Has Nullsoft released figures indicating the decline of visits at the WA2 site, after WA3 was made the homepage?
If yes what are they?
how severely has WA3 affected WA2 program & skin downloads?

Hey, I don't totally rely on the statistics, B'cos as they say,
"Statistics is like a Miniskirt, what it reveals is suggestive, but what it hides is unknown!.":D

WA3 was made the homepage as soon as WA3 was released, to attract as many people as possible to the new program. Recently, Nullsoft realised that while WA3 had many good things going for it, like the free-form skinning engine, many people declined from using it, since it guzzled many more resources than WA2. The new WA2.9 has taken a few of those good things from WA3, and subsequent versions of winamp are planned which will essentially run on the WA2 engine, while giving users the option of using WA3 free-form skins on it. In other words, WA2 and WA3 will most likely be joined into a hybrid winamp program, possibly called WA5 (2+3=5)

This does not have ANYTHING to do with skins now, does it.
Just leave the internal Winamp affairs to Nullsoft, they do not concern you.
True, but people get curious.
But does it really matter which version people prefer? If you like wa2 the use it and if you dont, use wa3. Simple as that.

1) Yes, it could do. Perhaps he is wondering how much less exposure WA2 skins are getting to the WA3 monsters
2) Surely you realise a company's main concern ought be its customers and transparency is always a good thing. Just ask the Swedes.

I will say one thing, the rate of WA2 skin submissions has dropped to nearly zero, I don't know if this is down to the fact that they are hidden on http://classic.winamp.com/skins or that people are simply not making them any more.
The submissions are steady, but no where near the massive volumes we used to get, it tells you something that the WA2 skin publishing queue is cleared several times a day due to lack of acctual skins in it, who can remember when there were weeks and sometimes months worth of skins in there?
Not any more :)

Things have improved since 2.9's release, but im wondering how many people who visit winamp.com really know about it.
If you look up it still says "NEW! Download Winamp3". Unless the surfers have clicked the looking for winamp2 link at the top of the page, are an active member here, or read about it's release on another board or betanews they probably wouldnt have any idea it's been released.
You'd think that with a new release they'd be trying to promote it, but i guess not.

maybe they will promote it when its actually done... sounds like a good plan to me

There was some wacky quote going around the beta mailing list from Steve G about the site, WA2.90 and life, but I'd be "dissapeared" if I re-printed it here :p

perhaps, knowing about the 'statistics' can give new members a gauge on whether or not to invest time in developing skins/plugins for one or the other products of nullsoft. It to me seems sound and a good idea to make your decision based on what people actually are using rather than taking only for granted that the new product is the champion of all. We are all aware of the shortcomings of both and have drawn our own lines in the proverbial sand based on this fact. However, for new members/users of the product a line is not so easily drawn if they are attempting to make a skin/plugin.
I think it was an excellent question to ask even if their is no real answer.

Soon could be anything from 6 months to 6 years, this is nullsoft remember..
Winamp3 would have happend two years ago, but we had the munchies
'nuff said.
Bah, we don't need statistics to tell us which version people want. Just take a look at the number of dowloads the wa3 skins are getting. Even a poor wa3 skin gets more downloads than a featured wa2 skin. That says a lot.

I dont know if it has all that much to do with what people want, but moreso what people see. Remember all the threads with people asking what happened to the winamp2 skins, well there's probably a thousand times as many people who wondered the same thing but didnt bother asking or looking around, gave up and started using winamp3.

Also take into account the fact that both the Minibrowser and Skin Browser in Winamp 2.81 and 2.90 still point to www.winamp.com/skins instead of http://classic.winamp.com/skins
Many users (especially n00bs) have downloaded WAL files thinking they can be used with 2.81 and 2.90
Take this thread (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99555) as the living proof and perfect example.
Note: There's 100's of other (smaller and more specific) threads.
If true statistics were available, I think we'll find that there's just as many (if not many more) users still using 2.x, and even more are either now ditching WA3 for 2.90 or eagerly awaiting the new hybrid version.
In other words, keep those 2.x skins coming,
but don't give up on freeform wal skins either, because (apparently/hopefully) both will be supported by the new hybrid player. Some people prefer squared windows, some prefer freeform.
Seeing the new player's being built on the 2.x engine, then I reckon there's a good chance we could get it on schedule . . . or at least sometime this year, hehe. But don't quote me on that, lol :D

Yeah, & accept it or not, the squared skins are going to make place for freeform skins,
& those skinmakers unfamiliar with that idiotic scripting languages are going to die for response to their skins!
