Deliberating on yours (the spreadsheet can wait).
Cylob
14th January 2004, 12:46
Is this the lot who were really big circa 94/95? The irritating band (with more members than Kool & the Gang)?
DJ Egg
14th January 2004, 12:51
Hmm.
afaik, they were never really big, but big enough I guess between '93 to 2000+
Still going, I think.
And still no hits...
Not sure about "irritating" though.
Awesome live!
Some excellent remix projects too.
You tell me...

Cylob
14th January 2004, 13:30
It beats bloody working.:D
Struggling at the first hurdle here.
Mr Jones
14th January 2004, 13:40
I'll edit my original clue to...
Basil Brush sounds like an old French Master
Two clues in there now...
DJ Egg
14th January 2004, 16:18
Recognize him/them . . .
Is it Boom Boom Lautrec? :p :D
Or, St. Sans Le Fox
Hmm... Reynard Matisse?
Nah. Umm, Vixen Debut C
lol
Another clue please . . .
Mr Jones
14th January 2004, 16:33
Ohhhh I couldn't possibly, you are so so so so close to the answer it's untrue...
Hmmmmm, ok, Basil Brush does a sheep impression but get's it wrong, so he sticks to doing sound a like French masters
Thats a song clue as well as an artist clue...
;D
Cylob
15th January 2004, 06:49
Next clue Jones...
I'm losing sleep!
DJ Egg
15th January 2004, 07:21
Me too...
I'm like a deer with no eyes and no legs...
Still no idea.
Va Va Voom? (Baa Baa Boom)
French master = artist/painter, yes?
Monet, Manet, Gaugin, Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Cezanne, Degas, Rodin, Rousseau...
I know I'm gonna kick myself...
'cos I definitely recognize the dude (not sure about the gal though).
Arrggghh :D
Mr Jones
15th January 2004, 07:28
Y'all so close, specially Egg, can't really give you any more clues as I'd probably give the game away, so might as well tell you..
Artist = Mettise ( that was the sounds like a French Master)
The Basil Brush reference was their big song from a couple of years back, Boom Boom Ba (the Ba bit being the sheep impression that didn't work :D)
Do I get another go for 'Foxing' you all :D
DJ Egg
15th January 2004, 07:35
Never heard of them (http://www.metissemusic.com/) :D
lol
Yeah, go for it Jonesy, your turn again.
Mr Jones
15th January 2004, 07:38
Ok, a leeeeetle bit easier...
The clue is in the file name, however, this group is usually a trio, but could I buggery find a decent group shot...
Cylob
15th January 2004, 08:41
But not alot easier....
Based on your clue, I'd say Port Talbot.:D
DJ Egg
15th January 2004, 09:12
Never heard of any of these either...
Atomic Lounge
Nuclear Kitchen
Uranium Quarter
next clue please :D
Mr Jones
15th January 2004, 09:18

Errrrr, famous for providing the music to a Levi advert
'nother name clue....
Benson & Hedges are available in towns and other larger living areas.
I fucking rule at this game when it comes to the obscure :D
Cylob
15th January 2004, 09:30

Cylob

5 x consecutive posts is highly illegal (right)?
How about we give the genre with the first clue. It narrows it down....
Genre - Dreampop
DJ Egg

The Swirlies
Cylob
15th January 2004, 13:10
Have you heard of them, or did you arrive via the clues?
DJ Egg
15th January 2004, 13:35
A bit of both ;)
Genres: Industrial | Elecronica | Post punk | Experimental
Here's an old pic of the original line-up from 1977
Mr Jones
15th January 2004, 13:46
And there was me thinking you didn't do obscure cylob :D
Cylob
15th January 2004, 14:09
If you give the genre it's alot less painful.:D
XTC?
DJ Egg
15th January 2004, 14:42
Nope
From Sheffield
'Time' relates to the first word of the band name.
The second part isn't exactly a word...
but you'd be very close with your guess.
Cylob
15th January 2004, 15:24
The only post-punk bands I know of (from Sheffield) are Cabaret Voltaire & New Model Army. I'm working on it...
Mr Jones
15th January 2004, 15:44
Clock DVA (http://home.btconnect.com/sheffieldvision/bands/clockdva.html), ask me another :D

NJK
15th January 2004, 16:03
alright you brits
this one is a little more difficult for you
dutch band>
DJ Egg
15th January 2004, 16:28
Well, if it's not Focus or Golden Earring, which it isn't, then I haven't got a clue. :D
NJK
15th January 2004, 17:09
first part of the bands name -is found in a Depeche mode song -
second part of the bands name is a genre in music and has nothing to do with the music they play!
DJ Egg
15th January 2004, 17:17
Living Blues?
NJK
15th January 2004, 18:30
nope but they do play blues music - that part is right dj egg-

Ok, I suppose it's my turn again then...
Genres: Electro-dark-wave | world | new age | industrial alt rock?
5 words
DJ Egg
16th January 2004, 04:09
Need another clue do we?
Of German origin at the core, though not all members...
The band name is a comparative phrase.
Here's my playlist (http://www.btinternet.com/~meggamusicweb/meggamusicweb1/Winamp_Playlist.html), if it'll help ;)
Cylob
16th January 2004, 05:51
The corporate phrase rules out Ozric Tentacles.:D I browsed your darkwave selection and could only find 'Floatation'. Which ain't 5 words....
DJ Egg
16th January 2004, 07:12
Corporate? Comparative!
...as in a comparison between one thing and another ;)
Hmm, what's the proper grammatical term for it?
Not a metaphor or simile... umm, dang! brainfart!
They're somewhere in the middle of the list, or just after...
I'm not 100% sure what the actual genre is.
I looked on a few sites and found what I typed above.
If anything, they've been compared to the likes of:
Dead Can Dance | Delerium | This Mortal Coil | Enigma | Afro Celt Sound System | Celt Arabia | & I've even seen them listed alongside Depeche Mode & Skinny Puppy.
Mr Jones

DJ Egg

hmm, just checked out some of the mp3 samples off the new album... no where near as good as their older stuff :(
Teignmouth | Mental Traveller | Oxeia
Those 3 albums are worth acquiring.

Egg will get this no danger....

Next...
Cylob
16th January 2004, 09:35
Killing Joke?
DJ Egg
16th January 2004, 15:45
Nope.
The clue is literal. One word only.
Genres: Industrial | Dark Ambient | Experimental | Electronica | Far Out & Freaky
Cylob
16th January 2004, 16:09
Coil.
Funny, I listened to Love's Secret Domain only last night. Windowpane is the only 'proper' song on it (the rest is just theatrics)....
Cylob
16th January 2004, 16:30
Next...
DJ Egg
16th January 2004, 18:50
No idea.
I hope their music is better than their dress sense ;)
Faultline?
Cylob
16th January 2004, 19:01
Their music's definitely better than the dress sense.:D
Clue 2 - derailment on a miniature scale.
Genre - Rock (a 50's flavour, not unlike the Von Bondies).
Off to the recommendations thread (where I bet any money zootm's plugged Dillinger Escape Plan).:D

Original punk band
I could only find this small thumbnail of the original 1978 line-up (there might even be a loose clue in there somewhere).
DJ Egg
17th January 2004, 12:54
Need another clue do we?
Well, small thumbnail was the loose clue from before, though it's not a thumb or a nail, if ya know what I mean...
Here's a pic of the band from 1997.
The only original member left is the singer/guitarist, 2nd on the right. You might recognise the guy on the left as the bass player from an even more famous band from the late 70's/early 80's...
Cylob
17th January 2004, 13:21
Stiff Little Fingers?
If so, I was thrown as they formed in '77. Hmmmmmmmm...
DJ Egg
17th January 2004, 13:56
Yup. Sure is.
I didn't say when they formed,
all I said was it was a picture of the original line-up from 1978,
ie. the picture was from 1978 ;)
Or at least, that was what I meant to say,
but I can see how anyone could easily be confused by my ambiguously worded statement, lol.
And of course, the current bass player is none other than Bruce Foxton of The Jam.
Cylob
17th January 2004, 14:06
If I knew a tenth of what you do about music I'd still be a genius...:D:D
Now, 'taking a ride' back to the 60's
DJ Egg
17th January 2004, 15:19
The Double Decker String Band?
lol :D
Nah, they look very familiar though...
I thought it could've been Peter Paul & Mary at first
(Leaving on a Jet Plane)
until I saw a few pictures of them...

For a minute I thought '80's psychedelia' was a joke, but man you're serious!
/trips and falls at the first hurdle (breaks two toes).
DJ Egg
18th January 2004, 01:32
Ok then...
Well, this was a supposedly secret side-project of a band that have already been mentioned recently in this thread, albeit as a wrong guess (by your good self, Cylob).
Said band started out as a punk outfit in circa 1977, but had a change of direction by 1979, taking a more new wave / alt pop-rock approach, and had a string of catchy hits (79 - 83 ish), still going afaik...
They recorded a couple of albums in the mid to late 80's under this more "psychedelic" guise...
You've got some trax in your playlist by them under their more popular name, but not any by this alter-ego.
hmm, kinda lordly and atmospheric (clue)
DJ Egg
18th January 2004, 05:30

Cylob
18th January 2004, 08:37
The Psychedelic Aerial Dukes?
Even discogs has let me down on this one....:(
DJ Egg
18th January 2004, 10:13
hehe :D
You're right with the last word, which is the second word of the band name.
Now, if you could just work out who they are when not using this guise, you'd get it straight away...
umm, just look back to when you were guessing for Clock DVA.
You gave a wrong answer. And that's who this lot are normally.
Cylob
18th January 2004, 10:23
The Dukes of Stratosphear.:)
Man, I had no idea this 'project' existed. No doubt it's good stuff......

Bananarama.
DJ Egg
18th January 2004, 17:12
It is a bit, seeing we've just been discussing their alter-ego side project,
The Dukes of Stratosphear...
and especially seeing the right click properties of the image says the filename is xtc.gif
Yeah, it's gotta be Bananarama.
Are we right?
:D
So, no-one knows mine then?
Hmm, I thought that one would be really easy.
Two words...
What you might do with a knife
and the direction you might do it in
marvinbarcelona
18th January 2004, 17:36
DJ Egg, thats cheating! But I'm sure you knew the band anyway.
Cylob
18th January 2004, 17:42
There are no bands on AMG with names like...
Forward Stab
Stab Forward
Forward Thrust
etc.
I am well-and-truly stumped. If I have some of their music I'll fall on my sword.:D
DJ Egg
18th January 2004, 17:46
Well, you're there with the Stab bit, but it just needs a few more letters on the end.
Word 2, think: Compass direction
@marvin
Yes, I knew it was XTC straight away. No, honest, I did! hehe
Cylob
18th January 2004, 17:49
Stabbing Westward.:)
But you did have to spell it out Egg....:D
\sits in a corner to read-up on Stabbing Westward
DJ Egg
18th January 2004, 17:55
Yup. We got there in the end, lol.
I guess their 2 most famous songs would be:
You Complete Me & Save Yourself
But they've made a fair few tasty tunes, imho.
Next!

Radical Dance Faction anywhere.
So, instead, it's back to 60's psychedelia again...
Give away clue: We're looking for the original name, not what they changed it to in the 70's and had a few hits with in the 80's.

Ooh, I do like Recoil, especially "Unsound Methods".
You sure we did them, or was that Coil?
Anyway, to the issue at hand...

Re: Kissing The Pink
Hehe, I used to know the singer, Josie.
She also sang for a band called Love & Destruction (late 80's, early 90's), which featured my mates Paul on percussion, Louie on bass, Sputnik (vox/bass) & Mick Reid (drums), the latter 2 who were also in Ship Of Fools and now Nine Invisibles. Heh, and Les from Cradle of Filth was the keyboard player in Ship of Fools. Small world eh ?!

Upping the tempo further then. These guys are so retro they wear authentic 80's clothing (complete with chunky Timex watch).:D

One last "electronica" outfit from me
(for the time being)
Usually a 3-piece who perform under their own right,
but even more famous as remixers
(2 out of 3 of every 12" seems to include one of their remixes)
Sorry, couldn't find a better pic...
DJ Egg
21st January 2004, 17:25
What? Not even a guess!
Ok, another pic, but only 2 of the 3
Can't seem to find a pick of all 3 remixers/producers/DJs together.
It's only one word we're looking for, and you already have the keyword.
Cylob
21st January 2004, 17:33
Still no good. AMG's a fat lot of help on this on.
I even looked up the word 'mongrel' in the oxford english for definitions.:D
DJ Egg
21st January 2004, 18:37
Well, you probably won't get it from looking up mongrel.
The nearest you'll get is 'mixed breed'
But if you look up the actual word, then 'mongrel' will be one of the definitions.
I guess 'mongrel' is more widely used to mean an inferior crossbreed, whereas this word is more widely used to mean a superior crossbreed.
But in some definitions, they both mean the same thing :weird: :igor:
Final clue: also the title of a Siouxsie track.
Oh, and they are listed on AMG

Next clue!
marvinbarcelona
23rd January 2004, 20:19
Clue 2 : A singer from the former colonies, but not the US.
The clues are a little cryptic, but its very, very difficult to think of ones that won't give the game immediately.
The next clue will be a little easier.
Cylob
23rd January 2004, 20:27
Nick Cave....
marvinbarcelona
23rd January 2004, 20:33
Damn! Its from the film "Ghosts of the Civil Dead".

2nd word - the bit of the meat you give to the dog.

 Told you it was an easy one :D
Damo Suzuki doesn't look Germanic though ;) :D
Cylob
25th January 2004, 08:25

I'm still trying to decide whether it's male or female :D
At least I gave a clue with my easy one, lol.
Looks very familiar... but it's those shades again which always make it tricky.
Cylob
25th January 2004, 15:34
A new easy one....:D
DJ Egg
25th January 2004, 16:25

DJ Egg

clue is in the name of the pic
DJ Egg
26th January 2004, 06:19
Doh! Spaceplay's reply wasn't here when I first started typing. lol
Word 1 = The Arctic creature enemy (not Mr Freeze, hehe)
Word 2 = Where you'd buy/drink the coffees
Word 3 = the collection of musicians involved
Their most famous piece, 'Perpetuum Mobile', has been used for a few tv adverts.
Hewlett Packard, Knorr Herb Cubes, and a couple of car adverts.
Infact, most of their music seems to get used for adverts or film soundtracks...
'Telephone & Rubber Band' for Mercury One 2 One advert
'Bean Fields' for Eurotunnel advert
You'll also recognize 'Music For Helicopters' and 'Numbers 1 to 4'.
etc etc.
yeah, a very interesting bunch, hehe :D
DJ Egg
26th January 2004, 06:24
Yeah, PCO
Buffalo Springfield
Cylob
26th January 2004, 11:33

DJ Egg
26th January 2004, 14:37
The two guys on the left in the Buffalo Springfield pic are Stephen Stills & Neil Young.
Hmm, it's possible that mine are just getting more and more obscure... well, to you maybe, but not for me, lol.
Let's see if you know who this is then...
The clue probably gives it away again, lol.
(yeah, definitely too easy, even without the clue methinks)
Cylob
26th January 2004, 16:15
Based on your clue - The KLF....
They certainly look demented enough to burn £1,000,000.:D
DJ Egg
26th January 2004, 18:27
yay!
Cylob
27th January 2004, 05:28

I recognise these two. What genre is it buz??? Electronic?
buz
27th January 2004, 14:47
No, don't worry, it just showed my clue was more cryptic than you thought! :p
Ok, the genre should make it much easier: trip hop.
Cylob
27th January 2004, 15:12
Mono?
buz
27th January 2004, 15:15
still not that!
I'll precise a bit my clue: greek beginning.

DJ Egg
27th January 2004, 18:28
You've probably never heard of these (which is sad) but they're another of my all-time fave bands.
Formed around 1979, still going...
Genre: Electronica / Dub
Styles: Downtempo, Ambient Dub, Dub, World Fusion
3 words
Note: couldn't find a pic of all band members together, so ~half of them will have to do for now.... (there's a bass player, percussionists, b. vocalists, and maybe one or two others missing)
