View Full Version : The worst singers of all time?

Cylob
3rd October 2003, 09:36
I nominate:

Johnny Rotten (largely for his work with P.I.L.)
Bernard Sumner
Alex Lifeson (which is why he plays guitar)
Matey from the Smashing Pumpkins (Zwan is it)?

next you will be saying Gene are good!

Cylob

I admit, Martin Rossiter's voice takes a little getting used to (he's like a singing sheep). Nonetheless, this is a great album:

Gene - Olympian (1995)

Oh, you are so on my list!:weird:

Wayne Coyne - The Flaming Lips - is not a very good singer, but I don't count being a poor singer as a bad thing. Sometimes, its in the attitude and the emotion. Coyne always states that he is bad singer, but dosen't care because he loves to sing.

hhhmmmm, I'll have to add the late, great Janice Joplin to the list as well and she certainly proves the above point.

For me that's part of New Order's charm. Bernard saying "stuff convention" and coming out with the worst vocal's of the 80's. I love the stuff.

Also, their appearance on TOTP for Blue Monday has to be one of the worst live performances ever. But I love it! I almost think they screwed-up on purpose.

Reportedly, it was the first live performance in the history of this show, they said they would suck at pretending to play and sing, so they decided to do it for real :D

What do you mean by 'stuff convention' ?

Cylob
10th October 2003, 15:12
The 1983 convention of the polished pop record. I liked the charts in '83, if I was given Power, Corruption & Lies at the time I'd have binned it after the first track. It was probably the furthest you could get from New Wave.

I appreciate Bernard's attitude now, there shouldn't be any rules for music. You can even produce your own work!

SlipKnot. His lyrics are great . though he can not sing for shit!

Cylob

Wait til Taylor sees that (though I have to agree).

I can't stomach Alanis Morisette, I loathe that woman's voice!!!! Apparently she's at the top of the female vocalists tree, but I'd place her at the bottom (to be used as a foot-stool). You'd see PJ Harvey's footprints all over her face.:)

My nomination is Rob Smith from the Cure. I don't get why so many people like him so much or even the band as a whole for that matter.

Cylob
2nd June 2005, 14:45
I like Robert Smith's voice, it's instantly distinguishable and works with the music (the music being the ocean, the voice being the vessel). Suede, The Smiths are other examples.

I can't stomach an abrasive or overbearing voice that works against the tune (ie; Smashing Pumpkins).

Twilightseer
2nd June 2005, 16:11
What you say about Smith is true Cylob, but his voice has deterioriated over the years (just watch the Trilogy DVD if you can, it's blatant) and on the last album, he yelled more than he sang, which surely doesn't help.

Eh, noooo....well, dunno if he ever made something like that.

Turbofolk consists mostly of badly played random local one/twostring instruments, badly played harmonica, and very simplistic and idiotic electro drum beat. With maybe some lame electro melody thrown in. And of course a wailing male or female "singer", "singing" about... well, nothing sensible really. The lyrics are always idiotic. And it's irritating to everyone except for hicks, who play it very loudly from their cars/in their...khm....watering holes, weddings, etc.

If you want an example that's actually listenable without wanting to smash your speakers or kill yourself, get this. I know these guys, and they're intentionally making thrash music. It's not true to the style (thankfully), but comes close in some ways (including the black person saying some crappy thing sample being repeated a lot).

No, no, no. The The is original and very listenable. That stuff I'm talking about definitely isn't. The beats aren't minimalistic, but rather plain, boring and unimaginative (and don't change at all during the entire song).

Cylob can't stand that kind of singers, just look at the people he's bashing as well eg. Thom Yorke, John Lydon.

And it can't be the whiny part of their singing style since he likes The Cure, nor the grating part since he likes Rush.
Maybe the combination of both?

Personally I find Billy Corgan a lot more bearable than, say, the guy from Creed.

zootm
21st November 2005, 11:14
I don't think I'd use the word "grating" to describe Geddy Lee - he's high pitched, right enough, but it's not like a screech or anything.

Cylob
21st November 2005, 12:46
Geddy has a limited range, which he stays inside rather well. Rush are innovators, unlike Smashing Pumpkins, who walked the same straight line for their meaningless existence.

It's not just the voice, it's the combined fact that everyone on the planet loves 'em (bar 2-3 people), they have a shit singer, the lyrics are angst-by-numbers, the music is more of a drone than anything. And most importantly of all, they're just shite. :p

Yeah, Yes just sound like Rush to me. And only a limited subset of Rush's range, too. I certainly wouldn't say Yes were more innovative than Rush.

Not saying they're not good, they're great, but still.

Cylob
21st November 2005, 15:13
I can't agree more. Rush successfully changed with the times and broke into many a genre (without it being obvious).

I can't think of many bands that rival their range.

There are certain vocalists I just can't stomach, Corgan's one of 'em. The music's decent (which is a shame), I just wonder why they picked the only band member who can't sing to take the stage. It'd be like sticking Debbie Harry on drums??
