Instrumental Music

What is your favorite instrumental music ?
I have to say that in addition to a LOT of ambient music (I'll make a thread on that later :) ), I've been blown away by the two studio albums of Craig Armstrong "The Space Between Us" and "As If To Nothing" : they are sheer musical beauty.
I also listen a lot to Mogwai, some Kenji Kawai film music (Avalon, anyone ?) and I am absolutely fond of the music created by Nobuo Uematsu for the Final Fantasy games :)

Never heard of Craig Armstrong. I'm recently into Mogwai (Happy Songs/Rock Action), some of the tracks are well-sculptured. I haven't got many purely instrumental albums. If we're talking long pieces of music, I'd say Stereolab and early Mercury Rev are my favourties.

there's a band from around here called sputniks down - try googling for them, they have a lot of mp3s online (look for "M.M." or "champion of the last handclappers" if you can, i'm sure they're on one of the band members' sites). their music is all instrumental, and fantastic. very good live, too. :up:

I listen to a fair amount of instrumental and ambient music, sometimes vocals aren't needed. I've got quite a bit of the stuff from the list by Mattress (nice selection).

Also Craig Armstrong has made some very nice music, As If To Nothing is a great album. He's done a few film scores as well which people might know even if they don't think that they know his music.

Very much in the same camp as Labradford, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, Mogwai. The odd wall of feedback (out of nowhere) keeps it fresh.

I am absolutely fond of the music created by Nobuo Uematsu for the Final Fantasy games.

A lot of people do a lot of bitching about certain performers and artists being overrated. Nobuo Uematsu is no acception. He can produce good music (granted that most of his prior works were loops like none other), believe me, but there are other game composers who deserve the same amount (if not more) respect as him. As somebody who is pursuing the career path of game composition, check these people out:

Michiru Yamane (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night), Dave Wise & Eveline Fischer (Donkey Kong Country series), Ishiwatari Daisuke (Guilty Gear series), Masahiro Andoh and Isamu Ohira (Gran Tursimo 2) KCE Japan Sound Team, Masami Udea (Resident Evil 1 and 2), Hiroki Kikuta (Seiken Densetsu 2 and 3), Yoko Shimomura (Parasite Eve & Legend of Mana), Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage series), Akitaka Yohyama & others (Tekken Tag Tournament), Yasunori Mitsuda (Xenogears) and Noriyuki Asakura (Tenchu).

Wow, I can't believe no one has mentioned Classical Gas by Mason Williams, that song is awesome... Someone mentioned Darude on another topic, they've got decent instrumentals.

Boston, Bon Jovi, Toto, Fleetwood Mac, and Tom Petty come to mind as well but it's not pure instrumental music that they do.

one of my ex-girlfriends left her Godspeed tapes in my car. i think i threw it out the window when i accidentally popped it in the cassette deck. so yeah, couldn't get into it.

The Go! Team is sort of instrumental music, and gets you pumped up. I've also always liked Tristeza.
