How did your parents view your music?

My parents suffered tremendously, the stereo was always on during my waking hours. Madchester's finest filled the air.

It was Jesus Jones, 808 State, Pop Will Eat Itself, Curve, The Cure, Prinal Scream, Pixies, Jesus & Mary Chain, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, The Wonder Stuff, Happy Mondays, The Charlatans, New Fast Automatic Daffodils, Saint Etienne, Ride, Lush etc etc etc..... at a reasonable volume.

My dad's notion of good music was Diana Ross, my mum's Abba & the Bay City Rollers. I don't care if I never hear another Motown or Abba track again!!!!!!

My parents hate all the music I listen to and always will do. They don't like some of my bands coz they swear in them although they dont say anything you can always tell by the look in their eye.
Eminem and Linkin Park they dont understand, even the lightest Metallica song I could find they didn't like.
They dont even like Evanescence. I wont mention the rest theres to mnay :p
Parents always hate teenagers music they just like the boring old stuf they liked, its annoying to be constantly told to turn it down, and when they do it themselves you can hardly hear it. :weird:
My conclusion parents make no sence, and never like the younger genertaions music.

I always said to myself I'm hip enough to keep liking new music, whatever my age. I'm 32 and I already despise nu-metal. Is it because it's teen-music, or is it because the music itself is trash??? I swear it's the latter, but there may be some of the former in the equation as well.

I know one thing, I will always love well written tracks.

Don't worry Cylob, nu-metal is mostly trash, at least IMO.

I don't think my parents hated my music, they had to put up with a bunch of alternative rock at the time too. they're pretty hip and they even dig some of my trance/techno stuff that I share with them now. Pretty cool for being almost in their 60s.

I do recall my mom was not happy when she heard 'bad habit' by the Offspring, "Stupid-dumb-shit-god-damn-motherfucker!" was a little too much for her I think. ;)

my parents were pretty cool to whatever i was listening to. although they didn't "get" some of music (like the Cure) the folks didn't censor what i wanted to listen to. but i do have to say that they didn't like some of the rap, a little too "rough" for them. the folks were all for musical rebelion, they grew up during the growing pains of rock 'n' roll :D

When i was a wee boy, and started bringing home music from school, my parents freaked out and wanted to listen to it, to make sure it wasn't satanic and shit like that. But the funny thing was, they never ended up listening to it, they just bitched about it.

And now they've stopped bitchin' and respect my tastes in music, even though they don't like it. Of course now, when they come around, i just plug the headphones, so they don't have to listen.

Reminds me of the Judas Priest lawsuits! What is Johnny listening to up there, I do hope it's not devil worship. You'd think satan himself was in the bedroom. As a parent, I'd pretend to be keen on their music and listen to it that way. You'd be sampling rather than censoring. I'm pretty much liberal though, and I'll still be playing louder music at 50 than any teen can muster. Bring it on junior would be my attitude (I'll have the more expensive gear).

My mom? Doesn't mind, since she doesn't say anything... :D

Of course, alone in my own house, I can do whatever I want and not have to worry even if they like it or not... :D

My parents are really cool when it comes to stuff like this, so i can pretty much listen to whatever i want. That said, the stuff i listen too is hardly "satanic". The only band i listen too that has my dad turning down the car stereo is Nine Inch Nails. Its not the content, but the grating effects that he finds annoying. Other than that, i doubt he'll ever have a problem with Radiohead and Oasis. Also, i've never played RATM in front of him, he might not take kindly to that.:)

Anytime I turn on my techno music my parents start yelling at me. It is the same thing everyday, they just say I shouldn't listen to it because it is brainwashing me. It is the funniest thing, I got my mom to listen to some Trance Opera one day, and within a week she goes online and downloads tons of their songs. It just doesn't make any sense.

My parents always liked my choice of music- neither of them were very into classical to begin with, but it sounded cultured so they were not concerned.

However, my IDIOT brother's gangsta rap / heavy metal was and continues to be the source of much arguments and screaming. Such utter noisy drivel those genres are. :rolleyes:

If any of my kids start playing Beethoven my initial reaction would be 'shit, we've raised a geek'!

Basically, my parents hated anything I played if it included guitar and/or drums. Given that I used to lock myself into my room to pump up the volume, I generally got flabbergasted looks, banging on the door as well as the usual "This music is so unlike you" (which I still get from everyone when playing my AMB cds :D ;)

When my half-brother lived with my dad, he was always listening to techno. Whenever I was there, it just drove both of us nuts...I never really had a reason to hate techno until then...

My parents just say its all music. I'll listen to Country, or Pop music when I'm driving with them. But when I'm driving with or without my friends, I'm listening to Alternative Rock.

My dad says its all a bunch of loud intstruments and you can't hear the lyrics. Yeah, I can understand the lyrics, its not that hard to pick them up. But I like it. Also I have varying tunes, and with my limited amount of money I can't buy the music that I want, and impossible find all the music that I probably would like.

my 'rents are cool with the music I like, Hell I have gotten my father to like techno. But it could also be I like some classic stuff from when they where in their youth (zepplin, pink floyd, hendrex ect.).
Well my musical tast is very, very diverse. Right now I am downloading some classical (HA! RIAA, its in the public domain, ITS LEAGAL!). I listen to a collage station that plays just about anything and everything. I like just about anything, but I have my limits on rap, country and pop.
Well, at least I think they like the stuff.... My mother, she, IDK... maybe she is wanting to kill herself when I play some stuff like techno or whatnot. I am not too sure, but now I will just stop playing some music around them unless its classic rock.

I listen to techno, house, dance, trance, euro and a little freestlye, and my dad doesnt really like it but he tolerates it and my mom likes most of it.

I suppose I'm lucky.
I really didn't get heavily into music until The Beatles started
the American Invasion in the 60's.
Before that I was playing the trumpet in the Orchestral Band in high school.
Of course my parents liked that type of music.
But when I started listening to The Beatles, and other groups that followed,
my parents were very supportive of that.
They never complained about what I was listening to.
My dad even went so far as to tell me I could let my hair grow long.
Soon afterward I dropped out of the high school band
and started playing the guitar.
They bought me my first guitar and said good luck.
Later I started a band of my own playing stuff like Hendrix,
Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge, Blue Cheer, Spirit, and so on.
My parents let us set up in my bedroom, which was in the basement,
and that's where we practiced every day.
They still never criticized me or my band members for the music we
were listening to and playing.
Sometimes they said it was too loud, but that's about it.
But they never questioned or discouraged me from anything I was into musically.

Now I'm a parent of a 24 year old daughter.
I've choosen to follow the courtesy my parents gave me in my choice of music,
and I've never said anything critical of what my daughter listens to,
and never tried to discourage her from anything she's been into musically.
Sometimes I said it's too loud, but that's about it.

I never got much criticism for the music I listened to, just that it was always "too loud".
Heh, I stil get that to this day from the old ball and cha . . . uh, I mean my wonderful wife.
I can identify a lot with papadoc's post here. Being 54 years old now, I came up thru the British Invasion and the San Fran Psychedelic music of the 60's and 70's.
I even had a phase with Ravi Shankar for a few months.
Now, all this was about as far from Lawrence Welk and Flatt & Scruggs as you could get (some of you will have to rely on Google for those).
As you can see, we were a very musically diverse family which I think helped in their acceptance of all this new stuff I was bringing in.
Even today, I tend to keep myself open to new music.

I'm currently drawn to Progressive Rock, Electronica and Techno although I wouldn't be able to discern "GOA" from "Club" from "gabber" from "house". Maybe it's because I used to play bass guitar that I feel drawn to the heavy emphasis on the rhythm sections.

I guess it's because of my parents willingness to accept different musics that I listened to that has contributed to my acceptance and liking the different musics that are now available.

My mother and father were with me on liking Nirvana and Soul Asylum ages ago. But then I started growing out of that, and got into SP, Radiohead, and Bright Eyes, and my parents just weren't having it. My mid to late teenage years were spent trying to find ways to listen to my music without mom coming in my room and bitching at me. Thank god for the invention of headphones.

Quite right. As parents don't understand the concept of MP3's they wouldn't have a clue what you're up to.
