View Full Version : Can listeners tune in with Windows Media Player?

GodSquad

Hello there everyone!

OK...we've been up and broadcasting since April 19th thanks to the help of many in here...so again...THANK YOU!

I need help with something else though.

There are many people who are interested in tuning in, but don't have WinAmp. We have a link to the winamp.com site to download the latest version of WinAmp, but many potential listeners don't want to take the time to download, install, and then reboot.

I know that they can tune in using Quick Time and Real Player by pasting the server address into OPEN URL in their player, but can't seem to get Windows Media Player to work with our stream. Is there a reason for this and is there any way around it? And, if any of you what I need to change in my link(s) so that our listeners can click on the respective links for the media player (i.e. Qick Time, Real Player, WinAmp, Windows Media Player) that they have already on their computer.

Thanks again to everyone for being so helpful!

Go directly to the SHOUTcast Forums. Do not pass GO. Do not collect $200 (http://forums.winamp.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=140).

But I'll give you a hint....
Search the Forums (http://forums.winamp.com/search.php) and read all stickies.

Hi! I see you want to use Windows Media Player/Realplayer to broadcast your stream! Use the following codes:

To create a stream with WMP 7.1 and up, use the following:
<asx version="3.0">

TITLE

TITLE

<ref href="http://yourIP:yourPORT/"/>

</asx>

Change the code to fit your needs.
Note: This only works in WMP 7.1 and up
Note the trialing slash after "yourPORT"

To make a file into a RealPlayer stream, make a notepad file with the following:

http://yourIP:yourport/listen.pls

Then save that as yourfile.ram

Then, just upload these files to your webhost, and when they are accessed, the link will open in the appropriate player.

Hey!

I had already done a search of the forums before posting, but dind't find anything besides what protegechris posted. We're doing fine broadcasting with WinAmp, I just want our listeners to be able to tune in using other media players.

Do I have to change the link in any way for Quick Time or Real Player to launch and is it even possible to tune in using Windows Media Player?

protegechris

:igor:
The newest realone can handle the same link as the Winamp, however older one's have to use the file like I showed you.

Windows media may or may not work if you just take off the /listen.pls

Otherwise, I just told you how to do it.

leave off listen.pls

Hey everyone!

Thanks for all the help!

Pasting the link into Windows Media Player without the /listen.pls lets listeners tune in, but puting the link...

http://encounterwithgod.no-ip.com:8000/

doesn't launch Windows Media Player, it only takes you to the shoutcast statistics page on our stream.

Any ideas on how to get the link to launch each individual player. For example, clicking on the link for Quick Time would launch Quick Time, and clicking on the link for Media Player would launch Media Player, etc.

Any help on this would be very helpful! Thanks!

this is a good question. I've only been here a few hours but I learn fast. Seems like a simple question but yet nobody knows. That's cool, but it's funny how people try to impede your progress when you're searching for an answer and they don't know what it is. You'd think they would want to benefit by learning from the answer but all they want to do is stop you because they don't know themselves and maybe they are from madrid, or just mad.
I do know that just because you are broadcasting using winamp yourself it doesnt mean your listeners HAVE to have winamp themselves. You can use winamp to broadcast to people that don't have Winamp. IF you link your site as your http://ip/port/listen.pls it will cue whatever media program they have that recognizes the .pls format which stands for 'playlist'. I broadcast using winamp and when i link myself to my own stream it opens up realplayer due to whatever settings are set somewhere that I don't even know how to change but its just to prove that you can still shoutcast usuing winamp even if your listeners don't have winamp.
Like the listener person above me posted, linking your ip and port only brings the person to a page about statistics. As I understand, if you want people to hear your stream the link should be like this : http://yourip:port/listen.pls
where 'yourip' is your ip adress which you can get from 'http://www.whatismyip.com' and the port which i don't know what that means but '8000' seems to work for me and everyone else, and the 'listen.pls' part of it seems universal as well, where '.pls' calls up a program that reads teh '.pls' (playlist) format. If your listener gets an error they either don't have winamp or realplayer or a program that recognizes a '.pls' extention in which case the only recommendation is to get one of those players.
If you know a better solution and I'm all ears, I'm by no means a definitive source of information but I don't see anyone else saying anything of value.

I guess my point was, if you want your listeners to have windows media player to launch everytime you link your site, they would have to know how to adjust their settings for 'default whatever player' if it's not their default player and they don't know how to change it, there's nothing you can do unless you know what to tell them to change it, which, i don't know. I just know it works for me but launches realplayer. Just make sure they have realplayer, winamp AND windows media player al installed as the latest versions which might be alot of work to your listener but I don't know a simpler way and if there is I would benefit from reading.

Am I just being ignored?

First off I have had a few drinks tonight for afriends birthday but my point is what has this to do with Winamp.

You are asking on the winamp forums how to play a peice of music on rival media player when it works fine on winamp. (Please corretc me if I am wrong with this) I read the WMp forums too as I want to help all but surely here is the wrong place for this question. The correct palce is that media palyer support forums and I bet you anything they have less support then here.

protegechris...

sorry that I didn't try that earlier, I understood it as instructions for how to broadcast using Media Player, not how to tune in using Media Player. Sorry that I was confused. :p

Anyhow, I guess I still don't completely understand what I need to do with the instructions you gave.

What do I change Title, author, etc. to and what do I do with the code exactly? Sorry to seem stupid or ignorant.

protegechris
19th June 2004, 20:52
All you need to do is replace the ip:port with your address and such, and Where it says title and author just put like your station, and as author your slogan, or whatever you want to appear when they arestreaming with WMP.

Then upload the files to your webhost, and access them, and the players should open.

GodSquad
20th June 2004, 08:49
OK...I got the whole customization thing, but where do I put the code exactly?

I tried pasting it into the web page as HTML code, but only got the words the I replaced Title and Author with to appear, but no link.

What do I do next?

And...is it possible to add this link that will launch Windows Media Player, Real Player, etc. to images? I would imagine it is, but how would I go about it?

Sorry if this is pretty basic, but I'm still learning and everyone's help has truly been indispensable!

mightbeyour
20th June 2004, 10:02
The code goes into a seperate file that you would name something like listen.asx, it must have the asx extension.

Then embed listen.asx into your page with the a href tag.

GodSquad
20th June 2004, 16:33
what's an href tag? how do I put that into the HTML code of my web (if that's indeed what I need to do)?

Thanks again for everyone's help!

protegechris
20th June 2004, 18:33
No, you upload the .asx file, and make a link on your webpage that links to the .asx file. When clicked, windows media player should open.

Look at howI do it on my site:
http://www.unsigned-online.com

The windows media player link links to the .asx file.

GodSquad
20th June 2004, 21:16
OK...thanks for getting me this far...but I need one last bit of help...

I've been able to link the .asx file to my site...but when I click on the link...WMP opens with an error message saying...WMP cannot play the file because the associated playlist is not valid.

Don't know if maybe I formatted to code wrong...

First I tried formatting it like this...

<asx version='3.0'>

God Squad Radio

God Squad Radio

<ref href='http://encounterwithgod.no-ip.com:8000/'/>

</asx>

then I tried leaving it like this...

<asx version='3.0'>

Title

Title

<ref href='http://encounterwithgod.no-ip.com:8000/'/>

</asx>

both gave the same error. It's probably something easy to fix, any ideas?

GodSquad
21st June 2004, 06:51
before actually publishing the site...I decided to test it out in Preview mode (I use Front Page) and when I click on the link, I get Media Player to launch, but I get the error message saying that the associated playlist is not valid. Any ideas?

protegechris
21st June 2004, 07:02
:-/ try it on your webhost please.

GodSquad
21st June 2004, 17:31
OK...on the web host I get page cannot be found and Media Player doesn't even launch. :(

What I did exactly...

I Created the Note Pad .asx file with the following code...
<asx version='3.0'>

God Squad Radio

God Squad Radio

WMP

</asx>

Then I created a link to the .asx file in my web.

Then I uploaded the changes to my web and tried to click on the link and got the error.

Anyone have any idea where I went wrong?

DJCassio
21st June 2004, 17:59
your error is probably in the way you saved the file from word pad. Wordpad does use some control characters in formating and is not a true text editor. Try re-saving it using quotes around the file name with the the .asx extension and select txt as file type. e.g. "listen.asx" be sure to use the quotes around the filename.

GodSquad
21st June 2004, 18:27
OK...I guess I'm not understanding this correctly...

I've tried everything suggested (inluding putting quotes around the file name) and nothing is working.

When I click on the link on the web page, it looks like it's trying to get to the file that's on my hard drive, but how can it access something that's on my hard drive. Don't I have to put with Note Pad file into my web in some other way than just linking something to the file on my hard drive?

DJCassio
21st June 2004, 19:08
ok I think I see the trouble with your asx file, you have html tags in there and shouldn't here is a copy of mine that works.

Hey...thanks to everyone for your help! I got the link for Media Player to work!!! :D

Now...on to the next problem...getting the links to launch Real Player and Quick Time.

I tried using the steps protege Chris gave for Real player, but got an error message saying that the meta file contained invalid syntax.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how to get the link for Real Player and Quick Time to work?

I'm especially interested in getting the Quick Time link to work for those Mac users out there!

Thanks again for all the help! :)

ok...tried placing that code into a new page on my web and linking to it, but it didn't load Quick Time when I tested it, only loaded a blank white page.

Still haven't been able to get Real Player link working either. I'm still getting the invalid syntax error.

Anyone have any ideas on what to try next?

The newest version of realplayer can handle the link used for winamp.

Can you take a screen shot of what happens when you click on the realplayer link?

re quicktime, i just implemented this code on my site and it works fine.
Chose the page you wish users to view whilst listening to your station and paste mightbeyours' code into the body of the html.
This in my case did not actually launch the Quicktime interface but as long as my stream is up it pipes it to the page.
Mightbeyour, thank you so much for posting the code it has saved me starting a new thread. :):up:

Now I just really need to get this Real Player code working.

Thanks to you all for all of your help on this! You have no idea how much it is appreciated! :)

And is there a way to get the Quick Time player to launch similarly to WinAmp and Windows Media Player?

I don't know why the real player code isn't working still. If any of you can offer any helpful advice on this, it would be GREATLY appreciated!

I'm also wondering how to be able to launch the Quick Time player rather than just have it launch within an actual page.

If anyone can offer any help, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

i can unsterstand how annoyed you guys must feel about this, the only other option i could suggest is that you embed the players in a pop up page so for example when you create links for each player it would then open it up in a small pop up window. cos i have noticed that some servers like ntl/freewebs create problems when you try to do direct links with asx & ram files

Is it possible to create a .mov or .qt file so that a shoutcast stream can specifically play in quicktime player without having to embed it into a webpage or enter the stream address directly into the quicktime player/ even though quicktime can accept .pls if its set up to be the priority player.

If so how please ?
