Do they Work? Why or Why Not?
Discuss.
As for me I think they do not work. Every single movie I've seen that came from a video game has sucked. Movies Like Mario Bros, Tomb Raider, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter all have sucked. And all of the ones that WOULD be cool has never been made or was planned to be made but never came out.

Resident Evil was an ok film, i'd rate it top of the game -> movie conversions. hopefully its sequel RE:Apocalypse, will be much better though. apparently its going to be based around RE3 Nemesis.
yes, Tomb Raider was bad, and Cradle Of Life was absolute cows poo (in the nicest of terms). I didnt think they could do much worse than the first one, but somehow...

Video games are about imagination of play. You control the character and have them do what you want them to do in a game. Games are so random, when it's converted to a movie, it's usually hard to even come up with a good fixed plot and still come out looking like it was inspired by a game, which is usually impossible. I can't think of any examples of where this actually worked, but it's failed with most anything else. Tomb Raider and Resident Evil were ass movies, to me...I actually enjoyed Mortal Kombat though, but then again, I was a big-time fan of the fighting series back when it was very popular (The first MK game that appeared on the Sega Genesis up to about when MK:Trilogy released on the PS1, which included all the character and stages from MK I-III...) :)

I thought the original Mortal Kombat was pretty good (didn't really care much for the second one). Resident Evil was awesome, IMHO. Tomb Raider?... bleh. :p
Can't really think of any others right off hand at the moment.

Halflife movie would rock, but they would need to ensure they added to the plot, give Gordon a person to take with him...
