...I got this computer about 1 year and a half ago with an 80 gig hd, and thought to myself "Hah. I'll NEVER be able to fill THAT up. Pff, I could barely fill a 15 gig hardrive. This is awsome. I'll have more space than I'll ever need."
Wrong. Damn, I have used up 60 gigs of space now, and I have no Idea on what. ...I dont have too many games installed, and I dont have THOUSANDs of mp3s... Where the hell did that extra 45 gigs of information come from!?
agh. I have never reformatted my Hd. It may be time :D.

Seriously, check the temporary internet files. I dunno how many times I've seen people with a few gigs of stuff there, because they let windows manage it automatically, and it essentially just keeps EVERYTHING you've ever done.
Other than that... check your uninstall list, and check your main programs - how much do you use? You'd be surprised how big some of todays programs are (ah, the days of 40 meg hard drives... when windows fit on 3 3.5" diskettes and dos on 1 5.25 diskette..)

I concur. I have 10 movies, 3000 mp3s, numerous games and programs, and I am only using 40% of my 80GB hd.

I have a program that deletes ALL history stuff, and logs/keys, ect. Yea, When I cleared it a long time ago (I just cleared it agian this week), it cleared 1 gig of stuff. I was pretty surprised. I do it now about once a month, and it only clears about 10 mb of stuff.
I did check my uninstall list. About once every couple of weeks. I only have things installed that I actively need/use.

However, I DO know where at least five of the gigs of mystery hd usage came from. I have a few movies on my computer, and I have the hl2 NOT demo (shh...) and the doom3 demo.
...Who said anything about a demo? Not me. Did you? No...

i collect my junk and put it on cd. then every year or so i go through them for stuff thats actually useful/worth keeping and find theres only about 100mb of good stuff out of 5 full cds.

I don't think I can count how many hard drives I have. I've got an 80 external, a 60 internal for my lappy, 2x40 for my main machine back home, and a whole stinkin' pile of 3's, 13's, (and even a 250mb I think) and other crap distributed around about 5 computers.
I think it's time I get rid of some computers. Stupid LAN...
That said, try 10 gigs (probly more, can't check right now) of movies, 20+ of LEGAL music (ah, the life of a DJ), a few of porn, some other random crapola... games, CD's waiting to be burned... pics... *sigh*

Right... get me a 100 pack of Memorex DVD-R's and my drives will be nice empty, except for my music. And except of course for the new anime that'd be downloaded to the new space.
And I save stuff so I don't have to take a week to download it again whenever I wan't to watch it a 2nd time.

i'm probably going to move up from a 2.1gig hard drive to a 40gig hard drive in the near future. i don't think i'll be able to fill that for a while as i'm on a 400mhz Dell.

Once you disable system restore Windows XP erases the previous restore points. Best thing to do is just turn it off click OK, and then go back in and turn it back on and create a new point. Now as for if it gives that space back to the HD is another question.
Also make sure that the indexing service is disabled.
Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services.

If you don't have the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, go to the Control Panel, switch to "Classic View" (if necessary), and open "System". This does the same thing.

Holy shit! My first computer with Windows was a 286 with a 20Meg drive. It was loaded with Desmit C, Turbo C, a VT100 emulator, and some word processor that I don't remember the name of. I still had room left!
Thanks for the memory!:D
