View Full Version : i, Robot and The Matrix?

Just saw the trailer and well, is it meant to be the same as how the matrix war started, with B166ER? Hell, the trailer even had the same music as The Matrix Revolutions. Too much of a coincidence.

Oh it's a book? Well that changes everything I guess. But wasnt that music composed for The Matrix?

i,robot was written by the great Issac Asimov many years ago, the matrix ripped off plenty of ideas from it, and from what I've read of this film version they basically took one plot point from the book along with the title and junked the rest of it to tell a will smith friendly special effects bonaza.
The fact that the writing credits on the movie list Asimov's writing credit as 'suggested by book', should speak volumes.
Do yourself a favour, spend any money you might have spent on a ticket for this film, and go buy the book version you will enjoy it a thousand times more than the film.

From what I've seen of the movie trailer, it has little if anything to do with the book.
Robots, from what I recall don't go bezerk in the book.

The trailor to "I, Robot" looks stupid anyway...
Mr Jones
19th June 2004, 22:42
Asimov has never had anything like a decent movie made of his books, the previous attempt to I,Robot was the absolutely repellent Bicentenial Man (gouge eyes out with rusty spork here)
ElChevelle
19th June 2004, 22:46
The man wrote thinking books which is nothing Hollywood likes to use in their scripts.
Bisexual Man wasn't that bad, if you can stand watching Robin Williams for 2 hours.

I'd rather insert a pineapple into my rectum sideways than watch 2 hours of Rob the knob.....

The Idea sounds awsome, and based on your reccomendation, I might buy the book just for the read. I'm into stuff like that. However, It looks like they totally fucked up the movie. They threw in will smith, and a bunch of horrible, Crappily scripted action. I hate movies like that, and unfortunately for me, this type of garbage makes up 70% of all new movies.

McDonald's is still making commercials? (I haven't watched TV in months). All I do is watch movies now, at the theater and on DVD.
I might pick up that book, it looks pretty good.
I'm not that big of a fan of Will Smith, mainly because of Men in Black. Although, his films are getting better and better funded. The effects in this "I, Robot" are looking good.

The movie has nothing to do with the books I think. It was written as just a robot movie but they decided to hook it with I, Robot to make it more marketable. Then they rewrote it to add stuff in from the books.
I have not read I, Robot yet. I have read other Asimov books and they are great though! The Foundation Trilogy was kick ass!
If you want to see a better trailer check out the japanese one! Its a lot better then the american trailer!

I dont like the effect for this movie though. The robots look so damn fake!
Oh, about the trailer music. Trailers almost always use music from other places.

Fake compared to what?, the robot that comes around and cleans your house or the robot that comes around and clips your toenail?
Are you saying that a fictional robot in a fictional film based in a fictional future somehow dosn't look somehow like a real walking, talking, singing and dancing robot that already exists?
Where can I get one of these wonder machines:confused:

The storyline of the movie is fake...I don't see you complaining about that! :p

I dont mean the design. The design is great! I'm saying the special effects. They dont look realistic. Its like a video, with some CG mixed in. Get what I am saying? Its not like in LotR where Gollum and stuff look very nice and real. You can believe he is a character. From the trailers it looks like they did a bad job of that in this movie. I wasnt saying the design is fake, course its fake, its a scifi movie. I'm saying the CGI work on them is bad.

It's a movie with robots going berserk and killing people. What the fuck is there not to like. Don't really care if it's based on a book or not.
It has robots.
it has guns.
It has fast cars.
it has explosions.
It has action.
It doesn't require me to think, so I can sit back and enjoy the ride. Much like riding in a car with a friend. You're free to look at the scenery, ohh and ahh, and not pay attention to the road.
I. Am. There.
Besides, I like Will Smith (and Robin Williams, for that matter).

I've only seen short trailers and don't have high hopes for the film but might watch it when it's on DVD. I might find the book and read that instead, if I've read it before then it's been a long time.

This thread is so synical. Someone one asked if anyone else felt their was an uncanny resemblance between i.Robot and The Matrix and others comment on how society will flail because stupid people exist. Stupid people have always exist.
Regardless of that, I welcome this movie because I am a Will Smith fan and I like action movies. I enjoyed bicentanial man. I enjoyed the matrix. I enjoyed Terminator. I will probably enjoy this man vs machine brawler also. Please don't bash the movie before it comes out. Never judge a book by its cover.

Did you guys know that Will Smith was offered the part of "Neo" in the Matrix, but turned it down to do "Wild Wild West". Will Smith doing I,Robot makes sense now. I'll still go see the movie. I love movies.

I don't think Will would have made a good Neo.

I agree that some action films shouldn't be judged based on classic-book standards. However, if you're going to make an action movie, don't base it on a philosophical book! Honestly, this movie would have been better if it hadn't tried to lamely tie in some kind of literary class. We don't watch action films for social commentary, or read philosophical novels to see cars blow up and hear trademark phrases from celebrities.
((Off topic: The LOTR movies were great, but completely failed to translate the indescribable long-ago-legend aura that Tolkein wrote the books to create. Reading that series once again after seeing the movies, I'm aware of a deep melancholy that pervades the series, cushioned by a kind of warm comfort that seems to radiate from the likes of Tom Bombadil, Gandalf (grey, not white) and the unconscionably old yet quite youthful Elvish folk. If you actually read more than just these books, like the Silmarillion or whatever else, you come to realize that in that universe, all the great and terribly powerful or virtuous entities have long since passed from Middle-Earth, and out of the stories.
Battlefield Earth sucked compared to the book.
Digital life will one day kill us all.))

I made up a conspiracy theory with my boyfriend that the movie was most likely sponsored by Microsoft - the title I,Robot is just perfect for it since it resembles products like iPOD, iMac etc...and just look at the robots, they sure look like something Apple would come up with:
Robot (http://www.affichescinema.com/insc_i/i_robot.jpg)
Mac (http://www.atpm.com/6.08/macworld-gallery/images/macs-imac-snow.jpg)
And the robots go beserk in the movie, it's suggesting the audience that macintosh computers are not reliable!
Where is windude when you need him? :p

Smoking weed while listening to some trippy sci-fi movie theme song on your iPod is bad for you, Mia... :p
Well, it's not all that bad...Just don't watch the i, Robot trailors while doing so anymore... :D
OMG! Just like with the iPod, they use a lower-case "i" in the movie title...
Maybe Mia is onto something here... :p

Yeah, and it's if you weigh less than a duck, you don't get killed for being a witch.
So, muahaha *whips out matches*
I dunno, it looks like just another run-of-the-mill action flick with a premise buried deep inside it that's never really explored, but only touched upon throughout the film.
Bicentennial Man sucked, I thought it was stupid.
Mrs_Mia_Wallace

Wrong, you need to weigh the same as a duck to be classified as a witch:
Bedevere: Quiet, quiet, quiet, QUIETA There are ways of *telling* whether she
is a witch!
Villagers: Are there? What? Tell us, then! Tell us!
Bedevere: Tell me. What do you do with witches?
V: BUUUURN!!!!! BUUUUUURRRRNN!!!!! You BURN them!!!! BURN!!
Bedevere: And what do you burn apart from witches?
Villager: More Witches!
Other Villager: Wood.
Bedevere: So. Why do witches burn?
(long silence)
(shuffling of feet by the villagers)
Villager: (tentatively) Because they're made of.....wood?
Bedevere: Goooood!
Other Villagers: oh yeah... oh....
Bedevere: So. How do we tell whether she is made of wood?
One Villager: Build a bridge out of 'er!
Bedevere: Aah. But can you not also make bridges out of stone?
Villagers: oh yeah. oh. umm...
Bedevere: Does wood sink in water?
One Villager: No! No, no, it floats!
Other Villager: Throw her into the pond!
Villagers: yaaaaaa!
(when order is restored)
Bedevere: What also floats in water?
Villager: Bread!
Another Villager: Apples!
Another Villager: Uh...very small rocks!
Another Villager: Cider!
Another Villager: Uh...great gravy!
Another Villager: Cherries!
Another Villager: Mud!
Another Villager: Churches! Churches!
Another Villager: Lead! Lead!
King Arthur: A Duck!
Villagers: (in amazement) ooooooh!
Bedevere: exACTly!
Bedevere: (to a villager) So, *logically*...
Villager: (very slowly, with pauses between each word)
If...she...weighs the same as a duck......she's made of wood.
Bedevere: and therefore...
(pause)
Villager: A Witch!
All Villagers: A WITCH!
So if you would weigh more than a duck you wouldn't be made out of wood and not classified as a witch ^_^
