your totally right about hollywood homicide but i might add that josh hartnett just barely makes it convincing and worth watching however you attempt is not a bad one as you said its actually quite refreshing and welcomed

the last movie i watched was urban justice starring steven segal and it was a reality check for people raised in the projects and even those who were raised in richville places of suburbia but it the reality check is that people take advantage and take for granted the things and people they dont realize in the end are going to be the ones to more powerful in society than them and probably the ones to prove those who,m take them for granted an those who take situations around them for granted the ones they suck things around or to are the ones who finish them off so it really hits home for me too because the movies is pretty much about the ex seal who,s the father of a narc unit in the ghetto the son gets blown away by a dealers lackys and then segal the father of the dead young man packs his gear and moves into the ghetto and lives to find the truth and the dude that blasted his kid and blasts him its really action packed and not many guns being shot in this one so it was really great if you want u can add me 2 ur ppl list im new here so it be nice to have a friend to talk to thank have a goodone:cool:

Good supporting actress.

The actor that played batman annoys me in many movies, including this one.

Overall, I found the movie to be worth seeing at the theatres - an amount of praise that I RARELY give to a movie. Most good movies should be just rented for home viewing, but going to the theatre for this one was worth the money and effort.

Pineapple Express

(Wow, the theater was packed for a Wednesday afternoon)

It was good, but not as good as I thought it would be. A few of the funniest parts were spoiled in the trailers, and most of the other laughs were probably generated from the crowd effect. It did have its moments, though (especially a drop-dead hilarious one near the ending), so overall it was a solid stoner comedy.

Really sucked.
Like... "angry for wasting the money to rent it" sucked.
The spiderman dude just isn't cut out for the part at all. He's a pansy ass pre-pubescent dweeb shouting fuck and trying to act hardcore. Total waste/loss of time and money.

Eastern Promises.

I'm not so pissed about renting it, as it only sucked a bit, but it sucked enough to tell people that it's probably not really worth renting.

It's a Russian mob movie, but anyone that knows much about the Russian mob would most certainly not like it. The actors arbitrarily toggle between English and Russian languages (with subtitles), but for no reason at all. Generally, there's a reason one switches languages, often because it's more comfortable in present company or better for concealing what is being said, or to convey strong meaning that would be lost in translation, but not every other sentence in the same damn scene. Annoying. Boring, uncreative storyline and poorly done special effects too.

I need better suggestions.

disaster movie, it really was a disaster, many careers (hopefully) ended by appearing in this trite, it tries and fails at being a satire of many movies (i thought parodies and satires were supposed to be researched to be any good? oh right, i forgot who the writers responsible for this shit movie are), not only that you'll want to kill someone everytime they sing a fucking song, which unfortunately is about every 10 minutes, the only satire even remotely done well was amy winehouse except she wasn't shown smoking crack.

avoid this movie at all costs and if you must go see it at theaters, bring LOTS of people and agree beforehand to walk out, you'll want to, trust me and hopefully the rest of the audience will follow suit.

Maybe I'm spoiled by Pixar movies. The rendering is pretty cheesy. The story is kind of lackluster. Another annoyance is that the DVD version is purposefully degraded in video quality. Artifacts show and the DVD was left with 3 GB of free space that could have cured the problem. Sell BD's by making the DVD sub par? Hmmm....

C minus.

It's just more Bush bashing crap though it tries to give that a thin veil. Getting Dreyfus to play Dick Cheney... now that's just genius! It's the only reason I'd give this film a break.

I especially like the dream sequence when George Sr. appears to "W" like Jacob Marley's ghost from "A Christmas Carol".

Star Trek (the one playing in theaters)

Good one to see on a big screen with good sound. It's not better or worse than other Star Trek movies, but worth the trip. There was a great line in it too - someone asked Spok "Are you out of your Vulcan mind?" (meant to sound like "Are you out of your fucking mind?"). I'm not one to ******dly laugh during a movie, but that caught me by surprise.

edit - the o u t w a r filter stuck again... The ****** should read o u t w a r without spaces. They need to fix that.

You couldn't go very wrong with selections from Bogart's filmography:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000007/

Some of my favorites are Sabrina, Dead Reckoning, The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not and High Sierra.

Check out some of these less known films instead of watching The Caine Mutiny, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca or Treasure of the Sierra Madre again :)

There is no such thing as a bad Bogie movie.

For my own viewing this week, I have been watching some of Mission Impossible Season 1. I was just a little kid in 1967, so I grew up on later episodes of Mission Impossible and reruns usually featuring Peter Graves as Mr. Phelps.

The leader of the IMF was initially Dan Briggs, played by Steven Hill in this first season. Barbara Bain won Emmy's in 67, 68 and 69. It was deserved.

I'm half way through the 7 disk set. Good stuff.

So, the joy of Netfix is you can have a "Saved" movie lists which are basically movies that haven't come out yet. So last spring I added what were supposed to be all the summer blockbuster movies. They sit there at the bottom of the page and I forget about them, eventually they get a DVD/Blu-Ray release date and the pop in the queue. If it turns out after the movie release the movie is other crap I remove it. Sometimes I forget to remove it and it slowly makes it way up to the top of my lists and a few days later it shows up in my mailbox to my dismay. That being said.....

Dragonball: Evolution - Back in college two of my roommates were huge fans of Dragonball and Dragonball Z animes. (This is what caused me to avoid anime for years. Later I found myself a casual fan, but I don't consider myself an anime fanboy or anything, but that is besides the point. The point is that I am aware of the source material). First off it seems this movie has no idea what it wants to be. It starts off as a martial arts movie, movies quickly to teen angst drama, tries to be humorous but still have a "serious" plot. I can say the plot makes sense, it is retarded, but at last I could follow it. Now the acting the character development and the action scenes, they are just utter crap. The two random separate romances show up with very little development (though one is way rose then the other). Plus it doesn't even redeam its slef with the female cast. Fighting femals but tehre is a severe lack of gratutious tight/leather outfits (they need to take a hint form the Underworld series, or even the DOA movie). 1 out of 5.

[I did watch the entire movie, and there have been some movies I couldn't make it all they way though, so that might be a slight 1+ rating there. Then again, unlike my old DVD player the Blu-Ray player on 2X Fast Forward still plays audio. So A half hour in when I realized there is still 50 minutes to go, I can get though it all in a cool 25 minutes.]

Horsemen (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892767/)

Horsemen is interesting only for the performance of Ziyi Zhang as "Kristin" the gentle foster child turned demon. It has a Dennis Quaid performance that fell flat.

The script could have found something interesting to do with the biblical reference to the four horsemen of the apocalypse that is the basis of the story. It doesn't.

Despite a bunch of gore, including an aborted baby in a plastic bag, I fell asleep on this stinker twice before finishing it.

Knowing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448011/)

I've never watched a Nicolas Cage movie that I haven't liked. Given that, "Knowing" was a bit of a disappointment. The special effects were awesome, the story line was engaging, but I think the end got pretty contrived and Disneyesque. I couldn't really explain further without a spoiler.

:down: Fair. It was worth a dollar from Redbox I guess.

Valkyrie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0985699/)

OK, so Tom Cruise movies almost always make me choke, but like Last Samurai, even a stopped watch is right twice a day.

My favorite Cruise line is from Mission Impossible 2. "You've never seen me really angry!" I almost fell out of my chair laughing. Maybe he was gonna call Nicole Kidman to kick some ass :)

This movie is about the plot to kill Adolph Hitler during WWII. We all know what happened. That makes the ending sort of predictable. It's about the only thing I can think that is a negative for this movie.

Tom Cruise doesn't seem like as much of a rodent as usual. The cinematography is excellent. The story is suspenseful and well done. Even Tom couldn't spoil it.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421715/)

This movie is L....ONG! Benjamin Button is born old, turns into stud muffin Brad Pitt and de-ages into a baby.

The critics loved it. The sets were beautiful and won Oscars. Too gooey, soppy for my taste. Too superficially formula clever for it's own good and at 166 minutes... way too long... Maybe a fair chick flick.

If you can get past the gloom and doom message that accompanies all modern nature films and a predictable narration of James Earl Jones to the conclusion that everything will be extinct tomorrow unless you drive a Prius, this movie does have some fantastic photography.

Personally, I'd turn off the audio and listen to some music while I watched it and spare myself the "save the planet" garbage if I were to watch it again. It's really depressing.

3/10 for politically correct drooling.... 8/10 for photography.. Bluray required.

It's been a bit, and I have been busy with Netflix.

I Love You, Man - First off I have to say that Jason Segel is still awesome, plus he isn't nude in this one. But I found this pretty funny. A lot of guy and physical humor, as well as boldly function jokes. There is that whole story and moral wraped in there, but it doesn't beat you over the head with it (I'm looking at you Knocked Up). Not too much to say about this one, but if you liked Forgetting Sarah Marshal then you will probably like this. 4 out of 5.

Big Trouble - Might not have heard about this one. A comedy movie (based on a Dave Barry book) that features both a bomb and a gun on a plane, originally scheduled for release on September 21, 2001. Timing not so much on their side. It was released with little advertisement and fanfare the next April. That being said, this also is a really funny movie. A pretty impressive cast plus it kept me laughing through almost all of it. Personally, I think it is worth checking out. A really funny movie that suffered from really shitty timing. Another 4 out of 5.

Knowing - Look, Nicholas Cage released another movie! Why do studios let him do that? It starts off as a decent sci-fi flick when a time capus from the 50s is unearthed and Cage's son gets a mysterious page full of numbers. He figures it out and it turns out it has predicrted all the nautral disasters and the end of the world (not a spoiler, that was in the damn trailer). Does Cage have to prebvent these disasters? Where does the note come from? Can he save the world? Does anyone actually care? This movie falls for the good idea, poor execution problem. The first half of the movie is good, suspenseful and mysterious. Then the movie explains what is going on, and there is just gets stupid and stupider. Also, I am sumhow susposed to belive that Nick Cage is a MIT professor? Really? The movie starts off well enough at a decent three and then takes a sharp turn to stupid, slamming into one. Going for the middle ground... 3 out of 5.

Finally, just returned yesterday:
Secretary - James Spader and a naked Maggie Gyllenhaal (not for all of it sadly). A self-mutilating and self-loathing woman goes to work for an egomainac lawyer. A S&M relationship forms, emtions get mixed, things get all fucked up for the both of them. It's a pretty emotional movie and it does in to multiple psychotic issues of both parties. Did I mentioned a totally nude Maggie Gyllenhaal? Worth seeing, I think. 4 out of 5.

Motel Hell (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081184/)

Motel Hell is the just about worst movie ever made. It might even be as bad as Ed Wood films. If not, it's close. I remember watching it at the drive-in back in 1980.

It's so bad, so camp and so :igor: You'll love it!

My rent by mail selections this week included the Blu-Ray Bourne Trilogy (http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=bourne). Suprisingly, I never saw any of them, maybe because Matt Damon looks like a dork and I didn't want to ruin the novels. He still looks like a dork. It's not as good as the Robert Ludlum novels. For an indy film, I thought this was surprisingly well done. Reminded me of Blair Witch. It jumped on the same hand held look fad bandwagon as a lot of films after Blair Witch. Given that, it's one of the better offerings in the fad. I like to see stuff like this that's obviously budget, but still worth it. Well, back on the obscure Sci-Fi filler on Netflix, which brings up two movies:

Code 46 - Future dystopia, cloning is big, light is bad, people lives in restricted cities and the outside world is slums for the genetically impure. Code 46 refers basically to inbreeding, and with cloning technology and all, it is hard to know if you are genetically related to someone or not. Guy goes on a business trip, falls for a woman, turns out to be from the same clone batch as his mother. An odd concept really, but an interesting movie that I enjoyed. A bit hard to follow at times, but the story kept me interested though most of it. A pretty decent movie, but far form amazing, but maybe worth checking out. 3 out of 5.

The Gene Generation - This one shares similar concepts with genetic manipulation and the genetically pure being allowed into the safety of cities and genetic manipulation outlawed. Though is leads to "gene hackers." This has Ling Bai as a hired assassin, and also features her in gratuitous leather outfits (a popular genre with me) and a topless scene. Plus oddly featuring the Medical Examiner form CSI: Vegas. But there is more to this movie then Ling Bai's tits, it is pretty entertaining and features some fun action scenes. It features some beautiful choreographed fight scenes where Ling Bai 's character (Michelle) is just mowing baddies down. The overall story is decent, but not all that captivating, and I found myself confused a few times. Not bad, but not something to go out of the way for, another 3 out of 5.

And I finally made it to the theater to see...
Zombieland - I was a little worried this movie might have just been a romantic comedy with zombies in it. While the pairing was the one of the main points, the pairing of Columbus and Wichita didn't seem to take over the movie. Columbus's "Rules for Surviving Zombieland" and Woody Harrelson's (Tallahassee) managed to be comedy gold. Though if you are really into zombies, they are pretty much a background character and don't play a major part until the end. The movie is mostly about the interactions and development of the characters. Add that to the cameo I dare not spoil (though plenty of professional reviewers have) was excellent. Add the fact the Comedy Zombie genre is limited to this and "Shaun of the Dead" is has a semi-unique basis. As it stands so far, it might be the best comedy of the year. 4.5 out of 5. (I usually avoid half starts, but it was amazing, just not quite perfect).

Sometimes a movie is all about perspective of how you watch it. I have heard good reviews of this movie and some really horrible reviews as well. Seemed a little off, but a few minutes in I now get why. So a quick review of the same movie twice: Crank 2: High Voltage.

Crank 2: High Voltage (The Action Movie) - The studio calls this an action movie and so does Netflix, so lets start there. A dumb concept that is way over played with the mechanical hart that needs to be charged by shocking the crap out of one's self. So the entire movie is pretty much Chev (Statham) running around trying to find out who stole his heart (after surviving falling out of a helicopter). Basically fast scenes of him either kickign someone's ass or shocking himself, or both at the same time. While over-the-top action can be quite entertaining, it can also get dump if poorly planed and ventures too far outside of the realms of reality. Throw in a couple annoying supporting characters (such as Bai Ling). It's hard to take either the plot, action or even characters seriously. One out of Five.

That being said, a few minutes into the movie (honestly after the opening "News Report" I saw how to really interpret this movie....

Crank 2: High Voltage (The Comedy Movie) - Though I am not sure if it was intended to be this way, Crank 2 feels like Jason Statham doing a parody of Jason Statham movies. Even at one a point a witness in a "news report" saying Chev looked like the guy from those Transporter movies. The movie is so over the top of the gratuitous violence and improbable physics it is near impossible not to laugh. Every character in this movie plays their role in an action move to the extreme which gets to be quite silly fun. There is one scene near the end, the "Godzilla Scene" that I found myself laughing nonstop though out. If you liked Shoot 'em Up and the Action Comedy type movies, if you watch Crank 2 as a comedy you will probably get the same vibe. Being comedy gold, though I don't think intended that way I have to give it a Four out of Five.

The Taking of Pelham 123 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1111422/)

This is a 2009 remake of the 4.5 star 1974 movie of the same name starring Walter Matthau. John Travolta is usually good at playing a psycho killer, but he's a little lost in this script. Denzel Washington stumbles through a pretty lackluster performance as the train dispatcher.

Most of the movie varies little from the original Pelham movie and where it does, it's not as good. The cinematography is reminiscent of a Tarentino film, but since it isn't one, the effect is almost annoying. The reimagined end of the film borders on stupid, but could be considered boring if you felt like being kind.

Yes, I am sure that Mr. Ebert is probably sorta like a man. I miss the late Gene Siskel, who dissented with Ebert on movies where we would almost always agree. Maybe in this case. We'll never know. :( RIP Gene!

I knew if Siskel said  and Ebert said , I was in for a really good film. Now I just have to take the Ebert review and invert... generally speaking.

We should start our own show. Widdy and hippie. You can love sentimental goo movies about high school students and I'll say PASS! High school dramas died for me with "The Breakfast Club" which I did like but would never admit and probably will never watch again.

No offense Widdy, we agree sometimes. Just not this time ;)

If it has kids in it... pass... That lets out modern Star Wars and Harry Potter anything. I am sure glad I don't have to endure Hannah Montana thank the Lord! Brittany Spears, Barney the purple dinosaur,Pokemon, genetically engineered Disney child stars,"My Little Pony" and I are SO done.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - Wow, was this movie bad. Let's start off with suspension of disbelief. Space robots that turn into cars, that I can believe. Shia LaBeouf giving up a Camero that is a f-ing robot and Megan Fox to go to college, that's just too much. I love my time in college, but I would traid it in a second for either a robot car or Megan Fox. A half hour into this movie I found myself totall unintrested, so it is hard to give it a proper reivew because it really didn't have my undivided attention. Yeah, the special effects and giant robots were *amazing* but I think we have gotten to a point where that jsut isn't enough to sell a movie. When computer effects were coming big when I was younger, sure I would see and love a movie because of the special effects, but at this point it is really no big deal. Yeah, giant fighting robots looks amazing, but that just isn't enough to keep my interest anymore. With characters I can't stand, and your standard action fair with limited story or development, this movie just bored the crap out of me. One out of Five.

The Usual Suspects - Back to the older movies I had never seen, and this was worth seeing. A fun crime thriller that kept me quite interested. Though the bad thing about seeing an older movie that is this popular, it has long been spoiled for me, seeing since there is one hell of a twist at the end. Even knowing the ending I quiet enjoyed this movie and the story telling involved. Great characters, good development and just overall a fun movie. Four out of Five.

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra - Like a lot of the toy based movies (and other 80/90s cartoons, I never really played with GI Joe, so I won't argue accuracies). Seeing the previews, I though this looked really bad. To my surprise it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Now admittedly the story is pretty contrived and there are several gigantic plot holes in it as well, but they weren't selling this movie because of the amazing story. So, it comes down to the action and how well it is tied together. Some scenes were quite over the top and even downright silly at times, but still entertaining. A decent cast, enough interweaving of a bit of comedy. It's not a bad movie if you want a decent turn your brain off action movie. Three out of Five.

And now for a nitpick, and there are tons to choose from with this moive, but this is a common theme I see in a lot of these types of movies and it always bugs me. The *gigantic* underground remote secret base. Most secret crime fighting organizations have one, and usually the baddie as well. The baddie never knows where the secret base is, yet say in GI Joe it is a several story underground base with planes and tanks and a giant pool for sub training. There is no way at all a place of that caliber or even 10% of it could be built in secret. The dirt evacuation alone would be impossible to go unnoticed. And instead of some highly complex plan to get a tracking beacon inside said base, why not pay off (or torture) one of the thousands of construction workers that must have been required to work on it. The conspiracy of construction would just be impossible to build a facility of that size and have nobody notice.

Did we spend a couple bucks making this? I think they tossed money at every frame. Wow!

It is hard to believe Abrams actually used film. That may be part of a dying breed of film in the use of anamorphic cameras.

This trekkie, later a trekker, and later bored with the Star Trek franchise ..ok I liked Jolene Blalock.. well like Kirk... "I feel young" :)

Bravo for a terrific resurrection of a long gone friend. How Abrams got some of these shots. including using a Budweiser brewery as an engine room is inspired. Watching the "extras" disk is a kick too. Watching JJ beat up a Panaflex to make it jiggle is fairly funny. Writing the computer simulation of JJ beating up a Panaflez... inspired..

I watched 2010 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086837/). It's one of the few movies I've seen where Bluray did matter. Cool. I wish they would release Blue Thunder in BD.

It's probably because I was in my early adulthood that I liked some of those early 80's movies. Part of it was the change in film technology, where anything with a decent budget was done in 70mm and Dolby sound.

Alien, Escape from New York, The Thing, Star Wars..... After watching these on bleary analog TV sets for 20+ years, it's highly cool to revisit some of these films on progressive scan DVD or BD.

I was Avatar 3d over the weekend. The plot is a little thin, but it's like no movie ever made before. 5 weeks in theaters and it was still selling out on all weekend shows in the two theaters nearest me. 1.1 billion dollars in revenue. Still #1 this weekend.

It's bright, it's brilliant, powerful, colorful eye candy like someone melted 3 dimensional crayons in your eyes. In 160 minutes of 3d, expect eye strain. Optimal seating is centered and pretty far back. Don't be tired. Get there early. You will not want to end up in the front row. You might want some eye drops.

Having to buy the tickets the day before and having to show up an hour ahead of time to get a decent seat, I'd still say:

Also, when I couldn't get into Avatar on the first night because it was sold out. I saw the #2 box office offering "The Book of Eli" which was a pretty formulaic apocalyptic offering which I consider to be *meh* and worth a dollar at the redbox later. 3 stars. You'll get tired of looking at sepia. CG was pretty shoddy in spots. Denzel Washington is pretty if not interesting. Martial arts reminiscent of Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles. A cameo by Malcolm McDowell. Gary Oldman is Gary Oldman typical. Yawn. Not terrible.

Later on DVD or cheapo matinee.

Cloverfield

Basically Blair Witch Project, with even less creativity. Not so bad that I shut it off, but I didn't pause it when it was time to pick up the phone or flip the burgers or change laundry etc.

I went to see Sherlock Holmes on tuesday, I liked it.
Quite a bit of action, decent acting, some good laughs and strong plot. (nice visual style too)
It left the door open for a sequal as well.
