A music forum without a New Order thread is like a CD without a hole. So, you're favourite album(s) anyone?

Brotherhood (1986)

Close second:
Movement (1981)

I don't really count Substance as an album, it's more of a 'Greatest Hits Part 1'. Factory being a weird label and all that.

Ah well, I don't care! I won't shed a tear.

If Substance is in then everyone would pick it. It stands head and shoulders above the rest. Blue Monday's a neo-synth classic, almost as good as Xymox - Stranger. Almost;)

Stuck in the 80's? Not really! I have a passion for the synth sound of the time, fortunately it's made a comeback. You must've heard of Ladytron, Miss Kittin and the Hacker, Fischerspooner, DMX Krew etc etc etc. It's the same sound but sexier. My year was 1991 when alternative bands crossed over into the mainstream. There was so much good music around.

NJK

i always found it a waste when alternative bands crossed over because they never reached there old level again (fine example is the simple minds) everything the made was so much more commercial and made to reach the charts.

i take it cylob you are from the uk
also orac must be from the uk why else call yourself after a computer from the blakes 7 series???? am i right orac???

That's true actually. I always tend to go off bands that become too big. With the early 90's, the whole alternative genre crossed-over, but the bands remained unchanged. Even the likes of Pop Will Eat Itself made it into the charts.

Back on topic...... Isn't the cover of Movement marvellous? It'd look great on a white wall, possibly in a dining room. New Order playing while you eat lunch. :)

Can you merge this with..... the other New Order thread.:D

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=150420&highlight=new+order

I'm torn between Movement and Brotherhood. If anything, Movement gets the nod. No, wait, Brotherhood. No, on second thoughts, Movement.:)

My favourite track is Blue Monday....

Twilightseer
27th February 2004, 14:07
Merging done :D I didn't know there existed such a thread :)

I'm currently on a New Order listening spree. Re-ripped all their studio albums and tucked them on a nice CD-R. I think all albums are really good, but my favourite has to be Technique. 9 songs, 9 gems, flawless from start to finish. Other faves are Low-Life and Brotherhood, awesome albums as well, and I'm warming up to Get Ready which I didn't even really like when it was released.

Now, tracks you dislike most :D One of mine is undoubtedly "The Village" on PCL. The music is OK, but the singing is so horrible it makes me laugh :D (fortunately, Sumner learnt to sang as albums went by).

Cylob
27th February 2004, 15:00
I can't think of any New Order fillers.....:D

But, how about some related albums....

Monaco - Music For Pleasure (1997)

Electronic - Eletronic (1991)

You all forget the Peel sessions disc
http://www.townsend-records.co.uk/acatalog/neworderbbcjohnpeelsess.jpg

My fave would have to be Technique, I lived in Manchester at the time it was released, it was like the second coming.

I bought mine the day of release, same day the Factory records building was decorated top to bottom in Technique billboard poster sized album covers, I have a photo somewhere at home.

/Side fact, I once stood Bernard Summner a drink at some club im Mcr, go me :D

Cylob
27th February 2004, 16:42
Jones, you bastard! But did Bernard take the drink or not? You'll probably never know....

I have a Peel Sessions disc (recorded '82, released '87), it has the standard Strange Fruit cover. Tracks:

1. Turn the Heater On
2. We All Stand
3. Too Late
4. 5-8-6

I prefer this version of 5-8-6 to any other. It's obviously the pre-cursor to Blue Monday. But, an awsome track.:)

Mr Jones
27th February 2004, 16:54
Yeah, he took it alright, bloody pop stars and their endless buckets of money scamming drinks off poor students :p He was polite though :)

I forget what it was he had, mind you I've forgot most of my time in Manchester, far too many ...
Clubs
Women
Drugs
:D

The peel sessions disc back there is two sessions in one, I only have the vinyl copy , but your right 5-8-6 is much better on that one.

/off to spin Technique...

I'm resurrecting this as I'm currently listening for the first time to the new NO album "Waiting for the sirens' call". My impression so far: nice, tracks for which most bands would kill but soundwise, it's very close to Get Ready and the surprise effect is sort of gone now.
Still, NO remains NO, ie much much better than the usual stuff :D

Cylob
16th March 2005, 10:00
I haven't got it. :( But I'll soon rectify that!

It seems NO have become Electronic (in the Twisted Tenderness vein). For me, what lets the show down is the percussion - it's no longer innovative. As you say 'seer, it's a predictable sound now. That edge, once a monolith, is smoother than a baby's bottom.

Perhaps the others should've stamped their authority!

No Bernard, get back down 'pub.

Twilightseer
16th March 2005, 10:05
Well, Cylob, I still think you'll dig the new album because indeed it's less rock and more electronic than Get Ready; it's also much more upbeat. I think they wanted to go back to the "Brotherhood" sound, which is good. It's a huge album by anyone else's standards but as I said, for NO fans, the surprise effect is gone. But anyone who doesn't know NO and listens to that album will probably be very impressed if they have any taste at all.
And again, I've only listened to it once, so my opinion may change over time :)

Btw, according to a review I've read, Gillian has officially left the band to be replaced with someone named Phil Cunningham.

Cylob
16th March 2005, 10:44
Phil Cunningham?!

So that's it then, their post-punk roots have come out in the wash.

As a twist of irony, there are new bands (such as Bloc Party, Ikon, Ikara Colt) that imitate the post-punk sound flawlessly. Quite a listen! IMO, it's all down to age. 20 = fresh, 30 = refined, 40 = pompous.

Thankfully I'm in the refined territory. Yay! Anyway, I'm looking forward to the album.

Today is New Order day for Jones, just loaded the entire back catalogue of albums onto my shiny new i-River for a long train journey I've got planned tomorrow, also includes the new album, which ranges from fantastic to garbage.

A real mixed bag, a lot of it reminds me of the glory days of Technique, some of it is just bland music that you wouldn't normally give a second listen to.

And yes, I've given it a good run, it's been on the fileshare networks for about a month now heh.

So far, I would say 7 (on the NO scale, which means about 12/13 by everybody else's standard). It's a solid album, better than Get Ready in my opinion.
I wonder though why they (Sumner?) keep marring (admire the pun ;) ) the album with tracks like Jetstream and above all Guilt Is A Useless Emotion: I want to hear Sumner singing, not a random female singer whose voice sounds like 10,000 others.
Weird.
It's still true that the surprise effect is gone and the album is very 'one-sounded'. But many bands would kill to produce such songs so I won't complain.
That being said, I have a question about New Order lyrics. How would you native English speakers would rate them? Sometimes, I think that Sumner really writes banal lyrics but the music is so brilliant that it doesn't bother me. It's strange.
Any opinion is appreciated.

Mr Jones
21st March 2005, 15:36
@'seer...

Why do they keep adding in female vocals?, it sells records, Jetstream is being lined up to be the next single, probably purely on the fact that the random female vocalist is the chick out of the Scissor Sisters,(REF (http://www.undercover.net.au/news/2005/feb05/20050228_scissorsisters.html)) who seem to be popular as hell over here, so they'll probably sell the record on the back of that, that and fact that sumner has a crap voice really :D

What amused me the most was, I read an interview with them that said they had left out about 7 or 8 tracks from the final album, because while they were good, they sounded too 'new ordery', I have to laugh as I heard Krafty on the radio while sat in a car park one Saturday afternoon and even before sumner had started to sing I said ' I bet you that's a new New Order track', and lo it was, it's the most New Ordery sounding track on the whole album, anyhow..

As for Phil Cunnigham joining them full time, only good things to say about that, he did most of the Get Ready tour and sessions anyhow, but as a full time member he's really contributed to the album, taking it off and making it sound different to other NO albums, yes, only good things to say here.

Fave tracks on it?, Krafty is a fine slice of music, title track is good, I also like Turn, which could have come straight off Technique, listen to the intro again and you can almost imagine him launching into 'It doesn't take a genius to tell me what I am', I also like Guilt is just another..., gonna be huge in the clubs over summer I reckon, once the remixers have got their hands on it.

Lyrics wise? , Sumner has always wrote absolute shit that make no sense at all, I've thought that for a long time, maybe he smoked too much puff or tripped on one to many happy pills, he's certainly no Burt Bacharach , that's for sure.

From my huge New Order fest on the train the other day, I'd still have to rate Technique as my fave album, followed probably by Lowlife and PC&L, the others would probably rank about the same, although hearing Get Ready again for the first time in a couple of years I actually found I enjoyed it more than I remember doing when it was released.

My faves would be Movement, Brotherhood & Technique. I'd stick Electronic/Electronic in there, after all it's much more New Order than Smiths. I'd also rank Monaco/Music For Pleasure, it has that New Order sound (right down to the vocals and dodgy lyrics).

I've listened to their new album once, and I can't be assed to play it again soon (crime against music)? Something's changed between Get Ready and Waiting for the Sirens' Call, it's called "Post-Rock". If you listen to the new single by "The Bravery" (for example), it makes latter-day New Order sound flatter than ever. They may be a great band with a great heritage (and a legacy), but they still have to compete for ears.

Thus, the battle is lost, draw the velvet curtains.

This is 2005.

The only exceptions are Blue Monday, World In Motion (purely coz it was for the England and all that, it's well gay otherwise) and their best effort 'Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Head'.

Most of the vocals on "Power, Corruption and Lies" verge on unbearable. Especially "The Village". It gets better on "Low Life" (still, Sumner sings horribly on "Face Up" for instance). And after that, it miraculously changes. Sumner has really learnt to sing over the years. His voice has never been better. But early New Order stuff is still good, musically. "Your Silent Face" and "Leave Me Alone", among others, are splendid songs...

Just for info: a 2-cd compilation of all NO singles called "Singles" (duh :D) is due for release on Oct 3rd. Apparently, it's going to include all the original single versions (cool for Temptation and Confusion).
Also, the next NO album is scheduled for July 2006 :)

Mr Jones
21st September 2005, 14:58
Question is, will that next new order album that's due July 06, be made up of the left overs from WfthSC?, I'd read a few interviews that said they'd recorded so much stuff for this album that they thought was really great that they could probably squeeze a second album out of all the leftovers.

Oh, and , another Singles collection?, how many is that?

Twilightseer
21st September 2005, 15:16
Well, I think that the next album will be a direct follow-up to "Waiting For The Sirens' Call" but I certainly won't complain, I like this album, even though it may be not as great as old-era New Order, it's still a thousand times better than what The Cure has turned into.

About the singles compilation, there was already Substance in 1987, which compiled all the singles they'd released until then plus the B-sides, usually as special edits or extended remix versions, there was "The Best Of" in 1994 and "International" in 2002, though they were not strictly singles compilations.
And there's also the "Retro" boxset released in 2002 as well, so yes, that makes a lot.

A complete B-sides/Rarities album would've been much better.

Mr Jones
21st September 2005, 15:23
Yeah, I agree, I actually like the bulk of Sirens, more so than I did 'get ready', which really only had a couple of stand out tracks, well ok, one....

Too many singles collection there, I'll stick to my own personal singles collection, most of them of them on scratchy old 12inch vinyl, the 30 minute Confusion is a classic and my personal fave, FAC93

Twilightseer
22nd September 2005, 08:44

They need to release that on CD asap!

Mr Jones
22nd September 2005, 09:31
Yeah, the original vinyl copy was huuuuuuge, it was like one long track, I think it was supposed to be 4 mixes over two sides, but side one just sounds like one mix.

That's why when substance was released back in '87 they recorded a new version of confusion for it as the original was just way way way too long to fit sensibly onto the album.

My fave band of all time!

Most listened to album is Substance, which first got me into them, but best albums:

1. Technique - Balearic classic! No fillers.

2. PC&L - Still sounds great and modern.

3. Low-life - Just great songs.

4. Brotherhood - NO in their rock phase and includes the 'uppiest' song ever, BLT!

5. Republic - Always feels a bit 'cold' to me, but still some good tracks on there.

6. WFTSC - Nothing ground-breaking hear (apart from Barney's new found obsession with Ragga) but shows they can still produce some great songs - Drac's Castle, Turn, WFTSC, Krafty and Hey Joe are my faves. Can't listen to Jetstream though.

7. Movement - Always found this hard to listen to at first, apart from In Between Days, sorry Dreams Never End, but have lately begun to appreciate it more.

8. Get Ready - Dissapointing, apart from the classic Crystal.

My favourite NO song is Temptation (the 12" version), which I believe is officially the best song in the world. Ever! It's just got that kind of euphoric feel to it, and always sends a shiver down my spine when the strummy guitars kick in. I believe Barney had dropped half a tab of acid during the recording and Hooky put a snowball down his back when he was singing som od the 'ooh ee ooh ee ooh' bits.

To top Mr Jones, I lived in Manc for 5 years and saw Barney in the Hacienda but didn't know what to say to him (he was leaning against one of the pillars for about 20 minutes, probably out of it).
We also bought Hooky and Rob Gretton a drink at the Paradise Factory.
I was once crossing the road near Granada Studios when Hooky was married to Mrs. Merton and he'd dropped her off and stopped his 4 x 4 (with a H100 KYS number plate!)to let me cross the road. I had to bow down to him and he gave me a honk!
My brother still lives in Manchester and we recently went to the 'Hacienda Classics' night at the Music Box where Hooky played for an hour or so and said hello.

So there!
