I can't get it to look right. A lot of skins like MMD3, have that metallic coating and I can't figure it out...I've been playing all around with layer styles and I can't get it to look right. I've also looked at Tutorials and they aren't very good. Anyone know how to achieve that finished, polished metal look?

I think we could answer this question better, if we had an idea of what you are doing wrong. Can you post an ss of one of your attempts? Also which graphics program do you use?

If your looking for the brushed effect, its filter>>noise>>add noise, filter>>blur>>motion blur.
Polished one is airbrush, I think.

or gradients and layer styles.

Making the metal look the easy way is the same thing as making an aqual pill, just with metalic colors.

Here is a psd of something I just made quickly, it could do with some polishing but you get the idea.

Layer styles are lazyness... you can create much better metal effects with cutouts, gradients, blurring, and selection tricks. I'll put together a little tutorial ASAP so that you can understand what I mean.

Ok I hope you find this useful, whipped it up in about 10 minutes, and please show your results!

(This is how I create my metal anyway :))

i do pretty much the same, but without the first big feathered selection, i just use a gradient, it's easier :)

[edit]
why use metal anyway, do something ORIGINAL!
