I found a really fascinating article, written back in 1992.
I'd like to see this written again today.

25 Greatest Guitar Solos (http://www.thereducers.com/clippings/musician.html#Morse)

I'd add to that list the solo by Duane Allman on the song "Dreams"
off the first Allman Brothers Band album.
The best slide guitar piece ever.

My own favourite Rush/Freewill. Also very fond of the feedback symphonies of JAMC and Curve. I've no knowledge of 60's & 70's guitar music (except they wore the guitars higher on the chest and occasionally dowsed them in petrol/set them alight). Must have been cold on stage.

Slash's effort from the middle of November Rain gets my vote. A lot of G n' R's early work contains some excellent fretwork. Then Hendrix's Voodoo Chile, and Van Halen's Eruption, in my opinion. I'd need a week to think this one through properly.

Lost the album years ago and heard this for the first time in ages last night, part of a film soundtrack. Then up pops this thread.

Anyway no list would be complete without something by Jerry Douglas.

Jimmy Hendrix hands down. Especially his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. :)

Just been watching Jack Bruce on TV :

"The function of the bass player is to make the rest of the band sound better than they really are".
