get your stuff send it in post to yourself but don't open it
as it will have the date stamped, or see legal help

Bluetape's idea is good. You could also place a copy of your work in a bank's safe-deposit box, that is even better.
Quoting "(c) Bizzy D. 2002" somewhere is enough to declare copyright, though.

I suppose the previous suggestions are ok.
But if you seriously want to copyright your material,
you need to go here (http://www.loc.gov/copyright/), and follow their instructions
to properly and legally copyright your lyrics.
Then there will be no doubt when someone rips you off.
And the Copyright Office will have a record for you to refer to,
if you ever need to sue someone.

Creation is sufficient for copyrighting. A notice of copyright is no longer required for works created after 1976ish.

This is true rm'
But you need to register that copyrighted material
with the Copyright Office,
if you want to sue someone for infringement.

here in the US you have to file a copyright. They cost 30-200 USD.

you have to register with the copyright office in the UK (please don't link to the one in the US, people! he said in the UK!), or the sending it to yourself *recorded delivery* (important) works too.

blue was right. You send it to yourself by way of REGISTERED POST Then don't open it and keep it somewhere very safe.

http://www.patent.gov.uk/copy/ ?
or
http://www.intellectual-property.gov.uk/ ?
[Edit] I think, go with the bank idea... see here for reference: http://www.intellectual-property.gov.uk/std/faq/copyright/protect_rights.htm
