I've seen some sites have moved from using the "old" streaming methods for Winamp and started using streaming in AAC. I haven't seen any new versions of SHOUTcast so what streaming program is allowing it for ACC+?

Just curious, I've listened from this AAC format, and it sounds great even with a low bitrate.:)

The streaming method hasn't changed, all that has changed is the codec. Currently what is widely used is MP3, AAC is from the same maker as mp3.

At any rate if you want to stream in AAC check out oddcast at www.oddsock.org

AAC+ costs a bundle is only currently be supplied by one vendor. Orban's Opticodec.

The server works the same either way. You cannot list on shoutcast's YP using AAC either.

So the streams at Digitally Imported or SomaFM use AAC+?

Where do I find more info for AAC+? Google came up with crap results.

Thank you. WOW... pricey, and complicated licensing for it too.

Still, quite amazed at the codec, has very clear sound.

What about the AAC with Oddsock? Is that codec good?

Does not sound as good as the opticodec on low bandwith streams

Oddsocks AAC is OK at about 80 Kbps lower is not advisable.

AAC is not nearly as good as aacPlus or OGG. xiradio as far as I am concerned price and quality are two totally different subjects. Just because something is open source or free doesn't neccessarily make it superior.

not forgetting that just because something is open source doesnt mean you definately wont have to pay a license either.

Assuming there is an open source streaming solution for he-aac(aac+/aacplus) out there (faad based prehaps?), you'll still need to pay up for the patents (think winamp+lame encoding). YMMV.

Ogg beats aacPlus on price? Not if you look at total cost.

Opticodec PC LE from Orban costs $99.

aacPlus decode is built into Winamp.

Most folks find that the aacPlus encoder pays for itself pretty quickly in saved bandwidth bills.

Hows that for "free?"

Guess my vote goes for accPlus too.

I've been meaning to get the orban encoder from the vendor here in the UK - last time I contacted them they didnt have it in stock :rolleyes:
