View Full Version : Media Library Crash

I'm using winamp 5.03 on a Dell Latitude D505 laptop (WinXP Pro). I had no troubles until I tried the Internet TV feature recently. Winamp failed to establish a connection, but that's not the question actually. I spent just a couple of minutes in the Internet TV, and after that attempt a bug appeared in the Media Library. Now whenever I try to browse between Audio-Video-Playlists-etc. tree in the left part of the Media Library, it instantly crashes causing winamp to close. The message say an error occurred in gen_ml.dll. Without using the media library winamp is working OK.
I tried reinstalling as described here (deleting all registry entries, winamp.ini file and the program directory), but the problem remains in the new installation of winamp as well.
Winamp 2.91 does not have this problem.
I found a couple of similar posts here (for instance http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=179689&highlight=genml.dll) but all of them are unanswered.
Please advise what to do. Thanks.

Please install the Winamp5 Update, found here: http://www.nunzioweb.com/daz/waupdate/wa5update.exe
There are fixes with gen_ml.dll. Thanks!

I have the identical problem as sergei.k, I installed the update you posted but it makes no difference. I found that when it appears to crash (fails to load up info for the new window) if I open and close the Media Library it prevents it from crashing, Until I browse to a new section. Is there any working fix for this problem?

If the problem persists after a clean install (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?postid=1212729#post1212729), then I suspect something external to blame, because no-one here can reproduce the problem.
Always include relevant system specs (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=161361#specs),
and maybe post a HijackThis log...

I've tried almost a dozen clean installs, with varying installation options but the result is always the same.
I've made a system report using msinfo32, it's in the zip file attached to this post. It has all of my hardware info along with processes etc, it even has the error reports from the crashes themselves. If you can't open it run msinfo32 from the run box and try from there.

Please post a HijackThis log
(see "system specs" link in my post above for url/instructions).
I see more than just winamp.exe crash reports in your msinfo.nfo log.
Lots of opera, explorer, virtualdubmod and other crashes,
including subseven.exe and mlnet.exe
Is Morpheus (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=64964#morpheus) p2p installed?

No sharaza is the only p2p I have, explorer crashes all the time, I'm used to it. I've re-formatted and it still happens, opera seems to crash on certain sites and VdubMod crashes because of a decompresser error which usually takes explorer with it. I don't know what mlnet is but I've been using SubSeven on my home network as it's just about the easiest way to transfer files.
I think this is the file you want but if it isn't can you tell me how to generate it?

Hmm, there's nothing obvious in your HJT log.
This line indicates that the system has recovered from a crash.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
To disable the memory dump...
Right click on My Computer
Select: Properties > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery > Settings button.
At the bottom - under 'Write debugging information' - select 'None' from the drop-down menu.
Whilst you're in there, go to:
Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced tab.
Virtual Memory > Change
and increase the size of the Page File (for both C: & D: drives).
You might also want to test your RAM modules for any faults.
There's not much info via a google search for:
O21 - SSODL: SysTray - {E61B5E20-DE35-11CF-9C87-1579005127ED} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msc.cpl
Which Control Panel does this .cpl file represent?
You can find out usually by locating the file (C:\WINDOWS\System32\msc.cpl), right click > properties > version tab.
These three ActiveX Controls appear to be missing from the "C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files" folder:
O16 - DPF: {8B1BC605-C593-4865-8F5B-05517F0CD0BB} (MSSecurityAdvisorCD Class) -
O16 - DPF: {CE28D5D2-60CF-4C7D-9FE8-0F47A3308078} (ActiveDataInfo Class) -
O16 - DPF: {E77C0D62-882A-456F-AD8F-7C6C9569B8C7} (ActiveDataObj Class) -
You can use HJT to fix those
(checkmark those 3 entries only, and click "fix selected").
The only entry I'm not familiar with is:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Quick Macros] D:\Quick Macros\qm.exe
Though I assume you know what this is, yes?
Download, install and run Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org).
This will get rid of the "Alexa Related" entry
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
and will also detect and remove mlnet.exe and all related files.
Apart from all that, make sure you've installed all security/critical updates from windowsupdate
and make sure you have all the correct and latest drivers.
Also make sure ZoneAlarm is configured to allow full internet access to Winamp.exe
Winamp related settings:
Prefs > Media Library > Library Options tab:
Uncheck: "Display Info Viewer in media & album views"
Checkmark: "Do not allow media to auto switch to Now Playing"
Though I still recommend a clean install (and then install the update patch after).
There's also the possibility that some of the files you've downloaded with shareaza are corrupt, and Winamp is having a hard time reading them once you import them into the library.
After a clean install, but before you import your files into Winamp library, scan your mp3 dir for corrupted files with MP3Utility (http://www.geocities.com/mp3utility/), and remove any it reports as corrupt/damaged.
(note, geocities doesn't support 3rd-party download managers, à la GetRight).

Thanks for the detailed response, I've disabled the memory dump and upped the C:\pagefile.sys to a minimun of 1Gb and a max of 1.5, is there any need to create a swap file on the D: though? C: is almost exclusivly a windows partition.
I actually tested my RAM chips recently to try and track down a performance issue, I used Prime95's torture test and a program called memtest86 and neither showed any problems.
I have never encountered the msc.cpl file before and if I try to open it from run as I can all other CP files nothing happens, the file doesn't have a version tab though, I've attached it to this post, just remove the txt extension.
I've fixed the ActiveX Controls and Quick Macros is a small Macro program I've used for years, it's pretty harmless.
I've been using Spybot for a while and that Alexa entry keeps popping up, I think it's a 'misdiagnosis' as I've never had Alexa installed it must be from some other program. Although it didn't turn up on the scan I just ran (I have all the updates to it)
The Windows updates might be the problem though as I'm on a 56k and have never downloaded any of the 'large' ones, nor have I SP2 installed. The easiest option for me would be to wait for MS to produce another update CD.
I've denied Winamp any web access (no point on a 56k) but during installation I set it to "no internet connection available" so it shouldn't be looking for one, Zone Alarm hasn't mentioned any attempted access either.
The MP3Utility found 12 out of 1100 corrupt files, mostly ones I'd known to have clicks or pops in them, I'm removing them at the moment. I have to restart to put the swap file options into effect so I'll test the ML afterwards.
