The remdition of 2112 on 'Exit Stage Left' is also very good. Played with much zest. I have a soft spot for Caress of Steel, Hemispheres & Permanent Waves. The solo on 'Freewill' is that good I once owned a 'Freewill Cassette' (8 remditions of the song on each side).
I haven't listened to any 70's Rush in months (a real tragedy). I can soon put that right!

there isn't one. the one on "different stages", and the one on "all the world's a stage" are both spectacular, though. :)
fun rush-related quote:
"After reading Shakespeare's 'All the world is a stage' line, I was amazed at his genius. Not only could he write classics of literature, he could build a time machine and buy Rush albums."
i'm not sure who said that, though.

The album..."Kick Out The Jams" released in 1969.
Actually they were considered the original "punk rock" band.
So for heavy metal, lets go back to:

the battle for LA was far superior, in my opinion. showed off the band's uniqueness and talents better, had better lyrics, and was just generally a better listen. you're welcome to agree, though.

Gee..thanks for leaving me with such a broad selection of choices :) The Battle for LA was good, one of my favorite albums, but you have to give them credit, that was their first album. :)

I'll have to inject a little hair metal into this thread:

Don't be put off by Def Leppard's 90's crap. Their 80's material rocked, High N Dry in particular.

Hey!! I was going to mention Slayer as they have been completely overlooked here thus far (which would have been a horrible tragidy if they had of been overlooked through the whole thread). I realized they had so many because I own all of them :p, except for 'Haunting the Chapel' and 'Live Undead'.
Oh and by the way: Rush, Def Leppard and Guns n' Roses AREN'T METAL. In fact Def Leppard making this list simply horrifys me.
My Editions to the list:
Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia:

buy this album:

SikTh - 'The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out Wait For Something Wild'
it's unbelievably complex and good metal. well, i like it, anyway. not traditional metal, really, but loud guitary music, anyway...

Chaos AD is the best one, fact fans :) - followed by roots.
i take it you're not counting all the albums they released after max left?
here's another one that may get noticed if there's any british metal fans in here:
http://www.et9evo.iofm.net/site/logos/offkiltercover.gif
earthtone9 - off kilter enhancement
and what's this? free earthtone9 mp3s (http://www.et9evo.iofm.net/site/download.htm) on the official site? go educate yourselves, fools! (start with "tat twam asi", that should lead you in, lol).

Sepultura's albums after Max left don't count  Sorry, but without that voice, they're nothing.
And I agree, Chaos A.D., then Roots. Both amazing albums.
Y'know, I'm not a big Slayer fan, but I gotta admit no metal collection is complete without at least one of their albums.

I haven't heard any Slayer or Sepultura. If I was still in my teen's I'd probably check them out. I was big on Magnum, also a bit of the old Saxon.

@idiot: Good call on the SOAD . . . not sure about the rest though. I was into that new-fangled metal for a while, but it just isn't the same . . .

i liked the first two korn albums, but it kinda went downhill from there. "follow the leader" was alright - as for issues, just rubbish. it was very, very poor.
i didn't mind the first linkin park album either (to my eternal shame >_<) - there was some good songs on it, "with you" in particular stands out. meteora never really held my attention long enough for me to get a proper listen.
