Cylob

It figures! It must be nice though to work within music. Some of us go to office jobs.:( A tragedy really.

Word 1 = shining brightly, like a million...
Word 2 = small word, belonging to / from
Word 3 = sounds like '*** of the covenant' or even 'covenant of the ***', but with the extra letter, from the clue, at the end  :D

Suns of Arqa
BTW, what happened to the pic?
DJ Egg
27th January 2004, 19:33
umm, it was in the post (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?postid=1257349#post1257349) further up.

Elegy, requiem, funeral/death march?
DJ Egg
28th January 2004, 05:10
Hmm, could it be Dot Allison perhaps?
Missed one vital clue there, lol
. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
What's the Dirge connection?
Nothing to do with One Dove...
Hmm, was she vocalist on Death in Vegas' "Dirge"?
Yeah, think she was, iirc :)
Cylob

He he! Mr cryptic strikes!

buz
28th January 2004, 19:12
I'd say something like, er, Television maybe?
DJ Egg
28th January 2004, 19:15
Hmm, maybe it wasn't as easy as I thought :weird:
New York (pre) punk pioneers ('73-'78)
One word, as given by the clue in the image filename, and in the pic itself.

DJ Egg

Ok, to help you guys, this is the lead singer, and he's a Kid Loco pal...
DJ Egg
29th January 2004, 00:00
Nah. You've got me there buz.
Should it be 'plain' or 'plane' (as in aeroplane) ?
A few wrong guesses, just to get another clue...
Air | Terminal | Chateau Flight | Broadcast ?????
buz
29th January 2004, 00:12
oh! my bad... it should be 'before the plane'!!! :o
so the band name is two words which correspond to a place you can find in an airport...
DJ Egg
29th January 2004, 00:17
Departure Lounge? (Tim Keegan)
Hmm, if I'm not mistaken, Kid Loco is their producer... yes?
buz
29th January 2004, 00:21
that's it! :up::up:
kid Loco produced their album Too late to die young and Tim Keegan sang on the last Kid Loco album (Kill your darlings).

A more recent picture (from 1996) of this set of tripped out 70's spaceheads . . . missing two key members from those days (world famous guitarist/producer & his keyboard/synth playing wife) who went on to form their own spaceage techno outfit, hehe.
Should be a pretty easy one . . . again.
Though I think I'll make my next one really tough...
Cylob
29th January 2004, 06:13
Could it possibly be.......... GONG?
Cylob

It must be The Clash.......
DJ Egg
1st February 2004, 13:34
lol :D
The Clash didn't do Babylon's Burning!
And that guy looks nothing like Joe Strummer (R.I.P.)
(/me checks again... well, maybe slightly similar, hehe).
Grooves... or 'furrows' to be more precise.
Don't get stuck in one.

DJ Egg
2nd February 2004, 20:42
Nope. No connection with Supertramp whatsoever.
Big Softie is the only real clue I can give you.
2 words
umm, fee-fi-fo-thumb...
DJ Egg
2nd February 2004, 22:07
The 'fee-fi-fo-thumb' clue is for the 2nd word of the band name.
For those who don't know it, it's the words spoken by a certain character from
Jack and the Beanstalk... :igor:
...but in this case, he'd say it much more softly (clue for 1st word)
Cylob

DJ Egg

A geography teacher, a history teacher, definitely a physics teacher in there somewhere.
Nice!
DJ Egg
3rd February 2004, 07:46
Yeah, lol :D
So it was The Diodes then?
ok, a slightly less obscure and better known UK "electric punk band", who's first album DEFINITELY was one of the finest punk albums ever! (1977)
Cylob
3rd February 2004, 08:23
Buzzcocks?
DJ Egg
3rd February 2004, 08:25

DJ Egg
4th February 2004, 17:59
hehe :D
This is what AMG has to say:
Genres: Rock
Styles: Alternative Metal, Speed Metal, Heavy Metal
New Jersey-based Latin metal sextet...Most of its members are of South American descent, resulting in a type of music that combines crunchy heavy metal with Latin rhythms and lyrics that alternate between English and Spanish..."The idea is to be as heavy as possible and as melodic as possible -- with a Latin twist"...The new group enjoyed exposure via the New York metal college radio station WSOU and began to gig heavily, opening for the likes of Kittie, Soulfly, Snapcase, plus a co-headlining set at the March Metal Meltdown festival in New Jersey. Soon after, the sextet signed to Roadrunner Records...in July of 2001.
Re: clues
'Sick' is an other word/definition for the first word.
The second word is of Latin/Spanish origin.
The whole thing is kind of a pun on this 'tropical pacific anomaly' thing. Or to quote the first result from a google search...
"a disruption of the ocean-atmosphere system in the Tropical Pacific having important consequences for weather and climate around the globe"
Love this band, btw.

Cylob
5th February 2004, 16:26
Now you come to mention it, it does say 'CRASS' in the Union Jack.:D But I didn't notice it there! The anarchy sign was the give away for me.

@spaceplay
New Musik... hmm, Nick Straker was one of the band members, yes? ("A Walk in the Park"). Those were the dudes who did "Living By Numbers". I remember that little ditty. Not bad, but not really my scene...
Also, I liked some of OMD's early stuff before they were famous (Electricity, etc), but not much after that. Alas, I've never been a great lover of 'pop' music. But I'll check out some Camouflage nevertheless. I'll start with 'Bodega Bohemia' and 'Spice Crackers', and let you know...

Got you a bit stumped?
Yeah, a very cryptic clue, lol.
There's 3 first names there, so we're looking for 3 surnames
(ie. the asterisk represents the missing surname).
Hmm... the first one may have been famous only in the UK though, not sure.
So, to make it a bit easier....
The + Alice * + Shirley * + Santa * = ?
AMG says:
Genres: Rock

The first surname (which forms the second word of the band name) is shared by the following famous people:
Gary (veteran actor) | Alice (rockstar) | Henry (boxer) | Tommy (comedian) :igor:
There's not many famous Shirley's, and it isn't MacLaine...
And there's only one famous Santa ;)

I'm back from college... Sorry I made you guys wait for so long :)
Since no one has a clue as to who the artist is, I'll give you two clues:
1. He has been mentioned in this forum before (No, not in the 'Band Name Game' or the 'Song Listening to' threads ;):D)
2. He's from the British Isles, but not from England ;)
@DJEgg - No, 'click' doesn't have anything to do with the Artist's name. Sorry if that puzzled you a bit :)

like the one you posted just yet.
DJ Egg
13th February 2004, 07:55
Oh, ok then :)
Hmm, everyone should know this band.
Ok, they've not had any national chart hits, but most of the best bands in the last 10 to 15 years haven't either. It's a crying shame, but such is life...
I'm pretty sure the ones I've posted are a lot less obscure than some of the ones others have posted ;)
Ok... to further the clue:
"Continental Stars"
Or to be more precise...
"Starry continent" (one word).
This band were formed in the mid/late 80's, mainly as a live/festival band, though their first official release wasn't until 1991. With 10 albums under their belt, they are still going strong today.
They are probably more famous for doing remixes of/for the likes of:
Beautiful People, Porcupine Tree, Gary Numan, Hawkwind, Suns of Arqa, Switchblade Symphony, A Flock of Seagulls, The Sweet, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Gong, and many many others.
The 2 male members were in another band in the early to late 80's before this one. Think psilocybin, or the growth which this drug is obtained from.
If there was any true justice in the (musical) world, like there was in the 60's to mid 80's, then this band would've probably had 20 top ten hits by now :/
DJ Egg

Another of my all-time fave bands :)
DJ'ed for them a couple of times back in the mid 90's, yay!
For some top cultured ambient/spacey/trancey/dubby tripped-out electronica,
I recommend you start with the "Whatever Happened to Utopia" album (1994),
then move on to "Axis Mundi" (1995) and "White Bird" (1998, and probably their most "commercial" sounding album).
Note, some of their other material (especially 12") is more "full on".
On the other hand, MMB were more traditional space rock style. And totally mad.

By the way, there was no clue...
though they did play at Woodstock.
And apart from the fact that everyone should really recognize this world famous guitarist, and the percussion/congas should be a dead giveaway, and the fact that half the band name appears on the backdrop just above the guitarist's left shoulder (well, his left, our right). It doesn't say "free 'suntans' here". ;) :D
One word
One of the biggest bands of all time (1966-2004)

DJ Egg
14th February 2004, 17:22
Huh? omg  :D
You've not seen Woodstock before then?
Santana (http://www.rockonthenet.com/artists-s/santana.htm) are a rock band, or they were (late 60's / 70's / 80's).
Latin flavored, monster percussion, mammoth guitar solos, etc.
Start with Soul Sacrifice (studio and/or live (http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Michael_Shrieve.html) version)
with Michael Shrieve's "legendary drum solo".
Recommended albums (all gold/platinum!):
Santana 1 | 2 (Abraxas) | 3 ('69-'71)
Caravanserai ('72) | Borboletta ('74) (Mirage = top track) | Moonflower (live '77)
Santana hits (70's):
She's Not There, Black Magic Woman, Oye como va, No-One To Depend On (I Ain't Got Nobody), etc etc.
Sure, some of their tunes are a bit crappy. But when they're good they're excellent. Definitely worth a listen anyway, lol.
I guess you had to "be there" at the time to really appreciate it, hehe.
Their newer stuff is waaay too commercial, smooth & jazzy for my liking, eg. Supernatural album (1999), though it did win a Grammy award.
I honestly (wrongly) assumed that everyone knew Santana.
Strange world we live in, lol.
Cylob
15th February 2004, 08:19

you got it right- I read the bio of tasmin archer and posted the pic - in her bio ( book in library) it was written she wrote sleeping satelite during 1989 - so my mistake i took it to be a 80's song- released however in 1993- ( one always should read beyond the first two pages of a book)

Skint being the label.
A Lo-Fi band (supposedly).
Genre: Funky Breaks

19th February 2004, 06:00
Hmm... I was thinking along those lines originally. Doh!
Was actually going to ask you if by "Skint" you were referring to the label, or a clue to the band name.
I even looked on the Skint (http://www.skint.net/main.htm) site, but knew for sure that it was none of the artists listed on the left . . . then again, Indian Ropeman isn't listed either. Ooh, love that Elephant Sound CD. Aah, it's listed under "Other Artists". Phew, heh.
Based on the last clue, although they used to be on Skint but are now on Sony,
it must be the
Lo Fidelity Allstars
...and the only thing lo-fi about them is the name, I guess. 'Big beat', if anything ?!
Dang. Should've got it straight away.
I've even met them a few times before.
But I seem to remember them looking more like this (http://www.mtv.com/shared/media/images/artist/l/lo_fidelity_allstars/az_official/376x180.jpg)
