Does your Daughter have any third party plug-ins (for Winamp) installed?

While Winamp is not running try deleting the main.dat file in the media library folder (usually C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\ml). If that does not work try deleting the contents of the media library folder. If there are any media library playlists back them up by copying or moving them to another folder. Media Library playlists have a randomly generated filename.
Example: plf****.m3u (where **** represents a set of numbers and letters).

Unfortunately that will result in the lost of media library data. So your daughter will have to rescan the folders.

I have the exact same problem. I have the latest winamp installed on a fairly newly installed XP box. The extra plugins I have are the SQRsoft crossfade plugin and the SHOUTcast source plugin. I use the shoutcast source plugin through the sqrsoft crossfade plugin. I have been running this configuration with winamp2 for over a year previously, and I haven't encountered any problems then. The OS was also win98 back then, if that matters.

Anyway, it seems like many people have this problem, so it would be great if anyone could shed some more light on the cause and/or workaround of this problem.

There's all the fixes/workarounds (read whole thread)

As to what causes it.... no idea :/
No-one's been able to provide the exact reproduction instructions.
