Almost one year ago me and a very good friend had the funny idea to throw a small (house/trance) party for the somewhat older partyminded people (minimum 21, average 25) a part of our concept is to be different in the way we want you to experience the music. A location with great ambiance (old theather with balconys and the Dj close to the crowd), relative low entrance price, max 400 partypeople and always something new to get the attention. I was playing around with milkdrop for some time before we did the first party. I hired a big-ass 1500 Lumen Infocus XGA Beamer, fixed a nice 4x3 meter screen behind the DJ-booth, hooked my PC on to the beamer and a live sound input from the DJ-mixer.

The response from the public was good :) and it became better since I learned to use the img settings to throw all kinds of stuff on the big screen.

Do you recognize your presets?

I did some little shows in a local club but since a few months other partyorganisations are asking me to come and show my stuff (and your presets ;)) on their partys. The upper 3 are in a 2000ppl club, the lower ones are from our last party last sunday.

The last thing I need to master is the creation of my own presets, I alter some but I didn't have any time to learn the art of presets yet. But since I have 3 bookings (+ 2 events of our own) in the next 2 months I need to fix my own stuff.

So anyone else is showing the awsome milkdrops around at big events?

Respect to the Winamp & Milkdrop crew and the fine artists who made the great presets!

I'm a very very newbie in the preset authoring business.. but when I have the time (still in school and stuff) I'm going to throw a rock at it :D

w00t...

I'm getting overloaded with gigs lately... Tomorrow is the opening of an new bookingagency in a nice club.. on which I will VJ :)

saturday 013,sunday on our own party in The Avenue and 7 june on a 5K rave

I'm really getting the hang of the sprites editing stuff now... moving stuff around over the screen and reacting to the music is fun too :D

If Brennan is a Dutch DJ that spins at Multigroove, yes... but I doubt it ;)

I'm short of time creating sprites and the milk_img.ini file... but I've found a nice solution... create them real-time with my laptop connected with a laplink cable, photoshop a sprite, edit the milk_img.ini on the laptop, test the sprite.. if ok, copy sprite to the and update the ini file on the PC that's projecting :)

Excellent use of images. I use them occasionally, but maybe not quite that effectively. I do a weekly gig on Thursday in Raleigh, NC at bickett gallery (http://www.bickettgallery.com).

I integrate MilkDrop in with live cameras, but don't currently have any pics online of that at the moment. I do record all my events to Videotape (so shoot me email if you'd like to arrage for me to send you a copy).

For pics of a past event with plenty of MilkDrop in effect go here:

http://www.trianglefuturemusic.com/halloween/01_rh/20.htm

I'm also writing a preset generator program that may help you to create presets and learn how to write them. Just do a search for EMPR.

And again, excellent work Morninglight.

Nice :) I'd like to see some work... pics or vid is ok.

Which preset is this:

http://www.trianglefuturemusic.com/halloween/01_rh/23.htm

?

I hope to have a Panasonic AVE5 videomixer and a 1500 lumens beamerin 10-15 days, I will use more video but I'm not going to turn my back on MD! My Idea is to superimpose/picture-in-picture objects onto a MD background and mix video with some presets.

upcoming gigs:

7th juni Impressive Utrecht The Netherlands (hardhouse/hardstyle 2K ppl rave) 2500 lumens beamer on a 6x4mter screen :D

8th juni TwistedAvenue Breda The Netherlands (trance/house 700ppl rave) 1250lumens on a 4x3mtr screen

Hope to get the mixer working for those gigs :)

Oh yeah, MilkDrop forever. Or until Ryan Geiss relenqueshes more of his genius onto the work through another program of visual brilliance.

Actually, I've been contemplating trying to reverse engineer a MilkDrop clone so I could add in some feature like MIDI Sync, Video Capture, and extra 3D planes and objects, but don't tell Mr. Geiss I said that. :)

I'll see what I can do about posting up some newer pics and/or video clips for everyone to give a looksee.

And I'll try to track down that preset you asked about at Tonite's show (to verify idiot's comment).

nice one... already had a 5 rating in my 1700 presets list

I'm bidding like crazy on ebay to get my hand on a hardware videomixer... gonna buy resolume VJ software to run on my normal PC to have more options in sprites/video/effects, MD will move to my lappy to provide the background stuff :)

I had a nice chat with a 1500ppl club owner, vision impossible (http://www.vision-impossible.nl) has a weekly contract there for the saturdays but there are more days in the weekend, even option of backup VJ for saturdays is fine with me at the moment :)

WJ-AVE5.. just a simple mixer to get started, I'm going to use MD for background and resolume to mix stuff... I'm a little short on video material and videomix experience so I'm going to start with that :)

The superimpose function is about useless but the mixing works very good

I'll post some pics after my 2 shows (7 and 8 june) :)

Only used the bog standard MX50 and MX12's (common over here)

From whta I have heard the Edirol V4 is the mixer to buy although yet to see one in the flesh yet.

Morninglight
21st May 2003, 23:21
MX12 (~€500) and the MX50 (~€2000) are way over my budget at the moment..

the edirol goes for about €1100 and has a very good review at vjcentral.com so I think that will be my next mixer, if I get booked enough ;)

I'm playing with swift3d 3D Flash for titles and stuff.. that rocks when mixed with MD

http://home.planet.nl/~mn_groen/2dtilf.swf (180KB)

that's ~1 minute work (10 sec creating, 50secs rendering)

Rovastar
21st May 2003, 23:53
The MX50 isn't worth 2,000 euro/pounds anymore.

The v4 is looking lik ethe way to go.

Have you done any keying yet on your mixers. The space/multiverse starfield ones can look nice.

Morninglight
22nd May 2003, 08:47
There is no lumaky function on my mixer.. only a superimposer but that is about useless according to the review @vjcentral... I will have to try some to get working for me.

This mixer was €171 and I bought the titler for a few € extra... that was my budget ;)

Magic.X
24th July 2003, 11:59
I can get a 2200 Ansi Lumen Beamer + RC for about 80€ a night.

I never had superhuge gigs like 500+ ppl but the Netherlands always had a hyperactive techno scene (i remeber the booming hardcore times)

Morninglight
24th July 2003, 15:20
my largest audience was 675 ppl last januari in Tilburg...

€80,- for a beamer is very very cheap, the €80,- is just enough the pay for the "wear" of the lamp... I know a dude who has some beamers for hire... I pay about the same for a 1500l Infocus or and 2400l Sony, but the sony sucks a bit.. IMHO the infocus is sharper and about even on light production :)

my last gig was monday in the 013 tilburg (residency every 2 months :D) first time with resolume and my midikeyboard.. it went well but I need much much more video/flash material to fill the 6 hours

Why don't you try out AVS?

IMHO the avs presets differ much more in style and behavoiur the those of md do.

I use MD (runnig on my laptop) for the breaks in the music and for when I'm chilling in my dressingroom.. I use Resolume (running on my PC) with flash and video loops/material for the rest.. I mix it with my panasonic videomixer :)

so VJ mode in 1.04 could come in handy for me...

But as a 'real' VJ, would you like to do some betatestings for my upcoming new version of Hotlist (AVS VJ-Tool) because most of the other AVS'ers are not VJ'ing that much.

I use MD to mix and superimpose stuff onto other material.. and now the new version is here I'm going to use it more and more cause there are more object like things in the visuals that I like to use... not just the waves and flames stuff that are "kinda" boring when VJing in a club or something...

I'd love to betatest.. but I don't know SH*T about AVS and I don't know if I like the stuff I can do with AVS

IMHO AVS doesn't look very good full screen and the frame rate sucks

Tuggummi
26th August 2003, 11:18
Yes AVS sucks at Vj:ing. It's more for personal enjoyment :)

Why it sucks for Vj:ing?

1) It crashes often (i guess it would be pretty humiliating if the screen suddenly disappears...)

2) It's slow!

3) Slow

4) Did i mention slowness?

5) The beat detection blows and is unable to detect the beat from a live feed (if i remember right, avs calculates the beats and then makes a "intelligent" guess for the bpm of the whole song and since live feed is basicly a endless song, you know what that means...).

6) Most presets don't work in highres, because they weren't designed for highres'es (doh  )

Magic.X
26th August 2003, 11:50
1. it nearly never crashed, even when running for hours!

2. + 3. + 4. its ok when using lowres + overlay to output

5. therefore we have a readapt button (and remote readapting in hotlist 2.3)
you could also turn to standard (no prediction)

6. meh...

Tuggummi
26th August 2003, 12:00
1) clearly you don't run the ever-so-cool and complex presets of UnConeD, Jheriko, Skupers, Zevensoft... You're, or should i say your crowd is missing out a lot...

2) Might look better with a projector since you gain some "extra smoothness" to the image.

5) Who uses that? :p

6) blaah...

Morninglight
26th August 2003, 20:35
some mud throwing in my Vj topic

1. Nearly never is not good enough ;)

2. I use a P3-m 866mhz with a ATi Mobility m6 16MB DDR for the visuals @800x600 which I output to my videomixer at s-video (768x576@25fps) MD reaches 40-60fps woich is overkill

5. I use beat detection!

6. see 2

but I'm in the process of learning Flash for my real VJ app so I think I won't have time to even look at AVS and MD is more than sufficient for what I use it for. :)

I just recieved a a nice email with the message that I won a VJ contest for a set in the "Waakzaamheid" The Netherlands on a nice hardhouse event  www.in2beats.com

Yeah always above 40-60fps with text and sprites?! as well ??! with a 1024x1024 texture size and maximum mesh on?? The horrible matrox 16MB G450 I am using at the moment as not at my machine runs like a pig. I never use any sprites or text in MD anymore because I can mix flash/video with my Panasonic videomixer :D

True you have a quicker card then the g450 but not quicker than my gf4ti :)

Don't use text and sprites dear me. That would be find if they didn't have the 'burn' feature but MilKkrop does and that is the key. It is by far the most impressive part about the sprites and text.

No mixer in the world can do that.:)

It's very hard to take good pics of the fast moving stuff, you need a very light sensitive camera like the Sony F717 and do some photoshoppin with levels afterwards to get it right.
