Anyone who's read a few of my posts in this forum already know my favorite diva. I have every song she's ever released to the public, plus 34 unpublished demos she recorded to a 4-track in her bedroom in 1992 and handed out to her friends, and 44 other songs comprising all the unreleased demos for her next-to-last album.
http://members.roadfly.com/ccalmer01/LizPhair4.jpg
I like Liz as a singer, songwriter and musician overall, but looking only at strength-of-voice, my favorite is one that many people would roll their eyes at: LeAnn Rimes. I've yet to hear any voice in this world with as much force as hers. Listen to Sign Of Life, Damn and her rendition of How Do I Live for evidence of this.
I have an unexplainable attraction to the female voice, so well over half of the vocalists in my music collection are women. Other solo artist on my shelf that I really like are:
Chantal Kreviazuk
Vanessa Carlton
Avril Lavigne (OK, some of you will gag, but I like her!)
Shawn Colvin
Madonna
Natalie Imbruglia (also a model and commercial actress)
Michelle Branch
Jewel
Donna Lewis
Norah Jones
Faith Hill
Cher (no one else has mentioned the "Supergoddess of all Divas"???)
Paula Cole
Björk
Dido Armstrong
Bonnie Tyler
Suzy Bogguss
Milla Jovovich (also a movie actress and model)
Alanis Morissette
Nina Gordon (formerly with Veruca Salt)
Carol Decker (T'Pau)
Trisha Yearwood
Sarah McLachlan
Shania Twain (moving away from liking her so much, though...lyrics are too odd for my taste)
Tori Amos
Pam Tillis
Cyndi Lauper (I've really loved Cyndi's work since the mid-80s)
Boy George (umm, wait.....)And female singers who have not (to my knowledge) done solo work, but who are still among my favorites are:
Shirley Manson (garbage)
Tina Weymouth (Tom Tom Club, Talking Heads)
Gwen Stefani (No Doubt)
Deborah Harry (Blondie)
Cindy Wilson, Kate Pierson (The B-52's)
Kelli Dayton (Sneaker Pimps)
Jennifer Finch, Suzi Gardner, Donita Sparks, Demetra Plakas (L7)
Courtney Love (Hole, practically her solo band I guess you could say)

I've just recently gotten into Kathleen Hanna's work...thanks for telling more about it, now I know what else to look for. For many years I've been a fan of female alternative and indie rock, but my Riot Grrrl addiction is more recent. :D
@spaceplay: When it was on TV, I wasn't really into Twin Peaks...I saw maybe two or three episodes. Nowadays my tastes are different, and I'd love to see it if it were ever on TV. What I should do is buy a DVD with the first few episodes and see if I get into it...I bet I would. I know it was a weird show, but the weirder the better...I'm a Lexx fan, after all. ;)

Masha Qrella
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Masha+Qrella
http://www.headquarter-entertainment.de/english/bands_masha.php
Julia Guther
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Guther
Margaret Fiedler (Laika (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Laika))
Ayako Akashiba (mainly for her work with Guitar (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Guitar))
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Ayako+Akashiba
And from the old skool...
Joni Mitchell's probably already been mentioned, but she's worth mentioning again.
If you've not heard much (or anything) by her, start with "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" (1977) & "Hejira" (1976)
Grace Slick, mainly for her work with Jefferson Airplane (1967-72)
Edie Brickell, if not just for 'Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars' alone...
and Julianne Regan (All About Eve), if not just for "Scarlett and Other Stories"
Other blasts from the/my past:
Judie Tzuke
Suzanne Vega
Christine Newby, aka: Cosey Fanni Tutti (Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey)
Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance, solo)
and no-one's even mentioned Siouxsie Sioux :-)
or Sinead O'Connor (solo, Jah Wobble, Afro Celt Sound System, Massive Attack)
Talking of Sinead O'Connor, which links me to other guest vocalists for Massive Attack from over the years, including:
Elizabeth Frazer (Cocteau Twins, TMC) <-- and possibly the best voice of all time :-)
Tracey Thorn (EBTG)
Nicolette
Shara Nelson (not into her cheesy solo work, but the stuff with Massive Attack is legendary)
and Kristin Hersh (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Kristin+Hersh) probably also deserves a mention (ex Throwing Muses).
Her latest album "Learn To Sing Like A Star" is literally back on song, and pretty good.
mmmm, Collide & Curve (from page 1 of this thread)
Hmm, and all the rest are lead singers of bands, not solo artists, so I guess I won't bother mentioning them then...
*cough* Jane Tilley (Perfume Tree (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Perfume+Tree)) *cough*
*cough* Louise Rhodes (Lamb) *cough*

http://www.within-temptation.com/  Yes, I love it almost as much as Nightwish. Sharon den Adel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharon_den_Adel) has a fantastic voice.
But, for my favorite female artist: Tarja Turunen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarja_Turunen)
Ex-lead singer of Nightwish, she now has a solo career. I would consider her to be one of the best singers I have heard in "real" music. Her singing is more in the style of opera, which isn't very common.
