View Full Version : If I had a hammer...

Have you ever built anything, and been proud out of all proportion with it, because you did it, and it turned out like you wanted it to?
I'm building overhead storage in my garage, just some 2x6's, lag screws, nails, plywood, etc. - and to me it's the bomb baby!

By the way, I am now convinced that mankind's greatest invention is the DeWalt compound miter saw...

i used to take shop class and made some kickass stuff in it. like a wooden articulated hand that mimicked the movements of a hand in a glove. my favorite sho ptool is the bandsaw :)

"Tool up! It's Hammer time!" :D

I'm good at building stuff, but I don't do it that often. My dad always has offcuts of wood and plenty of power tools in the shed; I could probably build a soapbox racer out of the crap that's at the back of the shed, if there was any need to build one.

J. Burnaway

What kind of guy are you, needing a reason to build a soap box racer?!? Here's the reason: you're a guy, it's a thing with wheels that is supposed to go fast...now get to it! :p

I've never been that good at building stuff but then I've not ever had a lot of practice. I've done some seriously mean coding, probably most impressive due to the elegancy and speed at which it was written.

J.B., you're my hero. i've always envied men who can build stuff. i used to a bit of set construction for the school plays in highschool. i loved it, but then i got more into the acting itself. boo.

Yeah, but if I got sick of something I built, I could take it apart again. Not true of the baby. Probably.

If it was to get to the end of my street, it would need better off-road capabilities than your average jeep...

No. The Makita cordless screwdriver. It was the start of developments that have revolutionised work on building site.

Interestingly Black & Decker have copied the idea and market it under the reputation that De Walt built up with their radial arm saws.

Footnote for Chev. - it was specifically designed for stud work :)

The project was completed this weekend, despite the onset of a nasty cold which left me totally drained. I'll try to get some pics sometime this week. I'm pretty busy at work (my boss has said as soon as we get a certain number of jobs done, we are out - and if we are done by tomorrow, we get Wednesday off).

heh - I've worked with my dad since I was a kid, and on building sites for the last 8 years, so I've built a few things in my time - I usually work as a carpenter or electrician, but have turned my hand to plumbing and tiling. It pretty much paid my way through college.

Spent this weekend wiring two outhouses - sockets, lights and central breaker panel - only got one shock in the process... :D
