Yep. worth watching, but the last movie that should ever be made with handheld cameras.
I finished the 1915 silent movie 'Birth of a Nation" which was based on the 1905 novel, The Clansman: An Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan. It had a higher box office than any movie made before. The cinematography was groundbreaking. Between the book and the movie, it caused a resurgence in KKK activity. Some of the reviews I've read on this said it was subtly racist. It didn't seem very subtle to me. I think what is revisionist and racist about it is just about as disturbing as what was accurate.

^yeah, the first half hour of Cloverfield was almost bad enough to give a true headache. It got a little less annoying, but still not something I want to go through again.
I'll check out your link.
Last watched was Flight of the Phoenix. It mostly held my attention, and I'm not sorry that I borrowed it from the library (free) and spent the time to watch it. Don't waste more than a buck or two renting it though. It's ok, but not much better than ok. A plane full of oil rig gear crashes on the Mongolian dessert with about a dozen oddball passengers. They have to use the wreckage to build a new plane to fly to safety before running out of water and food.

1965 with Jimmy Stewart or 2004 with Dennis Quaid? Both are pretty decent movies.
When you want the finest prints of significant films, you get Criterion Collection. A happy choice for CC was 1976 "The Man Who Fell to Earth" in BD. David Bowie plays an alien who crash lands on earth to get water. He doesn't count on disingenuous and greedy humans. It's a blast from the past.

'04 w/ Quaid.
Yesterday I was incredibly tired and tried to watch "From Hell", but fell asleep. I don't remember liking or disliking it (too tired to pass judgment); I just remember that it was a string of prostitutes getting murdered one at a time, with an investigation following it. It was set in horse & carriage times.

District 9 - Yeah, didn't see this until it was on DVD, and sad I waited. Such a fun and amazing movie. For some reason I like the documentary feel, though I know it bugs some people. Plus, for a sci-fi movie it seemed more based on character developments then action and cool special effects. As for the plot, I like the idea of alien refugees and how they would be treated. (And I am sure everyone knows it really about South African apartheid, which it does a good job representing). A bit slow at points and drags on, but overall good storytelling and a beautiful movie. 4 out of 5.
And now keeping with the districts to throw in a random find from Netflix Watch Now.
District B13 - This is a French action movie. Another movie about walled off districts, this time in France. Where in the future to combat excessive crimes, and where the local authorities have just given up, they start walling off and pulling out of the worst slums. Where a super-cop and a jailed member from inside must go back in to defuse a nuke that a local gang has acquired. The idea seems a bit silly, but it is a surprisingly good movie with a lot of the acrobatic fighting leading to some very impressive fight scenes. The main charters are likable and play their roles well. The ending is a bit of a twist, but not hard to figure out, though it still makes for what I thought ti be a fun climax. Well worth a watch, especially if you have Netflix and can stream it. 3 out of 5.

Go! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0139239/)
I find this movie to be outrageously funny! On IFC this month. The cast is amazing. Best scenes, for me, are the "Cop" scenes.:D 11:14 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0139239/) Another story with what seems to be a lot of sub plots going on, but they all come together, at 11:14!
Also on IFC this month.
The Libertine (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375920/) The Earl Of Rochester debauches his nose off, but keeps his sense of humour. You name it; he did him/her.
Johnny Depp may be one of the few people to look good without half his face. But the movie really is about having a "fuck it" attitude and the price one pays for that. Also on IFC.

I saw Go at the theater when I was in high school. I remember liking it quite a bit, but part of that was liking who I brought...
I finally saw the latest Indiana Jones movie (crystal skull or something like that). Spielberg must have forgotten a lot of what used to make those movies awesome. It wasn't even good enough to say "more of the same". It looked like a movie that had been made by Disney instead, but not even to their standard. Annoying silliness replaces the well placed comic relief of the previous movies. The primitive architecture, traps, riddles, devices used on the set were nowhere near as creative, interesting, or exciting of those past. The annoying love story didn't fit or help the movie the way it did before, and worse yet, the discovery of Indiana's greaser son didn't seem to work or help the plot the way the Sean Connery family story did before either. The special effects were somewhat interesting and made it so that the movie didn't flat out suck, but after seeing the older ones, this one was far below the standard that had been set. The bar was set too high in the past, and this half-assed attempt at creating a decent sequal seems to hurt the series.

I think it would have been a little optimistic to expect that Indiana Jones wouldn't be worn out in your mind, even if Crystal skull didn't suck.
I have been on sort of a TV kick lately. 24 has new episodes. I have watched all the Seasons of 24. This one is pretty good so far. Like Indiana Jones, I think this series needs a decent burial soon. The last season of Lost comes when I never watched anything after Season 1. I watched the season premiere and was still lost. This show never grabbed me. All of the seasons are on free on Hulu now, but keeping track of the plot line seems more a chore than fun.
I have been sorta picking at this cheapo MGM DVD set of old John Wayne movies. They were Expendable, Flying Leathernecks, Operation Pacific and Back to Bataan. It was worth the $7. Nice prints.

It's a decent vampire movie, but it takes on a lot of story lines found elsewhere, e.g. vampires having other non-human, non-vampire enemies just like the Blade trilogy. There are better vampire movies out there, but this one wasn't bad I suppose.

Life is no day at the beach for these two women. I think it's a great small movie. The acting is semmless. And you become aware of how people can end up doing things they would never normally would have thought to do, because they need the money. It's that base.

Goldfinger (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058150/)
There aren't too many movies from 1964 that benefit from Bluray, but this is one of them. Sean Connery is young. "Q" is young. Yep. Bond destroys the bullet proof, ejector seat Aston Martin and then has to thaw Pussy Galore. Goldfinger has everything a Bond movie needs and points out the moral of the James Bond stories. When you are a bad girl, you'll have just about enough time to bang Bond before you get painted gold or have your head chopped off by the Korean assassin. This movie does special effects the old fashioned way and the consumption of brick house figured girls, ammo, and explosives is opulent.
It's probably been 20 years since I revisited this one. The last time was likely on bleary cable or VHS. Goldfinger holds up pretty good for being more than 40 years old. The print on the BD release is outstanding.
------
Fargo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382026/) is fun. Especially the performance of Frances McDormand as the perky, quirky, pregnant, small town cop investigating a staged kidnapping.

How much Travolta can a guy stand when all his roles are shades of Pulp Fiction? I really liked the 1974 version of Pelham.
Watching Travolta foam at the mouth one more time didn't do it for me. Pelham is a great story, but the 2009 movie covers that up and makes it a formula action movie starring formula hyper-violent psycho John Travolta. I guess I'm just Travolta'd out. Maybe he should do a movie .... something to do with puppies or bunnies without him eating them....
Watch the 1974 version if you haven't seen it. Really. It's one of the best movies ever made. I'll admit that could have something to do with my reservations about 2009 Pelham.

An Inconvenient Truth
Amount of time spent belaboring the viewer with a problem:
about 1 hour, 34 minutes
Amount of time spent giving suggestions on what you as the viewer can do to solve the problem:
about 2 minutes
It's really sad that these kinds of movies are like this when they could have been so effective at helping spread awareness of solutions and hope rather than guilt and despair. I see them on both ends of our political scene, and I wish someone would just step up and fill the void.
Gore could have spent about half or even a generous 2/3 making his point about the problem and spent the other half or 1/3 focusing on what people can do to help solve said problem. That would have made the movie great, but sadly this wasn't the case.

I liked it too, but I guess I can see RoH's point, if I were to watch too many Costner movies, I might get sick of them too; luckily I haven't. This is true (for me at least) with a lot of actors though, especially people like Ben Stiller, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, and probably a few others too, where you might get me to enjoy a couple of their movies (small doses at a time), but not too many.

Skip it. Too many stupid annoying things that wouldn't actually happen, even though the movie tries to make it look like they could. Story was lame and acting mediocre at best. The ending was just sorta random (not suspenseful or anything cool like that) and left you curious as to what the writer wanted to accomplish; sorta like running out of gas in the middle of nowhere when you didn't really have a purpose or destination for driving in the first place.

It was ok for what it was. The DVD was a free library rental, damaged at chapter 12 of 13 where 13 was just credits. Sometimes with old DVD's, they've de-laminated. Look through them in a bright light. You'll see holes. That sucks. End of DVD.
They thought DVD's would last for a zillion years. If you have backed up old home movies on DVD, you probably better back up the backup. In real life DVD/DVD+-R lasts between 4 years and a zillion years, and there is no way to tell what it's gonna be.
I've gotten scratches out with a little gel (only use gel) toothpaste, water and your finger. You don't need to grind the scratch off. Circular motions across the scratch. Just dull it to make it less glossy. Rinse good. Dry good. Has worked on some nasty scratches.

Checking the Netflix queue and it turns out I haven't watched too many movies as of lately. Mostly because I just finished off the second series of Hustle. So, let's interrupt the normal movie reviews for a British television review (from an American).
Hustle - A BBC series about a group of grifters (con artists), which I got into after going though the first two series of the American Leverage. Which are somewhat similar (though Hustle doesn't bother with making theme the good guys, the cons in Hustle are all for their own profit). But so far I am loving this show. I like the whole setup of the con, which is usually nor fully explained until after the climax. Id you are unfamiliar with either show, it is a bit like the Oceans 11 series. And half the fun is trying to figure out what really is happening, and not what they are letting you to believe is happening. Really looking forward to the following seasons. (Though I am a bit worried about the American/AMC influence and cast changes). But for at least the first two series, it is a strong (TV wise) five out of five.
But I did catch one movie...
Extract - I like Mike Judge and will watch anything he does. (Yes, I am one of "those" fans of Office Space). This was alright, I suppose. Not great, but not horrible. It got some chuckles here and there, but nothing really stands out as amazing. Not a 90 minutes I regret, but nothing that is that memorable either. (Which is why this review is light on details). A meh... 3 out of 5.

Odd Girl Out
I think this gives a pretty realistic view of some of the shit that goes on in the adolescent girl world. It covers some of the non-physical, but very damaging effects of verbal and cyber bullying. I plan on showing it as a discussion and project-idea piece to my 8th graders. It's mostly well done.
Mean Girls
This is the first one I tried for the same purpose, but decided against it after seeing Odd Girl Out. Mean Girls covers high school cliques and their problems but is less realistic, more hollywood oriented, and less focused on what I'm trying to cover, so I don't plan on showing it to my students in class.

Odd Girl Out
I think you should use Carrie instead. Odd girl out seems like one of those movies that would want to make me gouge my eyes out with a fork. Well, the best I can hope for is a significant measurable reduction in documented bullying incidents, and I think that this and other things might help if handled right. I haven't seen Carrie yet, so I should check that out. I'm just using the movie to help students identify what it is and what it can become if not handled early on, then I go into appropriate ways of handling it. I use it together with ideas/material borrowed from the OLWEUS program (http://www.clemson.edu/olweus/) and the Stop Bullying Now program (http://www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov/kids/). Both of those have good and bad points in my opinion, so I just sorta mix that stuff with my own stuff (e.g. peer mediation program) to best fit our setting. Students will then create and act out skits of their own showing how to handle common bullying situations and present them to 6th and 7th graders. I'm hoping this will teach them how to handle most of it on their own, and to bring it to my attention early if they can't. I don't think it'll eliminate adolescent bullying altogether, but I do hope and expect to see good measurable outcomes.

Hustle used to be great.
I think it went down hill after the 3rd or so series sadly. (Character changes, writing etc)
I used to really enjoy watching it.
Also worth watching would be Coupling (The original UK version), which has no relation to Hustle but I also enjoy it.
Anyway, I just watched the extremely manly, gritty action packed, Alice In Wonderland, because I'm extra manly and cool. (Or my mate actually wanted to see it and were going to meet up with a girl he works with + friends, who actually went to a different cinema and didn't tell us until we were basically at the other one.)
Ramblings copy/pasted from the counting thread:
Well as you can see it wasn't a long film.
Pacing was constant, no surprises along the way.
I still don't like watching stuff in 3D, needs a higher frame rate - I know that would cost more to produce though, also the 30% darker issue due to the glasses and your brain thinking you can look anywhere because it thinks it's real and then you catch your self out trying to focus on a blur.
Compositing software/techniques still have a long way to go before stuff looks actually seamless IMO.
The white queen isn't as hot as Alice.
It wasn't hugely entertaining to me.
Some things/chars had assumed importance with no real reason why so.
It felt wishy washy in places.
I'm fed up with over saturated visual styles.
It was like seeing a plate of food and knowing what it tastes like before you get to eating that part. (And I've never read the book.)

Carrie! About a girl (Sissy Spacek) who gets antagonized by her classmates and displays telekinetic abilities, more or less burning the prom down. It's R. It's also probably one of the best horror films ever made.
In the 1970's rulebook of high school horror films it says nice sweet girls don't get chopped up by Freddie, but all the horny, nasty, bad girls are candidates for chainsaw action.

Gridiron Gang.
A football movie. It shows juvenile criminals using football to transform from gang thugs to football jocks. It was worth the borrowing from a neighbor's renting (free for me), but it was nothing to write home about.

I went and saw Kick Ass. L... O.... L !!!!! Don't watch the trailer because it's got a scene you should just watch in the movie.
This sort of thing wouldn't ordinarily be my cup of tea, but I usually don't laugh out loud in a movie theater. I don't think anyone could help it.
I can't help wondering if the 11 year old girl who plays the femme fatale in this film will need counseling. If you are offended by sex, drugs, violence or language, you might want to skip this one. I think it's so funny it gets away with it. I just went to see this because I never saw a Nicolas Cage movie I hated. It was even funnier than Raising Arizona.

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day - I was a little worried having a sequel show up eight years later and not really do well at all in theaters. That being said, this is clearly a cult classic and the sequel will probably fall into the same category. Staying away from any spoilers, I have to say the ending is just amazing. The mount of retuning cast is quite impressive and the addition of Julie Benz was quite awesome and she tool the mantle of the FBI Agent quite well. (I guess she has a thing for serial killers). If you haven't seen the first, this will make no sense to you at all. If you have seen the first and feel it is one of those college cult classics then it's a five out of five.
How to Train Your Dragon - I think 3D is a lame gimmick and it used to try to sell bad movies. This movie is far from a bad movie, but the 3D still feels like a gimmick, so if you see it in 2D you aren't gonna miss anything. Except for the occasional boat, projectile or dragon coming right for you. But the story is excellent, the humor is funny and the voice acting is near perfect. As an adult with no children I toughly enjoyed this movie. But because of the 3D wank... four out of five.

Jakob The Liar (http://retrovision*****freevideo/jakob-the-liar-1999/) is a freebie on Crackle. Robin Williams plays a jewish man in the Warsaw ghetto during WWII. What would a movie with such themes be without Alan Arkin? He's in it too.

Really funny!! No, really!!! :D
Time for catching up...
The Informant & The Men Who Stare at Goats - Can I review two movies at the exact same time? Yes. All the advertisements made this movie look like it was supposed to be a comedy, which seemingly was missed on me. Sure there were a few humorous moments, but nothing really stood out as being all the funny. It had an interesting story, but in the end it was a dialog and exposition heavy story that just really failed to entertain. Even with the big star as the odd but lovable character who just never seemed quite right, it was hard to really care for him or feel for his story. Needless to say, I found myself fast forwarding a lot though this movies. I am gonna have to give it a two out of five.
Iron Man 2 - Knock it off with the crazy character additions. Iron Man 2 was a movie of too may characters with not enough screen time. At least this movie seemed to have only one main villain (though there is the rich guy / villain financier. When will they ever learn...) But half this movie felt like a setup for the Avengers and not Iron Man. (Though that did get us Scarlett Johansson in skin tight black outfits kicking ass, I guess it isn't all that bad). But it really felt like a lot of diffrent characters all fighting for screen time. That being said, it was freakin' awesome. Amazing action scenes, good addition of comedy and a lot of delving into Stark's dark side. Well worth seeing in the theaters and not waiting for the Bluray. Four out of five.

Yeah, the goats movie was pretty lame.
I went and saw the last Shrek in 3d. I have seen some critical reviews over a thin plot. I didn't choose an animated fairy tale for a complicated plot. It was a little predictable. Fairy tales are. Shrek was colorful and fun. The 3D was well done. It made me LOL a couple times. 4/5.
I liked the latest Iron Man installment. Again, you could pick at the plot, but it was fun. 6/10.
Neither of these made it less than fun to drink Coke and eat 40 weight oil with popcorn in it.

I think I would really like to see One Hour Photo.
Tonight Renee watched 6 Days 7 Nights and I caught most of it while I was re-imaging and reinstalling programs to a friend's laptop. The story was fine, but there were too many unlikely events to make it seem believable. The characters were empty handed in the middle of the wilderness, found a wrecked Japanese WWII plane (believable), but somehow were able to hacksaw it's pontoons off, without going back to their own wreck first (the movie has no explanation on how this was possible - not believable)... Many other scenes had this sort of thing, too many and too distracting. A few would have been fine, but this was too much. I should stick with documentaries and historical fiction. I'm too damn picky for regular fiction.

I went to the theater for True Grit. The script was an 8, the acting was a 9  The end is a little disappointing. I also saw Tron, which I would give a non-enthusiastic "okee dokey". It's really hard to make SciFi movies that are worth a damn. By SciFi standards, Tron gets a little more of a break. It is good eye candy.... 6/10. It needs the RealD to take full advantage of that.
I bought a $10 box set of Irwin Allen movies: Fantastic Voyage, The Lost World, The Towering Inferno and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Cool. I watched "Family Guy: It's a Trap!". ^ I've seen A Beautiful Mind, which, as a movie isn't bad at all. But, Ron Howard completely "whitewashed" and even changed Nash's life. And since for eons he had trolled around Princeton, I will tell you for a fact, he doesn't vaguely resemble Russell Crowe, and would have preferred to date your dad rather than your mom, Because even if a guy can have sex with a woman, that don't make 'em straight. Also, it's never brought up how Nash had a kid with a nurse way back in the day, and then abandoned both of them. But Ron Howard makes pretty movies. They may have nothing to do with reality, but they make one feel good. Still strong performances by a good cast.

Ballistic (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308208/)
It's what it's title says it is. Extremely low on plot, extremely high on martial arts, guns, and explosions. If you know, understand, and agree to this ahead of time, it's worth watching. I kinda knew ahead of time, so I was ok with it, but many critics list it as one of the worst movies ever made.

Another 5/10 movie is Battle: LA. A race of liberal eco-conscious aliens try to take over Los Angeles. They are very "green" aliens in that everything they do is powered by water, therefore they have an extremely low carbon footprint. If you look close, you'll see the alien attack craft have "Change you can believe in" bumper stickers. You can tell these aliens were just trying to take over the planet for our own good. US marines from Camp Pendleton take offense, ignoring the properly indoctrinated grade school kid, who thinks "They just want to talk".
It sort of reminds me of Starship Troopers.... you know... the movie with Denise Richards most memorable performance... but it is a more serious movie. That is, if you can call a movie where shit blows up non-stop for two hours serious.

I just can't seem to like his acting. It's to the point where just seeing his face makes me want to leave or turn off the TV. I keep thinking about that recording where he was acting like a total dick by abusively scolding a stage hand for next to nothing. I see bits and pieces of that come out in his acting too. He just reminds of of the kind of cocky douche that needs his teeth punched down his throat. I already somewhat noticed it, but after that stage hand incident, I just stopped watching his stuff.

No one deserves to be treated like that. Nobody. He questions a person's professionalism while dropping f-bombs and acting completely unprofessional himself. I refuse to support anything related to him and I don't believe he deserves any credit for what he does if that's the way he does it. People like that should lose their career and found guilty of harassment. I know if I did that on the job I would get both of those consequences, and he should be no different.

In order to confuse our cold war enemies, multiple James Bonds are released on the world. A cameo of Woody Allen playing Jimmy Bond and facing a firing squad... priceless...
A training program for the new "Bonds" to not be tempted by the wiles of 1966 babes.... funny...

I mean to each their own, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion (which for a matter of record, I happen to respect).
But I do not agree with you at all on this. This movie, in my opinion, is nothing short of sheer brilliance. It's a plain and simple mind fuck on so many levels (literally). I like movies that do that.
I last watched 300 on blu-ray. I'll leave the comments about the movie alone and just comment on the blu-ray (I mean, the movie mindless entertainment at best, just like comic books, from which it was based. What more were you expecting).
The blu-ray quality of this movie blew. Fucking grainy to say the least. A very poor show on this one. You are better off with the dvd. Only reason why I bought it was it was $10. I've got a thing; if I can find a blu-ray of a dvd I have for less than $10 I'll buy it. If not, too bad. This one was a bad gamble.

So far, none of the major horse movies have disappointed me. I've always found them to be a safe bet for a rental. Seabiscuit, Flicka, Hidalgo, Secretariat, Black Beauty, Black Stallian, War Horse, etc. were all pretty good and worth a watch.
Yesterday I went out to see Red Tails (story about Black WWII fighter pilots) with some family members that had made the trip to visit us. It was ok, and a good film for the big screen. It was worth the drive, time, and ticket price to see it at the movie theater, and normally I feel robbed when I go to a theater. Get off your ass and see it. You won't say it was the best movie you ever saw, but you might agree that it was worth it. I don't get out much, but I finally did for this, and it was alright.

No kidding. I don't buy candy and pop anymore. I go out for dinner first. It's about the same money. The ticket price isn't that bad. It's $12 for a coke and popcorn that's a killer. $12 buys pretty good dinner.

I saw Tangled in 3d. This sort of thing probably wouldn't be my normal cup of tea, but it was so beautiful. Terrific eye candy and a gentle story... how could you go wrong?

Blue Steel. It's on Netflix. Jamie Lee Curtis as a cop. Not bad.

That movie was a riot. I love it when Johnny Depp shoots the chef because his carnitas are too good.
