Hi, I was looking over the internet for a host that allows you to have a now playing image or sig hosted on their servers. Apparently I found some but they currently stopped new signups.
Now my question, does anyone know a good place to start where to learn how to do this on my own. I have a fair knowledge of PHP, I have a host that supports GD. I just want to know what or where should I start.
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

Check Bilbo's sig, he's using something called Audio Scrobbler, not sure of the URL.

Last time I checked, Audio-Scrobbler didn't have an image generating script, but we'll have to ask Russ on this one (Russ works there).
Anyway, it's not hard. Have a PHP page that you send variables to which in turn writes to your database. Then just have another document that produces an image.
For that, try this tutorial (http://www.phpfreaks.com/tutorials/105/0.php).
For everyone else, use gerpok.com (http://gerpok.com) - it's PacketCollision (http://forums.winamp.com/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=122479)'s project (seems he's never posted here so most of you probably don't know him) who wrote some of the Audio-Tracker code and is recognized by Kaboon (WA forums admin and AT owner). :)

thanks, i actually figured how to make one. now i am wondering how to detect if winamp is closed or not playing? how will you return variables to server?

If you do have a PHP-enabled server, you can use Audioscrobbler (http://www.audioscrobbler.com/) and this script (http://wiki.audioscrobbler.com/index.php/NP_scrobbler).
Or else, try www.listen-to.com :).

i was able to make my own but i am using time differences to check if winamp is open or not. im sure there is another method.

I'm too stupid to make my own picture for Viralsound so I used someone else's.

That's how AT does it. Submits length of song in the DoSomething string and then compares to Unix timestamp of submission vs. current Unix timestamp and wa-la.
Although AT/Gerpok pwnz your's with it's cool cache system by Russ. :p

I'm not sure if CPUKiller is willing to confirm this, i will have to speak with him, but we may make the viralsound engine open source (appart from the viralsounds URI's - don't want flooding) so that you can use viralsound plugins in all the major media players and create your own plugin that sends the data to your server instead of ours. And supply the PHP code. As i said, i haven't asked CPU, but will do when i next have chance.

Hi,
I have an account on VS, but I have some webspace and bandwidth available. I just wondering is that script you have mentioned has been released? So that I can host it on my own server and I can customize with my own fonts. Thanks.
Cheers,

Any of these display the radio station you're listening to? I never listen to mp3's, just stream, and I know gerpok doesn't do too well with streaming audio
