I've noticed that when I'm listening to a song using Winamp while browsing these forums, the song will randomly skip - just for a fraction of a second. This seems to be memory related.

I would not have thought that remote forums would use much memory on my PC.

Total :weird:ness.

i actually don't have that problem on my computer and i'm using firefox. and my computer's about 6 years old.

Doesn't seem to be a problem with Internet Explorer (so far).

i just remembered that winamp would skip a little bit when i started firefox. i fixed it by manually setting the virtual memory. that was before i got my 80gb HD(ATA 100). now it doesn't skip at all.

i set it to 192mb. i have 128mb of physical RAM. stuff also sped up a bit too.

if your computer is old your browser could be taking up all the bandwidth of your bus causing winamp to get starved for attention. increase the processor priority or the buffers and see if that helps. if it doesn then like get a new bus? i dunno.

Not sure exactly which spec you need, so here goes it:

Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz Processor
Physical RAM: 256MB
Current Windows XP Swapfile Size: 1 92MB ( manually set)

you dont really need to set your swap file manually with xp. i dont know if it would offer any benefits. if you had a shit load of ram you could make a ram disk that loads on start up of say 1gb or 700mb and set your temporary files dir and swap file directory to that. thats something i hope to do someday. still i dont know if setting a fixed value for the swap file does anything for xp or not.

sometimes if the swapfile gets too big the system will slow down to a crawl. that happened to me once when i was letting windows manage the swapfile(took 300mb). 192mb seems to be optimal for most newer systems.

I have no idea what to keep my swap file at. I have 320mb of pc100 ram running at 66mhz. I have windows on a slow 5400 (i think...) 6gb hard drive with a i dunno chache size and ample free space. I have a 300 mhz PII. Right now my swap is at 160mb so says rainmeter.

i don't think windows would need much more than 200mb of RAM overall. earlier my system was using 180+mb of RAM (i had a lot of stuff open) and i only have 128mb of PC100. i set the swapfile to 192mb so it would run a bit more quickly, so windows doesn't have to resize it all the time. slows the system down when windows resizes the swapfile.

Increase the buffer in winamp.
Prefs > Output > Directsound > Buffer

Increase Buffer and prebuffer.

in my experience that doesn't work that great. i don't know about it taking more RAM but i know it takes longer for songs to begin playback. manually setting the swapfile worked for me.

I increased my buffers to the max. I also enabled the CPU control, but doesn't seem to help or hurt.

Might be part of that W32/Funner.worm virus floating about. I hear lots of people having troubles with msn messenger cause of it

is it on my computer or is the msn messenger server infected with that? messenger was working fine untill they did some maintainence the other night, then this started happening. i'll probably do a scan just to be safe.

I was told the worm drops several copies of itself into the Windows and Windows system folder, and adds itself to the startup in the reg. And then it's suppose to propagate by sending itself to all the members of a user's MSN Messanger contact list.
