US Sees Growth In CD Sales Market
Last Updated: Thursday, 6 January, 2005, 09:56 GMT
The CD format still accounts for 98% of the 666 million albums sold, according to research company Nielsen Soundscan.

A total of 140 million digital tracks were legally downloaded last year, equivalent to 14 million albums.

R&B star Usher was the biggest-selling artist with his album Confessions selling eight million copies alone.

Other top sellers of the year were Norah Jones, Eminem and country stars Kenny Chesney and Gretchen Wilson.

The US recording industry has attempted to tackle music piracy by suing those it believes are the worst offenders and closing down websites which offer music without permission.

Although it was slow to react to the problem the launch of services such as iTunes and the relaunched Napster has persuaded many to use the legal sites.

The end of the year saw downloads reach a weekly high of 6.7 million tracks, up from 300,000 in mid-2003.

The use of download websites means consumers do not have to purchase entire albums but can chose only the tracks they like.

Dowloands of whole albums has been calculated at 5.5 million copies, with rock band Hoobastank one of the most popular choices.

Nielsen Soundscan said the fastest growing music genres were Latin and country.

The UK recorded a record year for album sales in 2004, with 237 million sold in the 12 months up to September, an increase of 3%.

The Scissor Sisters proved the most popular album of the year, followed by Keane and Maroon 5.

TOP FIVE US ALBUMS

So much for the RIAA's lies. Once again it's been proven false.

I do have to wonder about the number 666 though. We knoew there was evil behind the music empires but I'VE SEEN THE SIGN.

Music piracy is also at an all-time high as well.

But why would anyone be bothered?
It helps the music companies.

i think the RIAA wants you to spend money on crap albums. you buy them thinking they'll be good and they end up very very crappy. P2P software is like a "try before you buy" kind of thing. only i can't do the buy part very often.:p

if they have 'defeated' piracy.. does that mean they will stop suing? ;)

Yeah even if they closed down P2P i wouldn't buy most music. I wouldn't buy it normally so me getting it gratis isn't to big a deal. Lets see the last album I bought was Avril Lavign... ...

don't say anything:weird:

Most (if not all) of my entertainment budget goes to video games, and accessories to my beloved XBoX.

I don't buy CDs anyways, no place sells the CDs or the records in some cases for the songs I want at anywere even close to a reasonable price, and then you can get into the songs that you can't even buy on any format...

I buy CDs because I want to pay for music, and there's no good online service with a good choice and without DRM. Even though I just rip the CDs to my PC.

Amazon.com kicks ass. I got a Shihad CD for half a buck, course I did pay shipping but still, a CD for 3-7 bucks? There's plenty of good stuff if you don't mind buying used/radio promo stuff. I download quite a bit more than I buy but I make a point of buying the /good/ stuff.

Original Sound Track.

Music that wasn't written for the film/game, but is in it. As opposed to the "score" which is any atmospheric/soundtrack written for the film/game, I think.

How is it that the most popular albums of the year are not in the top 5 sellers?
