I hurt my shoulder on Friday playing football with the kids. (I was trying to make a touchdown and got tackled bad).

My shoulder has had sharp pains for a few days now and aspirin is not helping. Any suggestions?

Where exactly on your shoulder? Does it hurt all the time, or just when you move it?

Sounds like you strained the muscle or ligaments - nothing serious. Just rest it and it'll sort itself out.

When I injure myself I usually just leave it, I take pain to its extreme. 3 years ago I was cutting wood with a bow saw
http://www.premiumknives.com/knifefiles/Felco_Pruners/Tina_Bantam_Bow_Saw_T-900.jpg and I slipped and cut very deep into my thumb. I had the flu at the time and it would stop bleeding until two hours after the inciddent. But I didn't tell anyong about it. There was another time when I rolled my ankle badly and told noone, but I wouldn't take this advice, if it hurts continulousy then go to a doctor. If not then rest it and it will heal.

ok, I will put heat on it. It is in my shoulder blade and runs down half way my right arm. It hurts all the time.

I am sure I will be fine, it will just take time for it to heal. I am thinking of going to the doctors if it does not heal up in the next few days.

That's a beter description - it's a muscle strain. Sounds like you weren't warmed up at th etime. Take it from someone who has had this injury time and time again - heat, don't lift your arm above your head, and rest it for a few days. There isn't a thing that the doctor can do, only tell you the same thing and charge you $40 for the pleasure of doing so.

I'm so sorry Missy. There's some really good advice in this thread. I've got a migraine right now that's preventing clear thought, but when I can focus better I'll do some research and add anything I find that hasn't already been mentioned.

One thing to know: Are you having any numbness or shooting pains that go down your arm or torso? Either of those could be a sign of nerve damage, and a reason to see a doctor right away. If not either one, then it's most likely a muscle sprain, as has already been said.

Whatever it is, I hope you feel better, hon.

(BTW...This means we can't use the parachute and chandelier until your shoulder has full range-of-motion.) ;)

lol I did, too :D.

On a more serious note, missy, I one of the things that I've noticed that every post I've seen so far has failed to mention is the actual dosage that a chiropractor/DO (osteopathic doctor) would recommend in your situation.

Frequently after having surgery, the doctor will write a *prescription* for pain medication that exceeds the maximum amount of medicine that without a doctor's approval a person could self-administer. Frequently the surgeon will explain that ______ mg Ibuprofin will most likely be enough to relieve the pain, but if not, he's given a prescription to use in case you needed more.

The package of Ibuprofin says take 1 tablet every x hours, and if 1 tablet doesn't help, 2 may be used. The maximum recommended dosage is 6 tablets in 24 hours.

Each ibuprofin tablet is 200 mg (painkillers require a much higher number of mg to work compared to, for example, stimulants like ritalin, dexedrine, etc.

Chiropractors generally suggest that in addition to the recommended treatments (heat or whatever else they suggest, such as stretches (depending on what's being treated and what stage of healing you're in)) that if the pain still bothers you, to take 3 tablets every x hours (same number of hours as on package).

This is still quite safe, but if you need more than 3 Ibuprofin tablets every x hours, I would call a doctor just to be on the safe side before going to a higher dosage. I will not post the true safest max as it is alarmingly high (to say the side effects are horrible is an understatement), but I can say 3 for a sprained muscle/overstretched tendons/ligaments is considered normal.
