View Full Version : Help? Codec server problems!

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

I just spent a long time downloading a video file off Kazaa. (To be precise: the Escaflowne movie.) I downloaded two different copies of it to make sure one worked.

It turned out to be nothing but a big sound file! WHAT THE FUCK!? It said, on my Windows media player, "Error downloading Codec server." I thought I had all the damned codecs. So I go to big ole' Microsoft dot com and they tell me that it may need a codec Windows Media Player doesn't support. I'm not sure if this is the problem, however.

So... I run a Windows XP. I tried to change the file's type to a .mpeg or something else, but I don't know how... Is there anyone who's had a similar problem and can help me out?
 @ Codec servers.... GRAH!

Try getting the Nimo codec pack. I forget what version is available now, though. Just look for the most recent version. Search Google.

Just because Microsoft doesn't provide the codec doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. :)

By the way, this may not fix it. You may just have an incorrect header or something, in which case, you're pretty much screwed. Give it a try, though.

... Forgive my ignorance, I try to learn. What's an 'incorrect header?'

Divx files use headers to describe movie length, and such and such. If you do have a botched header, you may be able to fix it using VirtualDub.

Wow, I guess that's what I get for openning a ton of different threads and reading/answering them before getting to this one.

White Raven, most (all?) modern multimedia files have a header at the beginning to specify the type of file. That way, the extension becomes unimportant (except to the OS). The header carries various information: the type of encoding used, bitrate, resolution (for video), etc. If you've got a corrupt header, and you don't have a tool of some sort to fix it, and you don't magically know how to fix it by hand, then you are pretty much SOL.

P.S. It probably is just a codec that you don't have. Windows Media player can generally detect a botched header and simply fail to load the stream, rather than searching for a new codec/

okay... I downloaded the file you said, and I installed it. Now, I can't play any files on Windows Media Player.

It keeps telling me 'Windows media Player has enountered a problem and needs to close. If you would like to tell Microsoft about this problem, send an error report...'

So i click on what the technicality junk is and it gives me an extremely long list of binary code.

'Exception Code'
blahblahblahblah (Something like 0000000000005)

So... Should I uninstall Nimo and try GSpot?

Try uninstalling it. Then rebooting. Then reinstalling. Then rebooting again.

Oki-doki. <-- Wtf kinda response was 'oki doki??'
Thanks so much for your help guys, I'll tell you what happens when I reboot and blah.

Okay, I rebooted, tried GSpot and this is what GSpot told me about the file I wanted to play:

Audio format is good, codec installed. The problem's with the video codec:

VIDEO FORMAT
CODEC:
4CC:DIV3\div4 NAME:DIVX 3 Fast-Motion
STATUS: Codec Not installed

Comments:
CODE: JUNK Name: (ASCII in junk) CONTENTS: VirtualDub Build 10805

So I dunno if that helps you assess my problem, if you need more please ask...

You need the Divx3 codec. I'm probably wrong here, but I don't think Divx5 is backwards compatible with Divx3, though Divx4 is.

I downloaded a DivX player. Should that work? I downloaded the second one: The adware version or whatever.

I'd love you back, but that would probably result in jail time.
