Francois K was/is some shit hot DJ type from New York, came up thru the 70's and 80's
You might know him from some of his mix work on the Cure, Kraftwerk, or his production of Depeche Mode from the early 90's, in particular the Violator album, or any of the single mixes from the album, check out "enjoy the silence (bass line)" mix  , personally I don't think Violator would have been half the album it was without his production, the original Enjoy the silence on the album was mixed by someone else and it stands out like a sore thumb from the other 8 or 9 Francois K produced tracks, I replaced it on my burnt copy with a version mixed by him :D
Still producing, dj'ing and mixing today.
Check out his record label,

I would have to agree with Lifeforms by FSOL, best ambient-techno album ever. I would add a couple of records by The Orb "Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld" and "UF ORB" :)
My knowledge is limited in this area, though :(

I haven't got any of those, I'll put them on my very long lost. I have the Orb/Blue Room and FSOL/Dead Cities. Neither is anything special.
Have you heard either Stranger or Michelle by Clan of Xymox Twilightseer? If you look at AMG you'll see where I'm coming from (if you like New Order or the Cure).....

A bit more "ambient" than "electronic", but I recommend Jonn Serrie (http://www.vipinfo.com/jonn/jonmusic.htm):
And the Stars Go With You
Flightpath
Planetary Chronicles I & II
Some great "sex" music:
Music to Disappear In - Raphael

SOme clasic albums listed in this thread:
Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman
FSOL - Lifeforms
Kruder and Dorfmeister - The K&D Sessions
Global Communication - 76 14
and adding
APhex Twin - Selected Ambient WOrks 85-92
Four Tet - Rounds
Royksopp *sigh* over hyped and over here. Dear me an average downbeat band with very good marketing. The first ablum release what was that 2 years ago now didn't get teh aclaim they felt it deserve and released it and realeased it and then released singel from liek 2 years ago. Then released remixes of these 2 year old tracks. SOld out completely. The next album will be the true test I guess they will do nothing decent just plenty of advertising.
Cylob
28th August 2003, 10:41
I liked Royksopp's album, at least 4 excellent tracks IMO. How can you not like Eple, Poor Leno or Remind Me?? It's how pop music should be.

*sigh* Oh well. BTW is your handle after the Electronica Artist Cylob on Aphex Twins Rephlex label (are they still there. *shrug*)
Cylob
28th August 2003, 12:17
Correct on both counts. I'm not into the band Cylob really, I just like one of their tracks ('Living in the 1980's') and their name. Most the the Rephlex stuff is just noise. Aphex Twin is total crap. I haven't heard any M-uziq stuff yet, it's not a priority.

I'm amazed no one has mentioned the grad daddy of all Electronic groups, Kraftwerk.
Any of their early stuff should be right up there in any bleep bloopers collection, in fact they have a new album out right now, first in nearly god knows how many years ..
Tour De France Soundtracks..

The new album (if you can call it that) is on my virtual shopping list. About 10 albums down. Should be worth a laugh.
Captain Bottles
28th August 2003, 14:44
I've heard it. It isn't bad, per se, but it's no more worth getting than, say, any other decent album - which, since we're judging by Kraftwerk standards, makes it more satisfying NOT to listen to. :(
Don't do it. You'll regret it.

I don't care much for Kraftwerk, just because you're a pioneer of a genre doesn't automatically make you good.

True, and most Kraftwerk albums IMO are patchy. But they have made some excellent tracks:
The Model
Pocket Calculator
Tour De France
Autobahn
To name a few. Computer World & Trans-Europe Express take a little getting into. But it's ultimately worth the effort.

Fixed,
In future, it's better to post links to images rather than big ass images, think of the kids on dial up...
We have the restriction for safetys sake, what's to stop someone starting a flame war, calling someone every name under the sun and then editing out all the bad stuff once someone complains about it.
3 Hours is in my opinion way to long to let people edit things, 15 minutes max if I had my way, gives you time to post, review and correct any mistakes you might have made.

Heh, everything I was going to say has already been said.
I'll re-iterate Royksopp's Melody AM as a good choice. Then there's Daft Punk's second album, Discovery. It just feels and sounds good. I'm also a fan of Surrender by the Chemical Brothers.
I recognise some of these other names from when I used to trawl the house / ambient sections of the record shops with Jonno. We'd just spin random rare vinyl on the decks all afternoon, I hardly ever bought anything, :blah:

I will re-iterate again Royksopp's are an average downbeat/pop combo. Why is it the album had to be re-released (haha I do laugh when they were on best newcomer albums last year. The album came out teh year before.). There are a lot better of that genre. COmpare to more of the genre like dZihan & Kamiens 'Freaks and Icons' of about the same period...or anything from Klein Records, etc, etc

I haven't heard of these. Is there any likelihood of getting their material (otherwise it's just names). I don't think anyone said Royksopp were the best thing since sliced bread, just a quality pop band. Melody AM is a quality album, you could do alot worse. I would consider it one of the decent releases of 2002, a must-have in my collection.

I've sought out a lot of E music to sample in the past month or so, and discovered I've got a very narrow taste for what I like. The ones I've had for a while tend to be my favorites. A lot of the stuff I didn't own but listened to made it clear to me why I didn't own it.
I guess the best way to describe what I look for is what I consider the "character" of the music. That's not to say there's no character (or even less character) in the E music I don't like...it's just that I like a certain type of character.
Favorites from my collection:
The Chemical Brothers ~ Surrender (1999) <--- (My current favorite of all...reeks of "character" ;) )
The Chemical Brothers ~ Dig Your Own Hole (1997)
The Crystal Method ~ Vegas (1997) (I consider this "PowerElectronica")
Fatboy Slim ~ Better Living Through Chemistry (1996)
Fatboy Slim ~ You've Come A Long Way, Baby (1998) (My first FBS album...I was hooked immediately, although his debut album is my favorite of all his work.)
Fatboy Slim ~ On The Floor At The Boutique (1998)
Fatboy Slim ~ The Fatboy Slim/Norman Cook Collection (2000)
Kraftwerk ~ Computer World (1981) (Too nerdy for company to hear, but I listen when alone pretty often. :) )
Lo Fidelity Allstars ~ How To Operate With A Blown Mind (1998)
Lo Fidelity Allstars ~ On The Floor At The Boutique (1999)
Ozric Tentacles ~ Jurassic Shift (1993)
Prodigy ~ The Fat Of The Land (1997)
Synergy ~ Games (1979) (I bought this LP when it was brand new. My first foray into E music. Electronica before Electronica was cool. Larry Fast is an absolute genious.)
Synergy ~ Audion (1981)
And two others I own but don't like so much:
Fatboy Slim ~ Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars (2000) (Sounded a little like N.C. was going for a radio single...somewhat disappointing. "You've Come A Long Way" was edging in that direction a little, and after Illuminati, I haven't heard anything new from him I liked much at all.)
Paul Oakenfold ~ Tranceport (1997) (Everything after the first song was like I was listening to the same track over and over. Guess I got spoiled by sheer variety of tracks on The Chemical Brothers albums.)
Cylob
10th December 2003, 08:54
The Chemical Brothers & Fatboy Slim are entirely disposible. The Lo-Fidelity Allstars lost the plot after How to Operate With A Blown Mind.:( Shame, tracks like Lazer Sheep Dip Funk are top-notch.
I'm moving away from techno and into electro.

I agree entirely. Except I would replace the word "disposable" with "timeless". :D I guess my main disappointment was Paul Oakenfold. I heard several people say "Oh, he's the originator of modern techno...the standard others try to reach". I was left flat by him. I'm just glad there's much better out there.
I also agree that Lo Fidelity Allstars are weak after Blown Mind, and a good portion of Blown Mind itself is forgettable even. The rest of electronica and techno I've heard (pretty much everything people have recommended to me in the past six months) just doesn't match what I'm looking for. I'm cursed with being too finicky and selective. :)

Paul Oakenfold probably is the originator of modern techno, for that he should be taken out and shot.:D

Amen. :)
A lot of my respect goes to Larry Fast. He created his electronica with 25+ year old technology compared to what we have now. Back when a computer would crowd a small room. Kraftwerk is great for the same reason.

Yes. Viva la pioneers!
Paul Oakenfold's just an ugly moose on Mount Kraftwerk, his genre's the rest of the herd. That style of techno will die out in due course. It's just a small insignificant part of electronica.
I've never heard of Larry Fast. I have heard of Larry Tee.....:)

Larry's a mountain lion. He'd rip a moose to shreds in 4 or 5 seconds.
Is it medication time again?

Here's (http://synergy-emusic.com/lfbio.html) the bio on Larry Fast. And here's (http://synergy-emusic.com/) his SYNERGY project web site. He didn't only help to pioneer the electronic music style, but he also invented several of the technologies used since the mid-70's to modern day. He started by building custom synthesizer modules for Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman, and worked with several early electronica bands. Then he embarked on his SYNERGY project, which is still ongoing (last album was in 2002).
I only have two Synergy albums, but I really want the whole collection (10 in all, I think). My recommendation for a first-purchase to anyone interested would be Games (1979), as this album has the first released instance of Larry's digital synthesis work. Give it a listen. (And here are some samples from Audion (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/recs/radio/krex/-/album/B000009CM9/ref=pd_krex_dp_a/002-5420452-4056842) (1981), too.)

a lot of boy-band music is based on electronic music. justin timberlake comes particularly to mind. he has a lot of watered-down electronic beats and things on his backing track.

But it's not electronica though.:D You can dress a boy-band up in whatever you like but as soon as the mouth opens.... it's in that sad genre alone.
What really irritates me is AMG still classes it as rock. Yeah right.

i'm just saying, that boy-band fans can't really criticise electronica, when it's the music that theirs rips off so much.

I must admit I am far much more into punk-rock-hard-core stuff, so I might be a bit offtopic and my electonica-favourites considered as shitty, but I'll give it a try:
