I Thought It Was Illegal To Broudcast Music Over The Internet!!!

i thought you could not broadcast any kind of music over the internet because the music played is of copyright protected.

i also thought you need a licence to do this!

is this true, is it illegal ???
does anyone have an explanation to this ???
