Do you think today's music will last?

A lot of bands/musicians have come and gone over the years. So what I want to know is: Which current artists do you think we will still be listening to in 15 years? By that I mean which ones will still be making new music at that time?

My choices:

Nickelback
Audioslave
Staind (maybe)

I dont think any of them would be too influential in that amount of time. I do not really feal that most bands today will have much lasting appeal. It is just the way the bands are made and marketed. Yes, they are made (linkin park...?) to make money.
But I feel if The Mars Volta stay together (after their loss of the keyboardist), they could be one of the most influential bands in recent time.
Other then that, I would say Tool, they just make quality music. And have been around for some time, and hopefully will last longer (but not to Metallica or Rolling Stones type status)

Tool has already been around for a long time. If they go a few years longer they will have reached Metallica status as far as longevity but so far they have not had quite the popularity of Metallica (despite being better :D).

I'm with laz9999, most of today's mainstream is disposible. Faux-punk and pop-culture are modelled largely on 70's acts (Abba/Sex Pistols), there isn't really anything *new* in the mainstream. There's an abundance of good alternative music, but it's been pushed back underground. I don't care, I'm an avid tunneller.

Ask yourself this - what was the last ground-breaking act to make it in the mainstream? You'd have to go back to the late 90's.

New Age or Ambient music will last forever :up:. Other than that, German Techno, going through a low at the moment, will rise again & dominate the music world for the next 5-10 years. :up:

There's a fair whack of German techno around - Tarwater, Pole, Console... Kraftwerk have a new mix album.... I'm very fond of the stuff, I hope it doesn't fizzle out.

And of course, Flying Steps is awesome too. Interestingly, Techno having originated in Germany in the early 70s, evolved into several genres like Trance, House, Grunge, Rave etc... though many of them have kinda strayed over the last few years, Techno has always stuck to it's roots, i.e. experimenting with music. That's why Techno has & will always be the best :up:.

I heard one of their hit tracks "In Da Arena" was the remake of an 80s track by Yazoo, for which Alison Moyet was the lead singer... that is interesting.

Rock acts traditionaly last forever anyway. Look from the Rolling STones to Metallica, Iron Madien and co.

Although I do wonder in 15 years time if this NU Metal fad will be around....Actually I do not wonder at all I already know. :)

Some nu-metal acts have disappeared while others are changing with the times. A few, like Limp Bizkit, are sticking to the current nu-metal sound which isn't going to work much longer.

The last 20-30 years has been musically, quite disposable.

"Will the real slim shady please stand up" will not echo in the halls of an Orbiting Earth megabase 50 years from now. "Smells like teen spirit" will not resound in the chambers of a Moon City 100 years from now. "Cat Scratch Fever" will not be aired in a starship 200 years from now.

'Music' is not created anymore to have lasting power- it is so rooted in its time, in its issues and politics, in the pathetic whining about percieved societal unequality of the youth generation of _____ era.

Only what transcends time and is a universal, all encompassing statement regarding the human condition will survive. I can see Future Astronauts listening to Louis Armstrong, to Sergio Mendes/Brazil 66, Mozart and Co., and of course both Strauss's (2001 Joke).

I would be willing to wager money that Limp Bizkit, Eminem, Metallica, and KC and the Sunshine Band do not factor into mankinds glorious future.

Since the last post the garage-punk scene's come into its own. However, how long will it all last? The likes of Franz Ferdinand are okay, but who'll remember "Darts of Pleasure" in a few years time?

I know bands like Shadows Fall and Children of Bodom will be around for a while...Guitarists like Jonathan Donais
and Matthew Bachand (Shadows Fall) kinda remind me of the twin metal guitarists of Judas Priest and Metallica, and Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom) is one hell of a kid that can shred...Good to see some new bands finally having guitarists that can solo... :D

I dont think modern music will last much. hell, I got sick of it and started listening to old rock and stuff allready, I am just 17. dont think it will last at all, maybe Tim McGraw and Nelly will stick around for a bit. Tim just can put such emotion in it, and nelly sounds good
