I have done this, although it has been some time... so I am a bit rusty.

I had to use 3 programs to get it all done. I used DVD Decrypter to bust the DVD into its componts, something called Flask to extract the audio soundtrack, then Cool Edit Pro to actually edit the sound track and turn it into playable MP3 files. There are tutorials on the web that can walk you through this.

which reminds me, is there any way to rip songs from a 5.1 DVD-Audio CD and create a 5.1 fully discrete surround sound compressed format (like mp3) of them?

Because I know Linkin Park's Reanimation was released in DVD Audio format, just thought it would be cool.

Dunno if the mp3 compression process would support 5.1.... That would seem to be asking for an awful lot.

Justin would know.

Use smartripper to extractthe VOB's to your hard drive.

use GraphEdit (http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/audio-extract.htm) to extract the audio, and OggdropXPd to encode to... ogg

Not the most straightforward interfaces but "nickyguides" are dead on accurate to walk you through everything.

In IFO mode, DVD Decrypter supports stream processing, so you can get the audio file you want directly. If it's in AC3 format, then you can just use the prog of your choice to encode to mp3 or ogg.

I just used DVD Audio Ripper to rip the audio off of a RATM DVD:

'Twas quite simple.

yes. CD's and DVD's use different lasers to read the data. so in order to rip a dvd audio disc, you need a dvd drive. (combo cd burner/dvd drive combo ftw!)
