View Full Version : 5.02 advertised ripping speed

This isn't a life and death issue, but what the hell, I have some spare time, and this is the Discussion forum - right?
The advertised Winamp ripping claims speeds up to 48x. The previous paragraph in the ad (Encoding) says something about "ripping into mp3 format" - which would imply that it is possible to rip AND encode at up to 48x.
Isn't this a bit misleading? Sure, 48x for ripping alone is achievable, but fast encoding (say 128 kbps CBR) on a pretty high speed computer would by itself run no more than 15x. So, for this scenario, the rip + encode process would have a speed of maybe 12x to 13x.
So, if I'm right about this, isn't Nullsoft maybe creating a few dissatisfied customers out there?

It says speeds "up to" 48x. That means it isn't always going to. And especially with a MP3 encoder. :)

Yeah, I know that, but it's just not possible to get anywhere near 48x for rip AND encode.

It's called buisness. Start reading the Microsoft website, you will see similar things in every damn paragraph. :P

Encoding/Ripping are mentioned seperatly, and its pretty straight forward as to speed variences based on your system. A lot better then product info elsewhere.
Unrestricted CD Burning — Winamp Pro enables you to burn your favorite music compilations at your computer's full potential. Once registered, Winamp Pro will allow you to burn your CDs at speeds up to 48x, 9 times the speed of Winamp 5! (Actual speeds may differ, depending on your computer's specifications.)
MP3 Encoding — With Winamp Pro, you can rip all your favorite music CDs into the industry leading MP3 format. When all your songs are encoded in MP3, it provides you the freedom to play them in all MP3 capable hardware and software media players.
Unrestricted CD Ripping — Buying Winamp Pro enables you to convert all of your favorite music CDs into digital files at you computer's maximum potential. Once registered, Winamp Pro can rip your CDs at speeds up to 48x, 9 times the speed of Winamp 5! (Actual speeds may differ, depending on your computer's specifications.)

anyone who bought the pro version for ripping audio at high quality and speed is a fool. QCD does it for free.

So does CDex and EAC, we're all aware of it here. Trust me, nullsoft wouldn't charge dollaz for their software if they had to, but the ripping and burning is in 3rd party license department and so they have to be paid per-copy.

Except I don't use MP3, I use Ogg Vorbis (which is free), and I don't use the Sonic CD ripping engine (I use ASPI). They should allow you to rip full-speed with a free encoder and a free driver, shouldn't they? :weird:

Draders23, IMHO that was a really stupid way to promote QCD. In any case, I will never rip my music without some sort of secure algorithm, which leaves EAC and cdparanoia.
Many people buy the PRO version for brand loyalty, anyway.
