I just heard about Milkdrop (from a Mac forum out of all places) and gave it a shot on my PC and all I can say is

This thing is beautiful and it blows away any other visualization I've ever seen before, much better than the standard repetitive iTunes visuals and more stunning than the Geforce ones, many a Mac user would be eternally grateful if this was ported for iTunes.:)

I also have recently found, on a mac related site most likely the same one as Ms V, a topic about MilkDrop and its wonderful graphics...   :D I looked at the link and wow the sceen shots are grate. I, along with many mac and iTunes users, would love if MilkDrop was ported to iTunes.

Is there any possibility of this.

Seriously, having used Windows for so many years, I am aware of Winamp, and the many wonderful visuals that exist for it. Please, please, please port this wonderful visual for iTunes.

If Andy can port G-Force, surely Ryan can port MilkDrop.

I too come form the same Mac site :)

Sorry guys, I don't like your chances - Ryan probably doesn't even read these forums anymore, and nobody has heard from him in ages.

Btw - what's the site that you came from? I'd be interested to read it.

Yeah, I'm from the same site, I was looking around Ryan's for a place to provide feedback or request this and this was the only thing I found, if there's any way to get in touch with him that would be great.:)

I too am a mac user and have heard very good comments about Milk Drop.

Am wondering though, can Milk Drop be used as a stand alone visualizer, like G-Force can ?? Then it could be use for live gigs etc.( A bit of a waste if its just stuck in am mp3 player.)

I was also wondering if Milk Drop might work in one of those Windows emulation programs,( ie,Virtual PC.). If Milk Drop really is that nice, this may be a solution, instead of having to buy a PC just for 1 program.

Thanks for any tips / thoughts..

Won't work. VPC will not emulate the 3d card required for Milk Drop.

Bummer. Guess i wont be able to try it out on the Mac then. Also doesent look like it can be used as a stand alone app either.

Oh hum.

Maybe the new MD clone (if its released) could be ported to the mac.

Even better, It's possible to set up winamp to monitor a signal (such as a linein signal), and use that to generate the vis. There are some low-latency linein plugins for winamp, which allows the vis to be pretty much synced, as if it were the computer generating the music.

I read the thread at the mac site about milkdrop...

Theoretically, Porting Milkdrop to the Mac (in whatever form) is entirely possible. The fact that MD uses directX, and macs use only OpenGL is neither here nor there. Both systems are capable of generating the same images. Milkdrop doesn't use any of the fancy features of directX, and wouldn't need to use any exclusive OpenGL features either. The only thing that Milkdrop actually uses the 3d card for, is the very fast bandwidth between the card's memory and GPU, and the fact that the GPU is very efficient at doing colour blending, and floating-point mathematics. These are basic features of graphics accelerators that have been around forever (even on the lowly voodoo1), and OpenGL and DirectX are both equally capable of performing something like this.

The fact that it is a different architecture would mean that the rendering and transformation aspect of milkdrop would need to be re-written from the ground up, but there is no reason, the two versions couldn't look exactly the same.

just a few things
1 Any chance for somebody getting the sourcecode for MD?

2 Any idea if somebody could code a reaper ap? (scans a directory for 0 rated presets and then moves them to a compressed file)

3 part of a way to do sets of presets
(say a half dozen rovastar one) would be to copy them to a directory and then ..

I would imagine Milkdrop would stay winamp exclusive.
Just thinking of Milkdrops power on the crappy iTunes would be sad.

As it is Winamp kicks butt.

Itunes is a resource hog that will definetly slow down if used with MD.

Hi, I'm from the future.

Milkdrop is STILL the single most amazing piece of code ever written :)
