View Full Version : Milkdop run as a standalone app

I run milkdrop on a dualmonitor setup, and there is one feature missing - the possibility to use winamp on one screen, when milkdrop is running on the other.

I would like to do change song, jump to song, stop/play etc. from winamp on the other screen, while milkdrop is running. That is not possible. Maybe it would be possible if milkdrop ran fullscreen in it's own window?

btw, is milkdrop discontinued? It's been a looong time since last update... :(

GeeZuZzz:

what you are saying is possible, i do it all the time. thats how you control MD during a live show. prbably depends a little one the video card and configuration but it is possible.

on the other hand LIVE all i ever do is use winamp to accept and convert the line in from the DJ, so a stand alone app is still a good idea, but id rather have an active x control wrapper to writ my own
app.

No, i guess you mean the possibility to keep all text in it's own window on the other screen.

I mean, run milkdrop fullscreen on one screen, while the winamp player is placed on the tother screen, and control winamp clicking on the buttons/playlist. That does not works correctly. It is possible to right click though

i am sure i understood you, milkdrop fully funtional on one screen and winamp fully funtional on the other.

i do use vj mode which runs along side the winamp controls, it all works fine.

i must say i am using win2K which i believe has different dual screen properties than win98.

if i am not mistaken, win 98 has one big desktop and win2k has 2 seperate desktops. or somthng like that.

either way what you are asking is possible.

but it is probably configuration and video card dependant.

in fact, it is possible in win98 because my TV output machine runs 98 rel 2.

but has a special video driver, and i had to tweak the bios a bit.
but it does work.

good luck

I used it on Win98SE with a GeForce 2MX, and it was viewed as one big desktop. The best way to get around this was to run MD as one big window on one monitor, and just leave Winamp running as normal on the other, I just adjust the edges of the screen so you can't see the border of the window.

Running it any other way, as you said, means that you can't have control over Winamp, which is kind of annoying.

What video card / OS do you have, GeeZuZzz?

Does the new SDK as in MOnkey/Smoke allow this (cannot check ATM) as that is what will be implemented.

just for kiks i checked my machines, and..

win2k runs as two seperate desktops and works exactly as was requested above, perfectly. the same machine and video running 98rel2 has one big desktop and works incorectly as described above.

my 98 "settop pc" has a s3 savage video card dual monitor VGA that works like win2k with two seperate destops, and works great BTW....except milkdrop causes a directx error, because the VGA driver does not enable a DLL somewhere. so if you run milkdrop first, then it crashes. i fixed it by writing a seperate driver patch that corectly sets up DX8 and does a soft BIOS tweak to correct the video output levels to the TV converter.

the moral is if you want to run MD and winamp at the same time, fullscreen, get win2k, or a degree in computer engineering.

FWIW: win2k is awesome it works fantastic, it is faster, has great crash recovery, and has been 100% compatible with all my 98 sofware. well worth the effort.

Doing what you want is possible (though slightly irritating)

Run two copies of Winamp, one playing your songs, and the other accepting the input of the first winamp (via internal line-in), and running milkdrop. If you use low-latency plugins, and set your buffering up appropriately, it can work well enough that you can't tell that the vis and the music isn't directly linked.

I've posted about this before, with better details. Run a search.

Why can't you just use VJ mode?

now i am really confused????

why would want to run two copies with one just running milkdrop from the others audio?

i was sure that he just had the big desktop problem, and i have no idea how two winamps would fix that, unless one was running on another machine.

please explain.
