View Full Version : Why?

has everyone in the world become such voyeuristic assholes that they feel compelled to share very intimate and personal problems/events with people they "know" online?
for example, we've got threads about friends killing themselves, parents being in the hospital, etc etc.
what's the point? i know pity rocks, but do yourself and everyone else a favor and keep your sad stories to yourself. some things are just meant to be private.
it's almost like using the loss of someone close to you as a way to bump your post count up a notch or two.
and if your family isn't giving you the support you need, get a new fucking family. people on the internet are nothing as good as someone by your side. go adopt some ethiopians and move to kalamazoo, they will be your support.
seriously.

I'd have to agree with you on this liquidmotion.

because for some of us, this is the only place where we can truly be ourselves. Here we are not judged by how we look, how we talk, how well we do in school, what sports we do and don't do. Here we are known for a personalities. Here, some of us have truer friends than we have ever had in real life. Here we know there are people who have gone through the same things. Here we know we won't be ridiculed, or called an attention whore, we know we can turn to people here for support, no matter what.
liquidmotion
5th September 2003, 02:31
i judge most people by how well you talk (well, write, but same diff).
personality cannot be completely experienced by reading something like "Wh47z b3tt3r, W4FfLez or W1n4Mp 5?" -- this floods the forums each day.
maybe if you would leave the forums long enough to talk to someone outside of AIM or MSN, you'd realise that it isn't hard to make friends.
you only "know" people have gone through the "same things" because everyone else are attention whores, too.
go outside, dlinkwit27. go outside and have a brew, find a woman, and be happy.
dlinkwit27
5th September 2003, 02:37
been outside, its too bright
i don't drink (something I can't seem to get many people to admit to "in eral life")
I have a girlfriend, very happy, 9 months steady in a week or so.
I am happier here than I ever am "outside" here I can turn you off if I like. If that damn bananna gets on my nerves, I just put you on ignore. If I want a deep talk, I go to pabuk and talk to hester, and randman and the likes. If I want jokes and fun, I come here to talk about W4FfLez 4|\|d W1n4Mp 5. Everyone here is a real person, why should I not befriend them? Because I can't see their face?
So what if maybe they lie about things they have been through, people in real life don't? "Dude! Last Night I got SOOO wasted I ended up hev a three way with this pair of cheerleader twinds!" yea, very plausible, and even moerso, enriching.

Well, you said 'threads about parents being in the hospital' and that would be started by me but its not a pity story. I figured I would post it because its something good in a world so full of bad, and i don't know about other people, but I like to know what good/bad is going on in people's lives even if I only talk to then on the computer. Also liquid, you have been around long enough to understand that if you dont like the title of the thread your not forced to click it. If you see a thread "My friend died" or something to that extent and you don't like those thread's...dont click it! Your not a mod so you dont have to view the post's. I won't be surprised if someone post something along the lines of
"Why do we have so many new thread's where people bitch about other threads?"
Have a good day.
anubis2003

I don't particularly like those threads, but not really for the reasons you stated.
I think they are some of the better threads in these forums(well, GD) - they have an actual content, and a lot of the time people are looking for help(for example, white raven). When stuff that is real bad happens, people begin to feel unsafe to talk to people near them - they think they may also turn on them. These forums are a much easier way for them to get help - they have much less of a chance of being attacked by a forum member who lives on the opposite side of the globe than by a next door neighbor, for instance.

Here's an idea, how's about you don't read the threads? If you can't stand people posting stuff like that, just don't read it. It can't bother you if you don't read it. Besides, this is a PUBLIC forum, people will post what they feel is good enough to post (most of the time) wether or not you like it. I think it's rather comedic considering that you are bitching about the quality of threads in GD IN GD. And I would also have to agree with dork, there are quite a few threads about GD lately.

It could be easily be argued that this thread is also sharing a personal problem, but I won't ;). Your examples are first insensitive then outright wrong, and your advice is miserable. And voyeurisim isn't about sharing, but "viewing", so a person starting a thread can't be a voyeur, by definition. I don't necessarily disagree with the intent of the topic, just it's presentation. It's weak and misguided and does little to encourage the behaviour you desire.

Well, I don't like taking shit, that's all. This man started spamming his own site, then posting personal info about you, then calling you and I pedophiles, then registering several accounts and worst of all, he thinks he's great and unnoticed. I was polite when he flamed me, I flame him when he's polite. Quid Pro Quo :)

and now i quote, from liquid's site....
difficult not to feel a little bit...
i feel like i've lost all direction in my life. for example, i used to LOVE programming; lately, i can't even begin to enjoy it. what else am i good at? nothing.
which leads me to my current dilemma: what do i do for the rest of my college career? two years left and i have no idea what i should major in. nothing really seems interesting anymore.
thus, i am without direction. i just sit here and do nothing all day, wasting these precious moments before i die. wow, that was melodramatic. almost a fucking Dashboard moment :P
on the upside, my 3 libras 5 track single and my signed mer de noms cds came today. totally rad.
fuck fuck fuck. TDN/O keeps fucking up and guess whos inbox is getting hit with error messages? :P like anyone's inbox needs extra email after those bastard worms that hit the internet last week.
