Hmm... this should be enough downloading to keep me busy for a while. I used to watch Cowboy Bebop on Cartoon Network but then they screwed up the times that it was on.

I'm not trying to sound mean here, I'm just curious...

How can you watch the stuff? It makes my head hurt! It's no wonder kids get seizures from watching shows like that.

I've tried to watch it, but somehow I can't get into it. :( Is there a series where the characters aren't overly hyper?

m-chica: i had that same opinion about anime many years ago. i've come to like it the hard way (wasn't into it because it was popular. i hated it and came to like it slowly and painfully). what i have to say for anime is this: it's an artform, at times. the mindset takes a little getting used to, because you are american, with american customs and american ideals (i could probably substitute western in there for better effect, but whatever), and the japanese have different customs, ideals, and traditions. the hyperness is their version of our slapstick. you watch the three stooges and some might say "this is stupid, where's the humor in it" but others see classic written all over it.

anime is the same way. there's different genres, comedy, action, drama, and there's a blurry line between the three genres. ie a drama will have some comedy elements, and maybe some action elements as well. a comedy might have some drama and action too. for instance, take the series "golden boy". it's a comedy, but it switches between the three different genres regularly. one minute it will be serious and the main character is on the verge of tears, and the next minute he's waving his arms around and screaming in one of those epilepsy-inducing scenes you were talking about. a minute later and he's involved in a gripping bike race that will have you on the verge of your seat. so you switch from laughing to crying and then nail-biting. the series itself has a very immature premise: it follows the adventures of a perverted young man who travels around modern day japan, but once you look past the crude premise you've got a really heartwarming tale. there are scenes in there that make you groan and wonder what the show's writers were thinking, but most of them are really tongue-in-cheek and actually parody themselves.

in a lot of ways, i prefer the anime method of storytelling and cinematography to normal live-action american films. the matrix tried to incorporate both worlds (without the epilepsy scenes, of course), and that's a huge part of its success.

i'd have to say give the real animes a try before you write them off completely. it's not all pokemon and sailor moon, and most of the animes that i watch and love, i would NEVER let my 6 year old sister watch. give them a shot. go through the lists mentioned above, and maybe look some of them up.

you have to have an open mind though, because at first glance, you'll think that if you've seen one show where teenage heroes control giant robots to save the world, you've seen them all, and anime is all about proving that wrong. the entertainment is in the actual storytelling, not in the storyline. and before you knock that idea, it's been done before. arguably the greatest english writer of all time, mr. bill shakespeare, was notorious for taking known stories and retelling them his own way, and most of the time his version is MUCH better than the original.

just give it a shot ;)

Didn't get to see enough to really tell, and it was a long time ago. Basically, my roommate in college was Japanese and had a bunch of videos, so every once in a while when I went in to get books or something, she would be watching them. So I only caught a little bit. I remember thinking it was a lot classier than, say, Pokemon-type anime, but I think I had (and maybe still do lol) this mindset that it was all the same stuff.

THE FIRST STEP IS ADMITTING YOUR IGNORANCE, DARNIT! :D

OMG!!! you're a

BIGOT!!

:D no, you're not. but don't worry. you can rest assured with this information: some anime (a great majority of what is pumped out to the mainstream, actually) is crap. you have to sift through the good stuff, unless you have kindhearted citizens like us do it for you :D

first lesson, kemosabe: rent and watch "princess mononoke". it should be available at your local blockbuster. that'll remove any doubt in your heads that anime isn't for kids. as an added bonus, it's exceptionally dubbed, so it will also calm any latent worries you might have that it's all poorly dubbed. basically, i think that movie will give you a good healthy start toward appreciating anime, or at least cure you of your hangups. (it's either that or "neon genesis evangelion", but at ~11 hours long, it's a bit scary for the first attempt.) mononoke is a feature-length movie, that was actually released theatrically in the US about 4 years ago on a limited run.

Okay.. KEROPI AND FRIENDS?? I watched that when I was two or something. Even at two I thought it was stupid. What is with that damned frog and the DAMN can on his head????? I saw that in a little Japanese kids' show (Don't ask.) And it seems a lot of frog characters have cans on their heads... O_o

And about the 'overly hyper attitude and squeaky Japanese girl voice' syndrome you often come across in anime. For anyone who's seen the Japanese version of Escaflowne (Subtitled or just Japanese.) with Ikue Ootani playing as Merle, it can just be damn well painful.

The reason for this is that in Japan, girls with high squeaky voices like that imply a cutesy kind of nature. I've been around a group of Japanese exchange student girls... My ears were positively ringing when I got home.

It's considered 'cute' to do that. In the same way that some girls squeeze their hands together to push their boobs up. That's supposedly 'cute.' Cultural differences... Sheesh...

If a Japanese man/woman/child comes to stay at your house, never shut the door before they're out of sight. Major insult and they thin they've overstayed their welcome if you don't watch them leave.

Yes... Anyways... TriGEAR, I love the new sig... Very cute... Isn't it a bit of a play on 'Vanilla Sky?' Cute... Sucky movie though, must say...

And if you're looking for an anime movie, try Amon Saga. I rented it and it's pretty good.

You people are making my eyebrows twitch (read: Akane's style) since ya'll have obviously forgotten about RANMA 1/2!!! Excuse me for seeming like a fanboy here, but hey. Seriously bad-ASCII martial artists + insance characters + millions of little hints + women who could easily 0wnz j00 (with sheer strength, and no, they do not look like football players) + annoying fathers who get punted/smashed/etc = hella fun. I hear that compared to the movies, the series wasn't all that spiffy. Meh liked the series, so...

hmm. I've only technically seen 2 full series. Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion. DBZ, ah DBZ. People who hate Anime think every single Anime is like DBZ or Pokemon. Sure, I loved pokemon. Hell, I still have some of my cards. But still, you gotta realize not all Jap-Anime is filled with hyper caracters. Are you gonna tell me Spike Speigel is Hyper? haha :p . Personally I like the more mature storys. I wanna see Akira and Jin Roh, can anyone tell if they any good?

Try Trigun. Or Cowboy Bebop. Most of the episodes in these rely on depth to support the animation, instead of animation trying to convey depth of story.
