Nominate some albums most people dont know are good..
Dont state obvious choices like the Chronic by Dr Dre or Doggystyle by Snoop. Give me obscure albums.
First 3 I can think of are
Kausion- South Central Los Skanless
AllFrumthaI-(self titled album)
Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz- Kings of crunk & Put yo hood up.
I thought their albums were all loud rapping but these 2 albums bump quite nicely in the car.

Hey, no shit? Thats sweet. They deserve a lot more popularity then they've gotten. What hurts them is they orginally were more of a christian band, although now they're holding out for a major record contract. I think I'm going to one of their shows this weekend. I'll get a CD and but up a torrent link to it. People deserve to hear this shit.

Bit Torrent (download a client here: http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/download.html) is a P2P client that is quite different than others. Its primarily for huge files (50MB~1GB+) and requires you first to download what basically amounts to an instruction file for whatever you want to download. These files can be found at suprnova.org (or do a google search for suprnova, since its always down but there are mirrors everywhere). The selection isn't close to Kazaa but its nice to be able to start downloading a file with every Metallica song ever recorded, and come back the next day and its done. Make sure to read about the BT protocol to get a grasp on how best to use it.
@Cylob:
Yeah, I should get more into the Detroit techno/electronica scene. I love the music, I just haven't gotten into it on a local level yet.

A whole discography in 1 file? What a concept. I take it the songs are zipped.
So you live in Detroit Shane M.:) It has a great heritage for techno & house, but you must know far more than me (at my desk 10,000 miles away). Anyway - respect!

Know what, usually not. Sometimes they come as a .rar file. But for example, with the Metallica thing, I told it to put it into My Documents. When it finished, I checked it, and there were like 15 folders in there, one for each album. What happens is when you d/l the 'information header file' (.torrent) it allocates the space on your hardrive and sets up the folder/file structure before it ever downloads one byte of the actual file. So it looks right away like you just downloaded a gig of music even though its all just really 'claimed space' at the time.
Yeah, Detroit is great for techno to a point. We have the worlds largest electronic music festival (lovefest would more be strictly techno) but honestly, many clubs here don't play it like they do in the UK or eastern europe either. We get a lot of house and hiphop, whereas I LOVE trance. You can find it if you look though. In 5 years if its still like that I may try to open my own techno club. I think that would make a killing around here.

Sounds impressive. I usually acquire 3 or 4 albums at a time for any given artist, it's a case of doing it track by track. The system above is a dream. I've often thought of a web-ferret program that would track down all songs by an artist and dload them. Lazy me.
Shane M
12th September 2003, 14:24
Yeah the track by track thing is a pain. Now its even worse because half the files don't have id3 tags, half of them are fuX0red by the RIAA and have those scratches halfway through, and I don't share on Kazaa anymore b/c of the lawsuits. BT torrent allows me to share as well as get better quality music. Its just often a little slower on average...but also easier.

Anyway, to get back on the topic....
This one isn't unknown really but not widely known. Any album by Spearhead is great.
Cylob
12th September 2003, 14:56
Spearhead have a new album out I see (commended by AMG). I hadn't heard of them - some sort of political rap (as if rap can be anything else). Sounds interesting.
Shane M
12th September 2003, 16:48
Yeah its pretty good stuff. I haven't listened to much on their newer albums, I kinda lost track of him after Home. But yeah, its somewhat politically motivated but more importantly its rap with a positive message. And not stupid shit like Wil Smith either. Many people who don't like rap like Spearhead. They rock.

Cheers spaceplayradio.:) Another artist with a low profile is Legowelt. Very distinctive electro from Holland (The Hague I believe). I would recommend the tracks:
Legowelt - Sturmvogel
Hong Kong Counterfeit - Metal Disco (Legowelt Remix)
Both widely available from your green friend.

Mr.Bungle - Disco Volante (maybe not obscure in the sense of "rare" but certainly obscure musically... and Goddammit I Love That Album! ;) )
Scum Element - In The Night (I don't think too many people outside Vancouver would know this band)
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - (don't know the name of any albums but they're damn good)
Liquid Tension Experiment - LTE, LTE 2
Yakuza - (also don't know the name of the album, if anybody knows it would help me out a lot, the one track that hooked me was 'Chicago Typewriter')

If I had it I'd definitely back it up.
Snowpony are little known. Made up of ex - Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine and Moonshake members. Their last album 'Sea Shanties for Space Ships' was very good actually. You could call it a fusion of those bands, you can hear all 3 influences in the same track.:)

hehe I rembember most of these some a little after my time Choas AD and stuff.
*Shudder* though at Kreator. :) A truely average/bad Thrash band.
Surely Testimony of the ancients (I think it was called that at the time when I had a pre-release of this it was there last album but they obviously reformed) is a better album then Consuming Impulse (there debut). A lovely album that was/is.
A lot of teh Morrisound stuff was interesting. (A studio in TAmpa Florida where 95% of all death metal at the time was recorded. Tom Morris I think was teh producer...ummh this is all from memory not followed teh scene for 10 years)
Starting with teh early stuff like
MOrbid Angel - Altars of Madness (debut)
Entombed - Clandestine (edges out ther debut Left HAnd PAth ( I think they were called Entombed then not Nilist or whatever they were before))
Then I liked
Vaders debut cannot remember the name but on Earache as the above 22.
ANd that was about the last I bought at the time.
for darker stuff try
PAradise LOst - Gothic (2nd Album)
Autopsy - Mental Funeral (2nd album)
Anethemas debut (forgot name)

Senor Coconut - El Baile Aleman (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=MISS70308230543&sql=Aa96jtrpekl2x)
From AMG - "For an absurdly comic idea, Señor Coconut proved to have more than a single note at their — or perhaps his — disposal, managing two albums and even planning a U.S. tour. German DJ and producer Uwe Schmidt(aka Atom Heart) had released dance music in his homeland under a number of different aliases during the first half of the 1990s. But he'd become bored with the European music scene and in 1996 transferred his base of operations to Chile in order to begin exploring the possibilities of Latin music, which was, he said, "a pretty much undiscovered planet to me. It unveils lots of interesting musical worlds to me." Adopting the ridiculous Señor Coconut mo****r, he first cooked up El Gran Baile, a distinctly Latin-flavored groove-a-thon, and did a remix for former Deee-Liteturntablist Towa Tei. Then he began to ponder the possibilities of a German-Latin fusion, and found his material in the unlikeliest of places — the greatest hits of man-machine band Kraftwerk, best-known for their very inhuman, unemotional approach to music — the very opposite of Latin passion. The result was El Baile Alemán. Although credited to Señor Coconut y Su Conjunto, it was purely the work of Schmidtand three vocalists, who took the Kraftwerkmachine ideal and tipped it on its head, putting in programmed cumbia, merengue, and salsa rhythms to flavor the Teutonic stew. Released as a one-off in 2000, it received a fair amount of critical acclaim in the U.S., more than Schmidthad received for any of his other work. In March 2001, Señor Coconut — now a real eight-piece band — was set to undertake a short headlining tour in North America, but visa problems for some of the Chilean musicians forced a cancellation."
Magnificent album.

ok.. heres a few that you should all try to find.
The Prayer Boat - Polichinelle
A bit like buckley, a bit like sigur ros, but very unique. An amazingly soothing voice, incredible songs.. the works.
Ours - Distorted Lullabies
Well, the main problem is that they can easily be looked at as jeff buckley rip offs, but they definatly are worthy of the comparison. And in itself, its a really really nice albumn.
Sparklehorse - Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot
Well, maybe not so obscure a band, but the albumn is often discarded by most people. Its my fav of theirs. Its so pure and totaly unique. Nothing i have ever come across has ever seemed similar to the aesthetic that this albumn achieves. You can sum it up in the word "horsie"
dEUS - In a bare under the sea
My fav indy albumn ever.
Dragon ash - Buzz Songs
Jap band. The name says it all.
Modest mouse - The moon and antarctica
Again, not really that obscure now. But if you havnt got into modest mouse yet, you really should. Anyone will like this band because they are so unique. It reminds me of the presidents in that both styles are just plain weird and dont seem to have any statment to make.. they just rock.
the refused - the shape of punk to come
RATM + the hives + the clash + hardcore superstar + international noise conspiracy = ???
..
jeezz.. i should stop there i think.
oh wait... heres some more great ones:
red house painters - red house painters
the divine comedy - regeneration
Tim buckley - hello and goodbye
elliott smith - figure 8
ok thats all..

Any Millencolin album. They're a Swedish punk band that's been around for 10 years. They're not largely known in the US, although they've gotten their plug on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 soundtrack and have toured here quite a few times. :D
The Godz. Don't know the name of any of their albums, but I've got one of them on order from Amazon. It's been delayed now, but it's worth my wait. But they've from the mid-70's to early-80's era, and they're damn good for a heavy metal band from that time too... :)

A Classical Album I have been heavily promoting is the Fabio Biondi/Europa Galante version of "Vivaldi's The Four Seasons". Now I know everyone knows the tune, but it is quite original interpretation- I highly reccomend it to rock and or roll fans, as the instrumentation- while classical, owes more to a modern rock and or roll sensibility.
Amazon Link (listen to the samples, as you won't find this with file sharing) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00007KMRW/qid=1068540590//ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i5_xgl15/002-1370772-0601629?v=glance&s=classical&n=507846)
