That has to be the saddest song I've ever heard... but ironically, that is Alphaville's biggest hit to date.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow (the kid who's funeral I had gone to was only 13, and his choir director sang it at the service, changed the whole tone and meaning of hte song for me)

i know a song by the same guy called "Ballad of the Green Berets"
heres the lyrics:
Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret.
Silver Wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret.
Trained to live off nature's land
Trained in combat, hand to hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage picked from the Green Beret.
Silver Wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret.
Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her his last request.
Put Silver Wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret.
aside from that is the song "this time" by the smashing pumpkins. the first time i heard it was the day i broke up with my girlfriend. not fun

And why is that whenever you have a "split" every sad song created just seems to play on the radio? Weird how that happens. :)

Radiohead is definately one of those bands...I think How to Disappear Completely and Street Spirit (Fade Out) are their saddest songs. Another one is Brad Nowell's (of Sublime) acoustic cover of Guava Jelly/This Train. Black is a good one (well depends on how you look at it)..Pearl Jam's or Aaron Lewis's cover. Pearl Jam's unplugged version is awesome.

Another sad song, which is by Vertical Horizon is called "Sunrays and Saturdays" as well as the all time sad song, and the one song I cried a thousand times to since it was a song that was first played when I broke up with my fiance is called "Best I Ever Had" which is also by Vertical Horizon.

Earlier in the post, someone mentioned the song by Tears For Fears called Mad World. Later, the song was covered by a Gary Jules which as the soundtrack to the film Donnie Darko. The song by Jules is also very sad, as well as this flash movie, which I am including a link to. It is probably one of the saddest things you will ever see. However, it is a good piece of work, and the music as well is good.

This band sound very British (in the Slowdive vein), I was amazed to find otherwise. There's some good music coming from the US right now. Most of it's imitation, but I can see new genres in the making soon.:)

Local H - Bound for the Floor
This song always depresses me. It doesn't sound so sad when you listen to it but it is.
Born to be down
I think that I’ve said this before now
Born to be down
What good is confidence?
And you just don’t get it
You keep it copacetic
And you learn to accept it
You know it’s so pathetic
And AFI - "The Leaving Song" Depresses the shit out of me too. Can take a kickass mood and shove it in the dirt at a moment's notice.
's hard to notice gleaming from the sky
When you're staring at the cracks
It's hard to notice what is passing by with eyes lowered
You... walked away, heard them say
"Poisoned hearts will never change, walk away again"
All the cracks, they lead right to me
And all the cracks will crawl right through me
All the cracks, they lead right to me
And all the cracks will crawl right through me, and I fell apart
