I have a question:

Is it illegal to download episodes of say, futurama, even though FOX used to show them, and one doesnt have to pay for basic television? If so, why?

Ask yourself this...

Q. How did it get on the net in the first place?
A. Someone encoded and copied it.

My money would be on Fox's copyright on the show prevents anyone from copying and re-distributing in any medium, be it for profit or not.

Even if the person offering it for download is making no profit, it's still a sale that fox have lost of say a DVD copy of it, remeber they want you to go buy their products, not scam it off the net for free.

It's all about copyright laws, which always work in favour of the original copyright owner and not the person who has the product.

I allow people to look at me in public for free.
I don't allow people to use my image on the internet, no matter what the reason.

The original airings of Futurama contained commercials which, for the most part, paid for it's production. P2P and torrents do not. Regardless, you don't own it which means it doesn't belong to you meaning you stole it making you a thief meaning Fox has the right to pursue legal actions which means you need a lawyer which means you are scum for providing a living to a lawyer since they are crooks meaning........so on and so on.

Didn't you ask this nearly identical question not long ago?:weird:

Buy the boxsets. They are infinitly cooler than a hard drive full of copies.

Then how can tVo and Movie recording be legal?

Recording with VHS tapes is legal. Using a casette to record off the radio is legal. What's not legal is distributing multiple copies to the public without the copywrite owner's permission/consent.

Seriously, get a summer job, earn a few bucks, and get the Futurama DVD sets. The quality is so much better than crappy download quality.

Unless, of course, you download DVD rips of the episodes. Never underestimate the power of a good encoder who knows how to use the XviD codec with proper filters.

It's legal to record them but I don't think it is legal to keep them over a certain amount of time, i.e. the recording is to watch soon then get rid of not an archive to watch for years.

Yea, fuck it, I'll just buy a box set, or ask for it for my birthday or something.

My birthday is in about 20 days.
