Cylob
14th August 2003, 16:00
Hehe! The Inspiral Carpets are officially the ugliest band that ever lived. I'd have to stand at the back.

Cylob

Bollox!!! Perhaps it'll come to me after half a bottle of scotch. I recognise that face. We must be talking early 90's.

Mr Jones
14th August 2003, 17:32
Formed '88, recorded throught most of the '90's, not sure if they are still in one piece or not...

Would you like an easier one..

The Chrome Cranks??? WTF???

No fair zootm, the guitarist's face is obscured.

zootm
15th August 2003, 10:54
that's the bassist. and if his face wasn't obscured it might be a bit too easy.

Easy one for cylob...

Cylob
15th August 2003, 12:01
Ah, cheers Jones, very considerate of you! Raunchy pic of Toni (I recogonise that bone structure anywhere). She's looking very submissive, I must dwell on that thought for a while.

Life's simple pleasures. :)

Mr Jones

Hoorah! Incidentally Jones, I've checked out Ms Lydia Lunch. Not bad. A good remdition of Don't Fear the Reaper with Foetus.

Mr Jones
19th August 2003, 15:28
heh, where did you think I was pulling the wacky names from, both Lydia and Chrome Cranks are associated with Foetus, Lydia in the song you mentioned and a few others, Chrome Cranks did a EP with them, two tracks by Foetus, and two by them.

Ok, my turn ...

Image edited to prevent the obvious giveaway,...

Cylob
19th August 2003, 16:33
Stumped again man! Cool drummer, cool guitarist. Are you sure the obvious giveaway is that obvious? Is it Bob the Builder's band?

Mr Jones
19th August 2003, 20:27
Unless you think that bands name scrawled accross the front of the drum isn't obvious, then I guess not :D

80's underground eh - that's why I'm struggling. I was a new waver in the 80's, hell I even liked Spandau Ballet!

Mr Jones
20th August 2003, 09:21
They actually go as far back as 1976....

Put you out of your misery, it's The Cramps :D, gotta admit I cheated a little bit there, the lead singer, Lux Interior, isn't in the picture, but you should have got it from the guitar player , Poison Ivy...

Check out the latest album, Fiends of Dope Island

Cylob
20th August 2003, 09:38
Damn!!!! I thought it was the Cramps (even looked at their page on AMG). The missing members threw it, I thought it was a weird two-some. Thanks for the recommendation.

Cylob

@sidd: The guy with his hand out (if that's the one you're referring to) is George Clinton, Grand Funkmaster Extraordinaire (as I think of him), of Parliament and Funkadelic fame, among many, many other contributions to the genre. ;)

Here's another. (...and Cylob, to answer your question before you ask it... No, it's not Alanis Morissette. )

She's just formed this band (in addition to the solo career)

@ScorLibran
gonna tell us who guess4.gif is?
or a clue maybe?
(I take it my guess at Alvin Lee was wrong?)

ScorLibran
5th January 2004, 08:46
Sorry DJ Egg, guess4.jpg is not Alvin Lee. It's the bassist/singer/songwriter of the band I have more tracks than any other of on my hard drive. 183, to be exact. Use the link in my sig, "Lossless Album Collection", and start counting. :D (Don't worry, it'll be obvious.)

Or for anyone who knows what I like, saying the band is my favorite-of-all should give it away. :)

Doh! Should've got that.
Not to mention that I didn't even notice it was a bass

though the pic is a bit dark (lame excuse).

Captain Sensible? Pull the other one :p :D
Tho' I did quite like The Damned between 1976 to '80-ish
But 'Happy Talk' was a shameful act, and enough to put me off the geezer for life.

lol :D

Big clue. Think: husband of previous (he wearing the shades), ie. the pic of the artist directly prior to my post (read: artist=artitht / post=potht) :D

Guitar = main man = husband / he of the shades
Drummer = former Yes drummer
Bassist = played with Peter Gabriel band, plus sessioned for many many others
Lead singer/Rhythm guitarist = played with Zappa, Bowie, Talking Heads, Eno + more
Not entirely sure who the other 2 guys in the pic are, probably session dudes...

Band started out in 1968/9-ish, but the line-up in the pic is from the 80's reincarnation, where only the 'main man' is the original remaining member

Robert "Frippertronic" Fripp (aka: Mr. Toyah Wilcox)
Bill Bruford
Tony Levin
Adrian Belew

Past members:
John Wetton (Family, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, UK, Asia)
Greg Lake (ELP)
Mel Collins (played sax/flute/clarinet for just about every band going in the 70's/80's, including Camel, Dire Straits, Clannad, Floyd/Waters, etc etc)
Boz Burrell (Bad Company)
etc etc

Now I know all you audiophiles have heard of all these musicians, yes? :p ;)

NJK

marvinbarcelona
6th January 2004, 21:22
Is it - Tooth, Hair, Tan and Whig? Classic prog rock group.

DJ Egg
7th January 2004, 02:29
bleh, ELP

I'm shocked and outraged :p ;)

Ok, Keith Emerson was always surrounded by keyboards
but not the whole band
ie. Greg Lake played bass and Carl Palmer was always surrounded by 20 drum kits :D

Nah, this lot were the grandfathers of all modern electronic music (ok, not including the likes of Stockhausen) and are still going strong today, though only the guy at the back in the pic is still in the band.

The dude on the left was only a brief band member, on one tour in 1975,
the guy in the middle was there from 1969 to 1986
and the main man with the bad hair problem, from 1968 to 2004+

Where ELP were ok, this lot were/are awesome!

I honestly thought the keyboards/synths were a major clue,
not to mention the filename. :D

hmm, spaceplay's pic . . .

I recognize them, but dang me if I can name them.
Give us a clue :p

lol @ marvin's Tooth, Hair, Tan and Whig :D

NJK
7th January 2004, 04:44
@egg in light of your clue -= kraftwerk.

about mine they played in a major city in germany and named the album likewise

Cylob
7th January 2004, 05:37
Yours is the well-known band Dusseldorf.

DJ Egg
7th January 2004, 07:25
Kraftwerk? Nah. That was the very first pic/band in the thread.
No repeats here.

Oh c'mon guys, ffs :p :D

Nah, Kraftwerk came a couple of years after this band
and didn't really start to properly influence the electronic music scene until about 71/72.

Well, you've all heard of this band, very famous, album/soundtrack-wise
(like 100's of them)

Fruit-colored vision

So spaceplay, is it really La Dusseldorf?
As in the Krautrock band from the mid 70's to early 80's.
Not heavily familiar with their stuff,
though more familiar with Neu! (Klaus Dinger being the connection).
Funnily enough, Klaus Dinger also played on Kraftwerk's first album.
Hmm, so did Michael Rother (Neu!). Was he also in La Dusseldorf?

I know two of their tracks, Silver Cloud & Rheinita
and I think I've got a couple of albums on tape somewhere.
Heh, my monster cassette collection's been boxed up for 2+ years.

Hmm, but your clue says that this band just 'played in a major city in Germany and named the album likewise', which doesn't suggest that the band are actually named after a German city . . . or does it? lol :igor:

Basically, I wasn't asking for a cryptic clue. :D
(although, that's what I've ended up doing above, to make it too damn obvious).

But yeah, their first album was also called La Dusseldorf, so, umm, yeah.

Can't find any pictures on the net similar to the one you posted though....
Can't even find an official website.

@Egg - Tangerine Dream

I knew it all along, I was just milking it.:D

Incidentally, this thread's steering a prog-rock course. I have some such bands.:p

DJ Egg
7th January 2004, 08:05
Hmm, unless it's all Cylob's fault :p
and it's actually...

Barclay James Harvest

and you were referring to their "Berlin - A Concert For The People" album

DJ Egg
7th January 2004, 08:18
Yeah Cylob yeah, lol :D

But was everyone else just "milking it" as well? ;)

Tangerine Dream (http://www.tangerinedream.org)

I've just been listening to their latest stuff
(which incidentally starts autoplaying as soon as the page opens).
Not as good as some of their earlier stuff, but still pretty damn hefty.

As for your pic, hmm, they look very glam
and again, I recognize the faces, and that beard
but alas, no name . . . just yet.
Give me a while and I might get it.

Actually, I think it'd be good if we also provided a clue with each pic.
eg. the first clue should be pretty tough/obscure
and get progressively easier/more revealing with each wrong guess.

yay/nay/maybe?

Cylob
7th January 2004, 09:04
yay! to that.

Tangerine Dream are on my 'discographies to-do' list. However, 'seer informs me they've done like..... shitloads of albums.:cry:

A clue with my pic..... the futuristic artwork on their albums is done by Rodney Matthews.

NJK
7th January 2004, 09:49
the rodney matthews part gave it away

a freebee - the band is magnum

right or not??

well here is another one from me

Cylob
7th January 2004, 10:06
Correct old fruit.:)

BTW, where is your clue?? Read 3 posts up, last paragraph...

NJK
7th January 2004, 10:13
alright - read half the post egg made

no questions asked

Cylob
7th January 2004, 10:53
This will sound really daft, but how are you people attaching pics? What's the code?

NJK
7th January 2004, 10:58
no code use the post a reply button and scroll down there should be something like a box and a button behind it to search your system for files to make the attachment
( don't use the quick reply box)

DJ Egg
7th January 2004, 11:10
So, I was right with Barclay James Harvest then?
Knew it couldn't be La Dusseldorf, lol.

and is "no questions asked" your clue?

Man, he's wearing shades . . .
hmmm . . . it looks like McGuyver, the dude from Stargate :D

*cough* next clue please

NJK
7th January 2004, 11:16
yes dj egg "no questions asked" is indeed the clue

and yes you were right on the barclay part.

DJ Egg

Cylob
7th January 2004, 12:33
Yes, another clue!!! You should've called the jpeg something cryptic...

The office concensus is he's a bass player.:D I know, ridiculous.

NJK
7th January 2004, 13:39
the question not to ask has to do with religion and is his most known hit single

NJK
7th January 2004, 19:53
oh come on guys it isn't that difficult - taken in account there is a rumour about the band!!!!!

ScorLibran
7th January 2004, 20:03
I have no idea who that is in spaceplay's pic. And I'll kick myself if it's someone I should know. ;)

Here's one that should be pretty easy...

Communique #137 from the Ministry of Standards.

The Ministry has noticed a dangerous amount of hairy faces in this thread. As a result, this thread is ordered to cease posting images of men with longer than regulation moustaches and hair must be no longer than shoulder length.

Thank you for your co-operation.

End of communique.

DJ Egg

Yeah spaceplay, the 'rumour' clue gave it away.
It's a more recent picture though. I always remember him with a bit more hair than that. Still think it looks more like Richard Dean Anderson (http://rdanderson.com/stargate/capture1/12blod10.jpg). :D

unless someone else knows . . . new clue please!

Cylob
8th January 2004, 05:48
Is it dEUS?

They're the only Belgian band I can think of.... Apart from....

Soulwax

But it must be the former

Mr Jones
8th January 2004, 08:12
The only Belgian band springing to mind is Front 242, didn't they have a slap head lead singer, can't recall that there were that many of them however....

hint: from a musical family

DJ Egg
10th January 2004, 11:25
Sean Lennon, at a guess

Though, still no nearer to getting spaceplays's guess4.jpg yet

Oh, for sure, I recognize them, and I'll probably kick myself when I find out... but can we have a new clue please, something a little less cryptic perhaps, but not too obvious.

(eg. I wasn't sure if the clue you gave was related to the band name, a band member, an album, a song, or something else).

DJ Egg
10th January 2004, 12:00
In the meantime, here's a fairly easy one . . .

The band name clue is in the filename

NJK
10th January 2004, 12:11
sky-0-fall- leads to another-

DJ Egg
12th January 2004, 02:47
Eh?
"Follow the yellow brick road" and "feeler"... and still no-one's got it?

Come on . . . surely not! ;)

Maybe Nick missed my post or something?

Clue #1 is kinda connected with the first word of the band name,
and clue #2 with the second word.

Think instrumental.

Cylob
12th January 2004, 05:41
The Ozric Tentacles?

DJ Egg
12th January 2004, 07:40

Note: There's no "The" in the official name though.
Got any of their music, Cylob?

Your turn.

12th January 2004, 07:43
by the time I read your first clue Cylob already posted the name . but I think that somewhere upstairs there might be an album or two in one or another box????

Cylob
12th January 2004, 08:09
Ozric Tentacles... (check my playlist, it's in alphabetical order).:D

I have:
1995 - Tantric Obstacles
1997 - Curious Corn
2000 - The Hidden Step

Genre - Space Rock (for argument's sake I class them as prog-rock). Now, must find a pic.... Have fishing rod, off googling.:)

Waterfall Cities (1999)

They're my 3 personal faves, I think...

Cylob

A jungle / drum & bass DJ/producer/artist?
Or the new tarzan?

Mr Jones
14th January 2004, 08:14
Egg, your close with the jungle thing, I'll give you another clue...

One of his more famous tunes was also the name film that featured the famous line
"Everybody be cool! This is a robbery!"

DJ Egg
14th January 2004, 08:29
Hmm . . .

Pulp Fiction, yes?

uuhh, surely not Kool & The Gang - Jungle Boogie?
(from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack)

hehe

umm, Metalheadz man -> Alex Reece?
hmm, or was that called "Pulp Friction"?

Mr Jones
14th January 2004, 08:40
Yeah, Alex Reece, one time up and coming jungle superstar, it was originally called Pulp Fiction as you point out, then after a very public bust up with Metalheadz he rejigged the tune and released it as Pulp Friction

/wasn't Jungle Boogie from Resevoir dogs?, my QT soundtracks are a little fuzzy

DJ Egg
14th January 2004, 08:59
cool.

Here's a new one.
First clue is in the filename
(we're looking for the 'band' name, not individual)

Hmm, that's 2 clues, doh!

DJ Egg
14th January 2004, 11:03
No guesses? Need another clue?

Ok. The dude in the pic is an intrepid DJ
And the band name? Stay alive at the roullette wheel... or don't as the case may be.

Cylob
14th January 2004, 11:17
Well, my favourite musician (not) is Elvis, who died in Graceland.

So, is it DJ Graceland.:D

The gamble on life clue has gone totally over my head...

DJ Egg
14th January 2004, 11:19
I've edited my post... because it wasn't a 'literal' clue.
Possibly too cryptic.

It has to do with what the band used to be called,
and what they changed the name to after a dispute...
so you were on the right tracks.

Cylob
14th January 2004, 11:20
