How do you decode or encode mp3 with winamp, and also does anybody know where one can get the cdfs.dll file that allows you to view cd tracks as waves? Thanks!

You can use the diskwriter plugin....Crtl + p > plugins > output > nullsoft diskwriter plugin.
But a better solution is cdex (http://www.cdex.n3.net/).

Taking CD's to MP3 can be done with Winamp with the CD Ripper component.
I'd reccomend Winamp3 for ripping from CD to MP3, but for MP3 to Wav use Windows's "Sound Recorder". It works wonders if you know how to use it right.

Atmo's idea is better - CDex is much more flexible for ripping CDs to a compressed audio format than using Winamp.

I did what I thought the best solution was to get the acoustica mp3 to wav converter. It's very much worth the $19.

I just took a look at their web site... http://www.acoustica.com/mp3-wav-converter/index.htm
but I don't really understand what the product offers that makes it worth paying for - CDex is free, supports MP3, WAV, OGG, and rips from CD too. CDex also normalizes files at the time of transcoding, if you tell it to.
As for the bits about detecting incomplete music downloads and trimming unwanted silence, Mp3trim will do this (and is also free). And I can tell by myself if a song is blank by the lack of music coming out.
Still, it does use the lame encoder (which is the best encoder on the market, and it's free), so at least you'll end up getting mp3s of the same quality to CDex or EAC.
