View Full Version : WINAMP will not start

My system specs are in my signature.

I have been using Winamp for months now, with NO problems. Out of the blue, I try to open it and it doesnt start. In program manager, "winamp equalizer" is shown as (Not Responding).

Shortly after, my screen will lock up.

I did the complete uninstall/re-install twice with no luck, and I tried installing the recommended win98se patch, still the same thing. No error message, nothing, it just doesnt start and I have the above in the task manager.

Any ideas? I realy liked using winamp.

Help please.

A few questions...

Is this (http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/products.php?categories=1&model=6) your mobo?

1) Why are you overclocking the XP1700+ so much?
Default FSB = 133 MHz, clock speed = 1463 MHz
Overclocking to 2515 MHz is quite excessive methinks, regardless of what SoftMenu says/does.

2) Why are you running Windows 98 on a machine designed for WinXP?

3) Are you using the onboard sound chip (nForce/Soundstorm) or a pci soundcard?

4) What version of Winamp are you using?
Latest and only supported version is 5.02

5) Have you installed any extra 3rd-party plugins?

not sure, but "Winamp Equalizer" suggests Winamp3 to me, or a plugin... ?! hmm

Yes, thats my mobo. and;

1) I overclock because I want to. Its a hobby I like, and it tests stable (been running this way for a year), and its not the problem nor your concern. nuff said.

2) I haven't had the opportunity to upgrade yet, but again, thats irrelevant to my problem and again, not your concern.

4) Latest version, 5.01. I have been using it for months now as I said, the problem just started.

5) No.

"winamp equalizer" may suggest Winamp3 to you, but you are wrong. I have never used winamp3.

Can anyone else offer any actual HELP maybe?

Not the issues you were seemingly chastizing me over. No, quite frankly those particular things are NOT your concern, and have nothing to do with the problem, as I have been using winamp for months with no problems whatsoever.

This may have resulted from another software install, or similar glitch, that I do not know. But whether or not I should still be using win98se or that I overclock is irrelevant.

The only part of your entire post that was even close to the mark was the 3rd party plugins question, to which I replied no.

I'm sorry, I am new here, but not new to this kind of forum. I guess I am just tired of asking a question in a forum (any forum) and having a bunch of judgemental questions fired back at me that are nothing more than opinion and of no possible help.

And as I said in my intial post, I tried the uninstall/re-install procedure a few times and it was no help. And I followed the directions the the letter.

yo! you want a full on forum flame?? you're asking for it!

Egg is just trying to be helpful with the scant details you gave him. he does this on his own time and for free. he was not chastising you, he was offering his insight. try to be appreciative.

I think johnny missed the irony of having DJ Egg trying to help him out

If you had toned down the attitude, and maybe, just maybe asked a little more nicely, you might have recieved the help you need.

He's just giving suggestions on what NOT to do... obviously you want it your way. But don't say you were never warned when your computer becomes a puddle of molten silicon. Strangely, you've given us quite a bit of info in your signature that is completely useless, and is none of anyone's business really... so why bitch that he shouldn't be talking about it since it's no one's business? Change your signature if it's no one's business.

Also - watch out for temperature changes in your house, since your system's already running at a faster speed/higher temperature than it should. It might've lasted a year so far, but if your cooling system in your house goes out and it's hot enough, and your heatsinks in your system aren't enough... well, goodbye computer.

The fact that your system is stable with everything you might have on your computer right now, does NOT mean everything else will also work. The fact that your computer "suddenly" started crashing in Winamp, should be taken as a clue to step off the throttle a bit.

I'm willing to bet quite a bit of money that Winamp will work if you run your CPU at stock speed.

At least try it... All it takes is a reboot.

@johnny6722:

So go find the fucking answer yourself, Egg knows what he's talking about. He is one of the two best TS guys here, so shove it.

Also, don't bullshit about your overclock, it's impossible with that kind of cooling. :)

Its not impossible you stupid illiterate fuck. If you knew anything about overclocking then you would know your full of shit. I simply gave all my info because invariably someone asks for something you didn't give the, so I put my system specs in my sig as an FYI. Why the hell would I lie about what my overclock is in this fucking forum anyway? You dumb bastard. Talk about the typical internet tough guy. You would piss your pants if we met in person you worm. I bet your father wished he had a son, did'nt he?

As for the rest of you pathetic little scumbags, even though everything works fine, I guess since I have a problem with the wonderful WINAMP, that must be indicative of a severe problem with my system. Coiuldnt possibly be a program error could it?

oh yes, assmaster (what an appropriate name), I had already re-set everything to stock timings in the bios just to make sure that wasn't it, and its not. Regardless of whether or not I am overclocked or stock, the exact same problem persists. And considering I can run any game, program (including autocadd), etc...EXCEPT winamp, would lead me to beleive it is a software problem with this bullshit program.

I had recently updtaed my video drivers and that could have caused a problem somewhere. But its definately SOFTWARE related.

BTW, how pathetic are you people to have a forum built around a multimedia program? Good lord talk about no life.

You guys go finish gluing this months playboy together, I'll find help elsewhere, or use a different program.

Fuck off.

wow... some people are so inconsiderate. i can only wish i got here earlier.

while i agree with him that it probably isn't hardware related, i think DJ might have been on to something when asking abouth his mobo. he was very specific on that one. johnny should realise that if he just played along a little bit, the problem prob would have been solved fairly quickly instead of a flame war. enough people on here overclock and mod out there system that help would have been found.

it is actually possible to OC an AthlonXP 1700+ to 2.5GHz if you manage to get one of the "magic" ones. I shudder to think what sort of wind tunnel his case is if he's only using air cooling on it though. It must sound like a Boeing 747 revving up :D

Disabling the Sonic burn/rip plugin from the "Audio Files Support" category during install will fix this issue. The bug has been isolated and we are now trying to narrow down the problem to get it fixed.

what he fails to realise is that, although the cpu is cool enough, when overclocked, cpus (and gpu's alike) tend to glitch a hell of a lot, especially when overclocked as much as his.

for instance, have any of you overclocked your graphics card using powerstip or EXPERTool? you notice, that although cool, your display will start going garbled, and get very glitchy. This is essentially what is happening to his cpu, but you notice it in program crashes and runtime errors.

Jumper001

Prime95 uses some of your CPU time to do calculations involving large prime numbers.

It's normally a distributed computing program, but in 'torture test' mode it eats up 100% of the CPU doing calculations it already knows the result to; when your CPU messes one up its a good bet its glitching.

The funniest thing is that if you read one of the linked topics above, this is a known bug and is being worked on. If the guy had just been nicer......

Was this problem solved? I am running the latest winamp and i have started to have this out of the blue. Its not a hardware issue of stability, its definately software since it happens every time you start up winamp. Winamp will lock up and will display the stupid windows error reporting box. Does anyone else get this.

Oh btw i think i shutdown my computer by turning off the power, perhaps winamp has some file corrupted?

I just downloaded/installed Winamp on a WIndows 7 machine and it won't open. Machine specs: Toshiba E105-S1802 C2D Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P7450@2.13GHz RAM 4096 MB (4 GB) Video: Mobile Intel 4 series Express Chipset Family version 8.15.10.2302 Sound: Realtek High Definition Audio=6.0.1.5904, High Definition Audio Device version= 6.1.7601.17514 WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM.

I saw the exchange with the original poster and I have no such illusions on my ability. I simply am open to any suggestions. I have no 3rd party addons or anything. Togtally stock. Is it possible Windows Media Player can prevent another player from setting up as the new default player? You know how Microsoft works...

Like stvmia I too have just down loaded Winamp and after using it once I cannot get it to start. Task manager says it's running but zippo on the screen. I am running it on a Dell Inspiron 1564 laptop loaded with Windows 7.

Batter Pudding

It will not be windows media player causing the problem. (@Stvmia)

I'd start with a reinstall of Winamp. Can't harm. (Make sure you kill off the old Winamp from Task Manager first).

Next up - we need that list of plugins.

Hi You can search on a site that I have an old version of winamp and try to install winamp 5 and see if that solves the problem. So long my friends
