfair, that friends of the moderators fell under a different set of rules than the rest of you.

Because not all moderators are online at the same time. And in order to be fair, if an offensive post is spotted, it is moved backstage for the entire mod squad to see when they get the chance.

Now I'm not going to sit here and argue the rights and wrongs of the situation all day with you. They are both people that I respect on these forums, but that is irrelevant - the rules are there for a reason. The action taken depends on the mod dealing with the issue.
It's always been my practice to just edit the post or delete it and get on with my life. Even for a newbie. If they repeat then take further action.

Those porn links were up for over a day. The mods are lazy and useless. don't deny it. I'll tell you, they spend less time modding the threads and more time discussing who they will warn and ban next :rolleyes:

As ethan says, the rules are clear - porn isn't allowed to be posted.

OK, so the thread was about "what would it take to get banned" and Bop showed us exactly. Yes, Bop and rm' were made an example of, in my opinion, but they are both memebers with very high post counts and as such should set an example to the newbies and other members in the forum.

If I, or any other long-standing member oversteps the line in such a way I would expect a more severe punishment than a newbie who isn't as aware of what is acceptable here.

Also, at the end of the day, they're banned for a week - it's not exactly the end of the world.


Another interesting point to do with ethan's comments about Adil... I (or any other member) could have alerted a mod to the post with the links in. I probably am therefore guilty too, as I've seen the posts by Bop and rm' and, because I like and respect them as valued members of the forums have taken a concious decision not to inform a moderator. Would more members have alerted a moderator if the post had been made by Adil, or some other annoying newbie?

Okay then, it looks like I am going to sit here all day and argue the rights and wrongs of the situation. I was the mod that pressed the ban button on boplicity, and asked sawg to do the same on rm' (mods can't ban ex-mods). From what I see backstage, I had the backing of the other mods that took the time to reply to the thread addressing the situation. Matt, no doubt you already know that seeing as you have backstage access, but the others probably don't. So I guess that classifies me as "the mod dealing with the issue". Personally I don't think it's right to post such material in a place thats open to people of all ages, and yes I think the right decision was made in this case. Both rm' and Bop know the score, and the consequences that result. They were banned for a week, a slap on the wrist all things considered.

But basically what you are saying is that I'm wrong, porn is acceptable, yet stupidity is not. After all, you were pretty intent on getting Adil banned in this thread (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=107687&perpage=40&pagenumber=2) simply for stating an opinion...

Adil is a known fool. Proven himself to be an idiot. No reason is needed to flame him.

If there were favouritism in this case, wouldn't it make more sense not to ban them - after all, they are well-loved members. rm' is one of the few people here who has the ability to make me second-guess my own views on a situation through the content of his posts, and I wish that he weren't banned. You are right porn is not accepted here. My complaint here is the eagerness to ban or warn. Ever since i started visiting and was a mod myself it was procedure to remove the link and maybe the post. Maybe give them a warning. Then take real action if they repeat. But now things are getting too strict, and notice most of this strictness is not coming from the older mods...

This user group has no permissions to edit or delete posts. I tried. I did inform Nemessis of the post. He then took action.

Things have changed. I lost my job. So as it happens i have a bit more time to hang around here. Also the other reason for quitting was problems with other moderators. Any way does it matter?, this thread, post, issue isn't about me..

Yea...I like spending time at the forums here. I agree it is a privilage, because not only is it free, but you can talk about just aobut anything here. As for the MODS, I don't think that they are so much as lazy as that they are trying to let us do their own thing. If anyone sees something that is agaist the rules, don't just let it sit there then bitch about how a MOD didn't remove it, use the power you have to at least Report it. Besides, The MODS simply cannot moniter every single post that is here. That right there is simply insane. I think that we should all be thankful for the great FREE community that WinAmp has allowed us to create, and if you don't want banned, follow the rules. Apparently a rule was broken, and although I respect everyone's right to disagree with the course of action that was takin [the ban], don't simply take it out on the MODS. If someone asks a police officer what it takes to get a ticket, finds out, then goes 150 down the highway, he is most likely going to get a ticket. He is not going to evade that ticket because he was "joking" or whatever the excuse is. Like that idiot, the perputratior here knew what he was getting into. THe banning was nobody's fault but his own.

Nutshell: Be thankful for what we have here. MODS, I think your doin' a great job here. Thanks!

I think it entirely depends on the sense of humour of the mod who pulled the trigger. In the past we have had "Dismembered", which I really like, and also "Banned Fuckwit", which may have been a bit harsh but in that case was probably deserved. I'm sure there have been lots of others as well. It's just another Custom Title, like what the mods, skin reviewers, and MOTMs get.

Its hard to permanently seal someone off of the Winamp Forums. Dialup IPs don't work to stop them. Static IP addresses yes if they have some sort of broadband way that allows them that.;)
If the moderators seal off a set of IP addresses, it gets the innocent ones from not being able to view the website at all if they're on the same ISP network as the one that got IP banned.

Yeah, in some aspects, IP banning is useless. At least it does more harm then good. Almost all IPS give dynamic IP's to their customers. But they are usually very similar. Like usually only one number changes. This is done so that people can't run public webservers and things like that. Anywho, when you ban an IP, you can do second-level, third-level IP bans (I think the terms are correct, really don't remember), and that is like an IP ban on 123.45.67.* and 123.45.*.*. Most of the time, that will keep the person out. The problem when you do that is that you block out a lot of other innocent people. So, IP banning is usually a last resort (I'm not sure what the policy here is though). Usually, they will just ban usernames and email addresses. Anyway, that's your lession on banning IP's for the day.

Yes, it will be nice to know that you're about to be banned. I mean if you get banned for doing something completely stupid, then you deserve it... but if you get banned doing just something small or out of line, then that's a different story.
