Anything that doesnt look funky will probably do.

The plain old block of machined copper or alluminium, with a high rpm fan work as well if not better than some of the weird new designs.

Dont bother with exotic thermal compounds, theyre a waste of money.

your hand does a good job too, but it might melt the processor. personally id use a peltier cooling system, but not everybody has 100 for a peltier cooler big enough for a 3GHz POS intel chip that supports microsoft in their TCPA control act. i hope it fries on u. buy AMD next time.:mad:

well actually, p4s are slow. My amd athalon xp 1600+ with 256 mb ddr is faster then my mom's p4 2.2ghz with 1 gb ddr. SO amd is actually a better deal (and my old 400 mhz amd k6 was faster then my dad's p4 1.6ghz)

no it isn't. READ WHAT YOU HAVE POSTED. the athlon has a clockspeed of about 1.2Ghz, the p4 has 2.2Ghz. now, which is faster?

Intel are known for changing their cooler designs quite often, but they generally provide pretty good units. Intel coolers always have quiet low-profile fans and all-aluminium heat sinks; taking that into account, they generally deliver quite acceptable performance. In fact, a stock Intel cooler used with a smear of thermal grease instead of the thermal pad they usually come with can significantly beat many of the lousier after-market coolers.

As long as youre not overclocking, the intel cooler will suffice.

Im just a kid who unstands how to build a computer but im not up on whats good along the lines of motherboards and memory. Could you help me out? I have chosen a Asus P4G8X Motherboard and a P4 3.06 processor but i wasn't happy that the motherboard didn't have speedier memory. It also has 8X AGP on it. Is this a good motherboard or is there something better?

The heatsink will not work anywhere near peak efficency without thermal grease. Just use a tiny ammount, its only there to fill in the air gaps between the cpu and heatsink.

As for the mobo question, thats a ddr chipset, and while theyre good, if you want fastest available you want the intel 850 chipset, 533 fsb and pc1066 rdram (didnt i just answer that in the other thread??)

AGP pro just has added pins that allow the motherboard to deliver more current to the card. There are very few consumer level cards that use agp pro.

AGP 8x is just agp 4x running at a faster bus speed.

However, the difference in bus speed makes little difference, I've benched at agp2x and 4x and theres not much difference.

The GeforceFX will be AGP 8x, however, it will work just fine in an AGP 4x slot.

The board you've chosen does have an AGP 8x slot, so you dont have to worry about it.

I meant preformance wise. The pentium 4s hang alot, whereas my amds dont.

A p4 2.2 should be able to stomp all over a 1600+. If it doesnt, somethings wrong somewhere.

Cas2.5 pc2100 is a bit of a concern. It was fast a year or so ago, but its just sssslllooowww nowdays. It'll be a huge bottleneck in that system. Running pc2100 memory on a 3ghz p4 is a total waste of time. Even at cas2 its still fairly slow.

If you dont wanna shell out the extra for RDRAM and an appropriate board, at least go for ddr333.

Look for a ddr333 board, and cas2 pc2700 or cas2.5 pc3200 ram (can be run at cas2@ddr333 speed). Make sure it'll be able to run at cas 2, the performance difference is quite large. Get kingmax or corsair ram.

Youre specifications look good otherwise, just dont hold it back with shitty ram.

What video card will you be using in the meantime??

Because of this, I would have no clue what sort of heatsinks are good for fast computers. Just about anything'll do for my comp.

Just out of curiosity: How many people's video cards have heatsinks? Mine does, but then again mine's one of those smart video cards. (Kind of funny...I have a fairly nice (it was nice at the time I upgraded) "smart" video card with 64 MB memory) that I use with my PIII 450 MHz processor.

How many people just upgrade all they can before they get a new comp?

Most cards have a heatsink and fan nowdays. Take a look at the heatsink on leadteks geforce4 cards...Theyre overkill to the max, just a gimmic, but they look cool.

Generally, i just keep a steady upgrade routine, and i never have to buy a complete new system. I replace my motherboard/cpu/ram/video card once a year, and upgrade other stuff when i can afford it.

You dont need it, in fact i'd put that money towards faster ram or a better heatsink.

Theyre really only useful if youre overclocking and worried about temps, or only want your fans to switch on when the system reaches a certain temperature.

The case your getting should come with speed adjustable fans, so i personally wouldnt bother.

Run 3dmark 2001 looped for an hour or so with the fans maxed, then decrease the speed a bit, loop it gain, decrease a bit, loop again and so on until the system crashes. Then up the speed a little bit, and loop for 2 hours. If it doesnt crash, you'll know you've reached the best noise/cooling compromise.

I have something similar to the digidoc, but only because i overclock occasionally and need something that kicks the fans in at a certain temperature.

They probably will bring out a newer board with more shtuff by the time you go to buy, but i can only reccomend whats available now, not what might be available in a few months. It's actually safer to buy hardware that isnt the latest and greatest, for one its cheaper, and secondly, most of the bugs will be ironed out.

clock speed isn't all that decides how fast a CPU is going to perform. The actual core in the chip can be crap, or poorly optimized. Some chips do 2 operations per 3 clock cycles and some do 1 op per 2 clock cycles. This is why an athlon 1600+ can out perform a 2.2 gig P3. What the athlon gives up in clock speed, it makes up for in the core. The BEST cpu every designed is actually the pentium pro. The core for that hasn't been matched. It has a SCORCHING fast FPU. This is why the dual Pentium Pro systems are still in use for servers where they could have been updated to newer systems.

Asus do make some nice gear, I've got an asus geforce4 ti4400 in my current system, and an A7V266 board sitting in my spare parts pile, but they dont make the best of everything. Their motherboards are generally very stable, but less tweakable than brands like msi, epox, abit etc. They usually cost a bit more too.

Yeah, Asus does carry a premium on their stuff, my next Mobo will be the Asus A7N8x, i'm gonna start doing a one by one upgrade in January/Febuary. Maybe Athlon XP 2800's will be cheaper by then :)
