And to answer the question... Metroid Prime, followed closely by Ocarina Of Time.

Depends on what criteria you want to base the 'best game' argument on.
From my point of view, remember that's all it is.....
Longevity, now if a best game were based on longevity, then I might have to say Lords of Midnight and it's sequel Doomdarks Revenge, what are they you all cry? a couple of turn based stratergy/war games from around 1984, I played them to death on my old 8bit home comp, I then played them on the amiga and stuff when people started writing their own versions of them, then on the pc and now some guy has written a great conversion of both of them for the GBA, so I can carry them in my pocket and start up the war of the solstice whenever I like, so 20+ years of gameplay is not bad...
Now if you wanted playability, a game that you can pick up anytime of day and get straight into it , then I'd say Doom, everyone knows how to play it, it's on just about every format out there, it's easy to play , great stuff.
If you were talking about out and out solid gameplay that keeps you hooked, then I'd go with GTA Vice City, I don't think I've ever played a game as much so often, kept me occupied for months, and during that time not a single other game made it to my console, just the sheer open ended nature of it made it a joy to play, some days I'd knock out a few missons, others I'd just drive around doing mad stunts, others I'd spend looking for packages etc etc etc. Solid..
For Happy Wow Great Amazing memories, I'd say FFVII, a revalation in gameplaying at the time, stunning visuals combined with gripping plot, a game where I just wanted to see, do, collect, meet everything and everyone , I was quite sad when it ended.
So much to choose from it's hard to pick an all time fave.

Best "Flawed" game ever.
Mafia
Made the GTA series look like a joke, but it lacked GTA's Freedom. You could do a mission, and then do things, but you could not just go out and do nothing, You could not just drive around for the fun of it. You had to do missions.
It did have Free-ride, but that had its own flaws. You could not go into buildings (ok APPART from Yellow Petes) and walk around. Plus nothing realy happened in it, you just drove around.

In what way?
1. interaction with other friendly characters,
2.emphasis on storytelling,
3.the completely mod-able concept,
4.finding a reason for your on screen displays (your suit)
5.Not randomly finding things on the ground (items are purposly placed)
6. the grunt's team tactics
7. the mixing of puzzles and shooting
so on and so forth....
How sad it is that we dont remember things so little ago!

Nope, I've never played the thing, I was just asking for some clarification on your broad statement.
You can't make such a all encompasing statment to the world without having a point of view to back it up.
If you think something is the best/the suck, then say why.
Sorry if you think you were being set up to be trolled, nice to know that's what people think.

that game hardly any story whatsoever. i don't know what pc fps storyline standards were back then, but they must of had zero story for HL to be considered revolutionary.

Maybe it wasn't so good at storyline but what was really cool(HL was aclaimed for this) was the beginning. It really submerged you into the game while riding on the cart thing. All the small details and the works of the plant, etc.

I'd agree, if you define storytelling as cut-scenes, but play a pre halfLife FPS and see how it contrasts. They were basically like:1. run 2.kill stuff.
something important I didn't mention before was the HV suit training. That was new.
xenosomething
6th October 2004, 23:50
but still, storytelling was an unremarkable aspect of HL...not even worth mentioning really.
and the only reason i even said anything was because you put that particular one in bold letters.:p
shakey_snake
7th October 2004, 06:01
I put it in bold for the very same reason you are having such a struggle with understanding what I'm getting at:
Before half-life the plot-line either wasn't important to videogame makers (go rescue someone captured by an enemy) or not integated into the gameplay (think Doom 1: here's a shotgun, have at it!).
But now it's something you expect from a game. as you've already claimed: i don't know what pc fps storyline standards were back then
Revolutionary (my original claim) doesn't have to be the best ever, it just has to be influencial and original. Thus is half-life's story telling.
life tip: I understand you're most likely young, but do your best to free yourself from the time and place in which you live when trying to be objective.

As with some of the people here, I'd have to say that depends on what standard you're using to judge by.
Best game in terms of when it originally came out?
Super Mario World
In comparison to games of any time period?
GTA - Vice City
Most gameplay time?
Alpha Centauri
Most original?
Black & White
Most engrossing?
Morrowind III
There are more than a couple of games that were incredibly entertaining at the time I was playing them - Earthsiege & Earthsiege 2 come to mind.

Statistically, here's how the top selling games of all time have done.
1) Super Mario Bros. (NES) - 40 Million
2) Tetris (Game Boy) - 33 Million
3) Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) 18 Million
4) Super Mario World (SNES) - 17 Million
5) Super Mario Land (Game Boy) - 14 Million
6) Super Mario 64 (N64) - 11 Million
7) The Sims (PC) - 10 Million
8) Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) - 10 Million
9) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2) - 8.5 Million
10) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (PS1) - 8 Million
11) GoldenEye (N64) - 8 Million
12) Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - 8 Million
13) Super Mario Kart (SNES) - 8 Million
14) Pokemon Red/Blue (Game Boy) - 8 Million
15) Half-Life (PC) - 8 Million
16) Tomb Raider II (PS1) - 8 Million
17) Final Fantasy VII (PS1) - 7.8 Million
18) Myst (PC) - 7 Million
19) Gran Turismo 3 (PS2) - 7 Million
20) Dragon Warrior VII (PS1) - 6 Million
Ultimately, Super Mario Brothers for the Nintendo Entertainment System literally did the best. Mario is one of the most well known characters in the world as well. You could go to the center of the Earth and ask the Vril-Ya who Mario is, and they'd probably know.
I'd have to say Final Fantasy 7, personally.

Definitely a great storyline, good characters, nice graphics, and amazing music. AMAZING music. I have this great mix of orchestrated Chrono Trigger music. The audio just makes the game so much more enjoyable.
And Metal Gear Solid is a definite second for me. I just like it a lot. Sons of Liberty wasn't too bad either, though I didn't own that one (played it at my cousin's house).
