I'm starting a website and was wondering what my best bet is for free webhosting. I know there are a bunch of crap places like geocities and angerlfire but I remember stumbling across a site that provided free hosting with no ad banners and a bunch of storage space. Does anyone know of such a place? What is my best option?

If you want to make a decent webpage with no pop-ups or banner ads, you'll probably end up having to pay. If you don't really give a crap (like me), Geocities or Freeservers work OK.

I have 20 mbs to set up for use [I may be able to arrange more if there's enough interest!!]

That's true. Well I'll admit that I pay Freeservers $5.95 a month just to store certain files and link to images, so I get FTP usage there.

Fateback (http://www.fateback.com)
May be a tad slow some times but their service pretty much doesn't have any restrictions relating to file types/stuff.

i've not yet had a problem beyond external image linking with freewebs (http://www.freewebs.com). there's a tiny little bit of tracking code (check out my website) but other than that, it's ad-free.

"You may order a 50MB SQL Server 2000 Database for only $35 per year per database."

If you like the idea of free CGI hosting/scripting as well (I know I do), try www.************* . They put a few banners on your pages, but the CGI hosting more than makes up for it.
