I have an old 386DX with 4 megs of RAM. I don't know what kind of computer it is. I have no info on the motherboard. It has an 80 meg hard drive, 3.5 in. floppy and a 5.25 in. floppy. No sound card. And a 9600 baud modem. If you can help me overclock it to a 486 or better it would be appreciated.

That archaic processor (released 1989) should be donated to the smithsonian not overclocked. First off if its an Intel 386 its not going to be faster then 33Mhz thus overclocking it will reap meager performance increase’s even on ms-dos based applications. besides the difference between a 386 and 486 is more then just clock speeds (486 is @ about 66Mhz), the 486 has also significant improvements on handling Floating Point calculations (graphics). so even if by some feat you can get the proccessor to operate at 200% its native clockspeed it still wont be as capable as the 486.

Even if you were able to overclock it, it's not like you'd be able to do anything really useful with it anyway.
A 386 with 4mb will run windows 3.1 just fine though, so find a copy, install that and give it to someone who needs a word processor or something.

I was actually successful at installing Windows 95. It runs just fine but it has no extra hard drive space. It also took about 3 or 4 hours to install Windows 95 on this 386DX with 4 megs of RAM.

I would also like to overclock my Compaq Presario 9240. I would like to overclock it at least 33MHZ.

That's amazing. 95 should have not let you install, because (if I recall correctly), 95 has a minimum RAM requirement of 8MB. The only reason I would know is because my Dad was bitching about it at the time :D
On another note, you should load that puppy with Linux. As a server or word processor, it'd work wonderfully.

Those don't need to be overclocked. You will not get a useful gain out of it. Just spend $200 on a much newer computer.

Oh, and on another note - what anubis said.
You can get computers literally 100 times faster for less than $200.
I got a Pentium 2 400 MHz w/ 192 MB RAM and a 6 GB HD for $60 including shipping.
It took me a massive 20 minutes to find it on www.ebay.com.

windows 95 version one will run on less than 8MB
had it running on a 386 also.
it's in basic the same as the well known win95 version only has a few .dll less in it.
