I have not found a direct answer to my question so I will post it here. I have looked on pages of this forum and I prefer not to look on 30 pages for an answer. I rather be called a moron on this forum than be sued $150,000.

Ok lets say I have a station and it is streaming Top 40 music. Can the band/record company sue me for not paying royalty fees? How do I obey copyright laws and stream in peace? Are there any fees I have to pay? Thank you for your time and asistance.

The rules/laws vary depending on the source location.

For folks in the U.S.A. (and others wanting a good read), try this for starters (http://www.shoutcast.com/download/broadcast.phtml#copyright).

You must typically obtain what is known as a performance license for any public use of copyrighted music. This typically involves paying royalties and submitting reports based upon your specific uses of all music in your broadcst. I've worked with ASCAP and BMI to provide a service which simplifies much of the cost and complexity of Internet music licensing for individual Webcasters. It may be of interest to you.
